Anyone making a point to see this amazing event? I'm having to drive 10 hours to see it and pray that the weather will cooperate.

I live ten miles from the centerline. We are expecting 100,000+ so I'd avoid Jackson Hole.

People here in Oregon are freaking out about it. Farmers in Central Oregon, right under the path of the eclipse, are renting out parcels of their land for $1000 for a minimum of 3 nights. They're planning an additional 500,000 people in the capital of Salem, and the central Oregon coast is planning on a state of emergency for a couple of days. Traffic, which already sucks in the Portland metro area, is going to be crazy. They're saying that the drive from Portland to Salem, which is normally 40ish minutes, is going to take 9 hours because of the additional people here, and because people are going to be stupid and just stop on the roads and freeways and watch. I already told the guys that work for me that our warehouse and shop is going to be closed that day, so they don't have to be on the roads with everybody. Having said that, I'll be in the backyard with my girls with our special eclipse glasses to see it. Should be an interesting 5 minutes (or however long it's supposed to last). They're actually starting to forecast rain and clouds for that day across the state though, I think that would be kind of funny for people that traveled long distances just to get screwed out of seeing anything because of the cloud cover.

You know those of you in Texas need only wait until April 8th, 2024 and the next total solar eclipse will pass through your state. It will be traveling southwest to the northeast through Kentucky, Ohio and New York as well.

The next one that passes through the west coast won't be until August 12th, 2045. Those in the Bay Area will need only travel 2 hours to Reno to take it in and those in Colorado, Mississippi and Florida will see it pass through their state.

Not driving anywhere, but I am going to get to see an 84% obscuration, in person. At 18:05 UTC in OKC it will be the max eclipse we get here. I am not driving to St. Louis, I will just watch the 1.08 magnitude on the internet.

    Already ordered my sunglasses!

Yeah, in 2045 I might not be here either ... that's why I'm planning on making an effort to see this now. Anybody know anything about the John Day, Oregon area?

John Day is in the middle of nowhere, but there is a ton of great camping and hunting out that way. Should be a good place to see the eclipse if you're willing to rough it for a few days.

That is correct. 1:00 PM Central Standard time or 18:00 UTC

I should have clarified it was Universal time and not local.

Camping would be awesome, but I need to be back in the Bay Area on Tuesday morning for a doctors appointment. Just hope the drive up is worth the trouble.

People from the west part of the state (Portland) are going to Central Oregon and people in Central Oregon (my BIL lives there) are going to John Day to escape the madness. It will be total madness for sure.
