Switching to 5w30?

Ive run 5w-30 on many change’s myself. I do wonder though, is 5w-30 listed as acceptable in other countries due to oil availability? Like, is high quality synthetic 0w-20 just less common to find

 

Or could the flip side be true, that the only reason 0w20 is so readily available and pervasive here and not the rest of the world is due to an overbearing government agency with an agenda that is not found in other countries?

 

I'm curious where else in the rest of the world, outside of the US, is the Tundra (or the same 5.7 gas engine) a common vehicle.

 

If I could market a system to accurately monitor engine oil temp after the oil cooler I'd be hip deep in bald beaver pelts.

Before and after the cooler would be even betterer.

see...engines don't have oil related failures when there is a proper amount of oil in the pan, any oil.

 

Mostly the extended drain intervals (leading to the blockage of oil control rings) and some poorly designed synthetic formulations that can precipitate its additive package in areas with high temperatures (piston rings, turbochargers) can cause harm typically after 60k miles. Otherwise, nobody cares.

at 5k, the oil type matter not...the oil level however, does.

 

When times are tough I run vegetable oil up to 5,000. At 5,001 though catastrophic failure occurs .

canola or safflower?

 

I had a truck medium/psychic do a session with my truck and they told me the truck feels better when I use canola with a few drops of sage and lavender oils.

 

Well, like I said I do this when times are tough. That in mind, I use the original Crisco because when I’m done frying my funnel cakes (since I’m from PA) I pour it into jugs until I have enough for an oil change. It’s all about mastering how often I need to make funnel cakes in order to have enough oil for a change before the 5,000 miles. After 5,000 catastrophic engine failure occurs, but if I make too many funnel cakes to increase my oil change supply that could result in congestive heart failure. It’s a real balancing act.

The real test would be to use 0w-20 in a “loose tolerance” motor that asks for 5w-30.

 

I ran 10w-30 once.....

Should I sell my truck and get a new one now? Dammit.

Doing an extended rinse with this for one week or approximately 250 miles. Might leave it in for longer because the engine seems to run very quiet.

I switched to 5W-20 at 50k miles. I live in Florida and my truck rarely sees temperatures below freezing.

 

Interesting how if it was measured under Euro III the manual says the 3UR needs a minimum viscosity of 5w-30, but if you get one after Euro IV certification then suddenly the 0w-20 is at the top of the chart.

It can't be affecting mileage much. This was with 5w-30 last week. Small gas tank, slight anxiety, cruised at 70 most of it, not going downhill the whole way as the beginning and end of the tank were at the same station. Hand calc was 19.4. Anecdotal but I've only averaged 17 mpg or better seven times and four of those ran 5w-30.

Every 17k mi, when I change my oil, I drain the oil, fill the crank case with premium gas and run it for 24 hrs.

Why 5w-30? Why not 0w-30? That’s what I run, if you are worried about it then 0w-40? Personally I want oil getting to critical engine parts sooner so running a 0w-Xx makes most sense to me…

 

because....it does not matter what oil you use.

5w-30 makes my motor quieter (I think)
5w-30 is avail at Costco for CHEAP.

and to compound this oil based conundrum...if I run out of 5w-30, i use 0w-20..what?

and yes, I have even been known to mix them.

all the while....our Tesla mocks us by sitting there watching us change oil.
