Bought my 2017 TRD pro new. No engine mods. Added airbags for pulling power. Saw a thread on here from 2020 about a guy losing oil and toyota doing an oil consumption test. Signed up for forum and lost the thread. I'm at 67k miles. Oil gets changed every 5k. Just checked the oil before a 700mile trip and we're 2 qts low. No evidence of leak. Not the first time. The other time, we attributed it oil cap and bought new. Anyone else have this problem??

2 quarts low in how long? If its not leaking then it's burning. Could be piston rings. You get any exhaust smoke? How's your spark plugs look? How often do you change oil, time wise? Do you do alot of short trips?

2 quartz low in less than a few thousand miles. Oil gets changed every 5k. Truck doesnt smoke. Truck goes long and short trips. I drove it 2000k miles in 36 hrs and no change in oil level. It's sporadic. I checked it because I was going far and it was low. Truck only has about 60k on it. Have never changed the plugs.

How long does it take you to go 5k miles? How are you checking for leaks? If it's oil stains on the ground, then check your cam towers for leaks against the block

Wipe your finger around the inside of your tail pipe after you’ve gotten the truck to operating temp for at least 20 minutes… depending on how much oil is burning you might just pull out a wet finger…

In my previous vehicle (subaru) it burned a quart every 1000 miles by the time I traded it in with 60,000 miles. Ever since that vehicle I vowed to never use 0w20 in anything ever again. Been using 5w30 or higher in my Tundra since new. 0w20 has caused oil consumption in many engines and once it starts it will only get worse.

Did you go to a thicker oil or stay with 0w20 on the Subaru?

Reason I’m asking is my truck just burned/consumed 1.5 qts over 5000 miles on 0w20. I just switched to 5w30 and am hopeful the consumption stops.

Using 0w20 in two vehicles including the Tundra - combined 80K miles. Zero consumption and I check oil in both vehicles once a week.

300 hectares on single tank of kerosene
    :rimshot:

This could do it. I assume newer vehicles use the same concept for crank case ventilation?

X3 on changing out that PCV valve. It definitely can’t hurt but that is quite a bit of oil consumption.

Are you sure it was filled and checked under identical conditions, such as maybe the slope of the parking area, the new filter was filled both times, the stick was properly seated, etc. I use a pcv catch can on mine and I can tell you it's surprising to see how much ends up going out the tailpipe on a truck not equipped. If you install a JLT catch can it will help you narrow down the issue and improve combustion, etc. Sort of depends on how long you intend to keep the truck to determine the value of the system. Good luck! When you get it figured out, post up for the next person.
