Both of your knock sensors are definitely bad?

 

That doesn't sound right. Mine was $50 5 years ago and had 2 connectors for the sensors, and 1 for something I didn't have.

 

Stealership may just be quoting him for the actual wire/conductor with the correct ends, for you to re-pin shit on his own. Lemme go look that part up...

 

Here you go. Here's what they're trying to sell him, something he can make for about 90¢, but it's as I expected: It's got the harness-end pin, with a tail on it. They probably make this in different colors, where the color changes based on the last 3-4 digits. It looks like 82998-12790 he was quoted is white, 82998-12780 is red, etc. EDIT: But it's weatherproof (note the red boot), as whatever goes in there needs to be, which is important.

Damn - @shifty` - you are more on top of things and I will ever be. What you showed the photo of looks correct. I feel like it's something I could make including the waterproof boot. Would heat shrink do the same thing?

 

@KNABORES - I no longer think the sensors themselves are bad. Based on what I'm pretty sure I saw, the wires have been chewed and the wire harness has been separated from the connector which is attached to the sensor itself. It's a safe bet the rodent didn't chew one and leave the other alone.

 

@bmf4069 - I feel like I saw somewhere in this wandering trip down the rabbit hole somebody who had a wire harness or connectors with pigtails but I don't know where that was. What @Shifty shared is what they gave me the product number for. Everything under there looks pretty clean and dry so I may be OK as long as I can find the right connectors and do this correctly, but clearly Toyota feels they need to make their money.

If you had a Pik-A-Part place in your area, I'd consider making a visit there.

No, heatshrink won't make that boot. But Bubba has a great point: You can hit a JY and if you can't find the right sensor harness, you can probably pull just about any water-resistant harness under the hood with 4+ wires and matching size pins, then de-pin and use those wires as he mentioned here:

Also, @daveeasa also has the tools to make harnesses, and if you tell him the wiring colors, I reckon he can actually just make you a couple pigtails and give you directions on how to de-pin. Re-pin is as easy as orienting/clocking the terminal correctly, then clicking into the connector.

FWIW, it looks like there's a Texan on fleaBay who also does just that: Hits JY, yoinks harnesses, de-pins, and sells similar length of wires in any color you want. But it's $10/2 wires. I can link him up if you want, but I'd lean on Dave first.

@shifty` - thanks for the pointer towards @daveeasa ... I also suspected it would be a no go on heatshrink.
I never thought of just going and pulling any kind of harness and then repurposing the wires.
I will try to get in there under the hood and work to determine colors.

@daveeasa - do I need to order new connectors or can I use the one of which the wire has been severed from and just remove the pins? Or is that way more work than I should invest, and I should just buy two new connectors?

I don't have this current matter resolved yet, but it feels waaaaay better venturing into the unknown with this community.

 

Depends if you have adequate length on the existing wire or on some replacement harness with compatible terminals.

I’d want to color match the wire so I’d just do something up clean with new parts. Unless the wire is long enough and it’s possible to crimp on new terminals and live with shorter total length.

Whoa whoa whoa, there's no need to de-pin or anything like that. The harness I got literally plugs into the knock sensors and into a harness somewhere on the 05-06. I only had to splice mine because I didn't have that connection. I don't have the pics, but they're in my threat I linked.

 

@NickB_01TRD -if I understand correctly, heat shrink might not hold the connectors together or be watertight.

 

@bmf4069 - do you recall where you acquired your harnesses? Do you have a part number possibly?

I got it from Street Toyota here in Amarillo. I just went up to the counter and said I need a knock sensor harness. I don't have the part number, but it should be around $50 or so.

 

Absolutely. It's what I would do. Either use an insulated watertight butt splice to join to the OEM lead, or if you have a soldering iron, I'd slip a heatshrink tube over, then solder together with a proper mesh joint, apply dielectric grease to the joint (or liquid electric tape in a pinch) before slipping the heatshrink tube over and locking it down. 2m49s shows the proper way to make a mesh joint, I'm only including this b/c OP shared he may not be super savvy. Could be worthwhile to wrap all the connections under there in 1/8 wire loom also, so any future rodents would chew the loom before getting to the harness, but I dunno.

Doing a little bit of research, I came across this on scamazon:
I haven't heard of the brand and I'm not even sure it would fit to begin with but wanted to hear from y'all.

@shifty` I'm looking at that space how the rodents get through and I'm wondering if stuffing it with steel mesh would do the trick (not steel wool because of course that stuff rusts if you think about it.)

 

Bronze and brass wool don't rust. I was thinking more like 'hardware cloth' for fencing (1/4" square), or even strainer mesh. Anything that would allow some breathability but too small for rodents to enter.

If you look in my thread, it looks like it should fit. The 00-04 didn't have a connector to hook into, it just splices in.
