Stainless Steel Door Guards

Anyone familiar with these? I've found multiple dealers adding these to Tundras. It's only $150 add on, but I'm more concerned with the aesthetic.

Description says:
Thermoplastic-coated stainless steel is precisely matched to the exterior finish.
Compression-fitted to door edge contours
Blend seamlessly to complement exterior styling

If all that's true, they should barely be noticeable? Just curious if anyone has seen them in person?

I have them and would want them on any new Toyota I would buy. Here is a quick picture.

 

meh in 20+ years i have never needed those. what is the purpose of them except for peace of mind for the lazy? in ND with 15-25 mph winds daily, you learn to hold your door opening/closing them otherwise the wind will catch it and bend the door if not careful.

 

They come from the factory with them.

they dont come with the truck from the factory with them installed as standard. its and added cost.

did you buy yours in SET region? cause i know toyota usa regions its not a standard option. ask anyone not in SET/GST if they got door edge guards as standard

 

then that means you paid for it. it wasnt free (standard option)

 

saying every vehicle has it (standard) is not the same as paying for it.

 

Oh they charge for them. I think they were 165.They really pushed them in 2019, it seemed like most of trucks had them at the dealership. My daughters Tundra also came with then. I’m in the northeast. Never said it was standard. I said it came from the factory with them.

 

My concern with those is the installation method. My wife's Forester had them factory installed, the instructions say to use a mallet to hammer them over the door edge. I can only imagine how much paint is lost in the process and what kind of future corrosion could happen. Not to mention, issues with stainless steel interacting with aluminum.

 

which implies they are standard, which they are not. they are a PIO (port installed option) / DIO (dealer installed option). pio/dio options means that not every vehicle will come with them.

i am guessing your region is making them mandatory, i know alot of other regions they dont add that as a PIO or DIO. kansas region 90-95% of the trucks i see do not have this PIO.

each regional port has different mandatory requirements, so what may apply to your region may not apply to other regions. hence making the distinction. it will confuse people that are not in the know how FIO, PIO, DIO features work in different regions and what is considered standard and not.

 

These were listed on the window sticker and cost extra.

Yeah, I don't see the need but maybe others do. Over 20 years of driving and I have never once hit something with my door on edge. It doesn't stop door dings from others which as most could probably attest happens quite frequently. My doors are all PPFd.

 

can confirm that you do need to hammer them on. I bought a set and theyre hard plastic...dont think they scratch off the paint but theyve got to do some sort of damage if it takes a a rubber mallet to get them on. I live in Southern California, so corrosion is non-issue here.

 

I pulled them off my truck almost immediately. I did not care for the aesthetic look And I never park near any other cars. Pretty sure the dealer charged me $150 for them. But had no choice, since they were on the truck already. After a week of ownership this winter here in Minnesota salt and sand was already evident behind them. Just another place for salt to get stuck. I was a little worried that they were biting into the paint, since they were on there pretty tight, but there was no damage to the paint.

 

I have them as well. That’s how non intrusive they are.

 

I have always tried to be careful but things happen. The wind blows, a passenger slips
Up. If you have kids you can tell them to do or not do something a million times, like be careful opening the doors, and they'll still slip up. The paint on those edges is weak and on some cars I've seen them chip making contact with something without much force at all. My partly disabled Dad when he was alive had to he watched like a hawk getting out of vehicles, otherwise he'd hit something with the door. You could tell him to wait but if you weren't fast enough he'd be swinging the thing Open before you could get there.

These are cheap insurance and I've had L style 3m tape attached versions on my last several cars that go on gently and easily, don't come loose and saved me many times. I learned fast the cheap autoparts store glue on stuff is good for 2 really hot summers Max before you have a sticky mess with people getting glue on their fingers when touching the door edge. Never trusted the ones that clamp mechanically or get tapped on.

The other day my kid who knows how I am and always tries to remember to Be Careful opened my truck door into the mirror of my other vehicle. Neither got paint damage because of the door edge trim.

If you've managed a perfect track record your entire life more power to you but at 30 bucks to Cover all four doors I consider it cheap insurance.

 

its become 2nd nature to always hold onto to the door in ND. the only days the wind doesnt blow 15+ mph is the days you remember.

snow and rain blow sideways here all the time.
