So, I went to pick up some 8' 2x4s today in my 6.5 bed and, LOL, they don't fit on the diagonal. If the bed had been just 2 or 3" longer or a tad wider you would be able to get a fair number in there on the diagonal and shut the tailgate. But not. LOL. Seems like they should have thought this through just a little better to get some common size stuff to fit, especially when it is just so darned close.

That is annoying. I have done this in my 6.5' F150 a number of times and they do fit.

Before I picked up my 6.5 foot bed F series if I had to put 8'foot stuff in my 09 Crewmax I would just lay plywood
Down propped up on the bed extender then stack the thinner wood on that.

But now with a 6.5 foot bed I would just lay 8 foot pieces down straight with the bed extender out and strap as needed.

Sure, there are plenty of options when you do this often or have full loads. But for us suburbanites and part time farmers
that only need a few now and then it would be nice if they would fit. Especially when we are also stuck with that bogus Toyota tonneau cover that I would be leery of driving with open. So, we can't even really lay them in the bed with the ends up on the tailgate.

The crazy thing is I can actually carry a few of these in my 2016 Corvette with the hatch closed. But not the Tundra??!! Too funny.

edit: but i am not sure how they determine actualy length (measuring points)

Idonno, I'm not a construction worker. Just a suburban recreational pickup owner and I've managed to move 8 foot items in both a 5.5 and 6.5 foot bed truck with just a little extra thought. If the tailgate has to go down so be it.

Strange. Pretty sure the previous gen 6.5' bed can fit 8' boards diagonally with the tailgate closed.

No I get it, Toyota will probably end up with a very reliable truck but dropped the ball on plenty of little utility related things things inside and out that matter to all sorts of truck buyers because "Love us, pat us on the back, we finally did the redesign, now STFU and leave us alone for another 10 years."

    I’ll just leave this here…

Snug for sure, but why not just put the end against the cab on the floor and let the other end rest against the inside of the gate, under an angle?

I was thinking the same, but honestly can’t remember. That would expect my memory to go back to a time before buying a few 2x4’s was too baller for this guy. (Yes, I know lumber prices have dropped significantly again)

    Probably because the 2nd / 2.5 gens had a 78.6” bed, where the 3rd gens have a 77” bed
That’s an “8’ stud”, not an 8’ long board… the stamps give it away. :D

Lowe’s!! Granted, this is a spare from an old project, just the piece I had in the garage.

Finding a straight 2x4x8 at that store is like winning the lottery.
