Steering rack fail on my 19...53k miles

Just got the call I need a new steering rack on my 19...can't drive the truck in its current state. Toyota says they are seeing this a lot in lifted trucks. I have a 3 inch lift and did it right. Fortunately I got it covered under warranty which is typically not the case if it is lifted. Such a common issue they have 400 of these racks backordered. Who knows how long it will be to get it repaired. Anyone else have this happen?

 

what wheels and tires do you have?

 

18 inch toyota rims on bora spacers....295/70/18. I got the coachbuilder steering kit when I put the toytec coilovers on. Also dif drop kit...

 

I was wondering if mods had something to do with the dealer claim of lifted trucks having this issue alot. I dont really recall seeing alot of these failures on the forum.

 

Toyota does have a TSB on the rack, not sure how far it goes to year was. When I was issued a letter, if I remember correctly it did mention it ran up to 2021. I'm sure if you search around you may find your answer.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain JTEKT power steering gear assembly service parts for 2007-2021 Tundra and 2008-2022 Sequoia, part numbers 44250-0C160, 44250-0C131, 44250-0C170, and 11250-0C121. The power steering gear assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in an oil leak.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the power steering gear assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 17, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 21TH01.

By steering rack failing does this mean the power steering has failed? Or is the truck actually inoperable and cannot turn at all?

 

Power steering pump is fine...rack went out and barely turns. You can't drive it.

 

I think this only applies to defective parts that were installed after the truck was delivered. I will check again regardless...thanks

 

Doesn't hurt to try. Not sure I follow regarding defective parts after delivery. My 07 falls under this TSB and I haven't touched the rack at all.

 

I thought they checked my VIN under that already but I will check again...thanks UPDATE...My VIN says no unrepaired recalls.

 

Interesting, sorry to hear about your issue. I’ve not previously noticed this mentioned as a common issue on lifted tundras, or stock for that matter on the many social platforms I frequent that are tundra related in years of paying attention to them.

 

Been lifted most of the miles I've got on my 2016. I've got 7.5" and I've run spacers most of that time. Currently at around 79k miles.

I've got no issues with steering.

 

I got a notification a while back that mine had a recall for the potential defective power steering gear service replacement assemblies. NHTSA Recall No.21E-103

Hadn't done it yet. I got a 2019 SR5 TRD Sport.

 

Why R&P warranty is a nightmare for mechanics.

 

Is it the same issue like in late 2021 where 1 rack assembly line had a worn equipment and was making racks out of tolerance? 3 other assembly lines were ok.
