White lights don't cut through the dust as good as yellow/amber.

I thought you had a LED whip for that.

At least one of us :anonymous: is very particular about what other people run as chase lights.

Basically, no, any type of white light facing rear is not acceptable (that's not just me; it's the law for all kinds of reasons.) Use white lights for backing up or to light up your tailgate for cooking.

Chase lights should be some shade of yellow or amber. The idea is, the colour should be visible through heavy clouds of dust, as when you're "chasing" or "following" another vehicle off-road at speed. It won't matter so much for most trails in and around Sedona... the only place I've seen enough speed for trail blindness is on the run between Cinders and the falls. But in Anza-Borrego and Ocatillo Wells, there are occasional horrible collisions because everyone is driving fast off trail, in any direction, and dust everywhere. Once that happens, even stopping won't save you, because you can get hit by someone else that's moving. It's no bueno.

Mounting at least one "chase" light facing rear lowers the chances that your trail buddy will rear-end you if you stop suddenly and forget to say so in the radio.

As for my particularity, the color I prefer to follow... and they won't blind a follower at night... is the Cali-raised "A piller" lights (which are not bright enough as A-piller lights). The colour is more orange than yellow, which isn't as pretty, but doesn't "disappear" in light coloured dust like more yellow wavelengths do.

For throwing fancy money at the problem, Baja Designs has very bright, very yellow lights. They "shine" at letting people see you from very far away (like, up on a ridge a half mile out), but sometimes don't let the driver 3 truck lengths behind you, see you through dust. Also, it can suck to follow BD lights at night because they are F'ing bright.

Edit: I missed T2S last year, but heard @KevinK ran green light facing back and that it was visible through dust. If you got a whip and can run it in green, that could work.

I thought maybe the chase light was why the raptor's red third brake light lights up when the lights are turned on, instead of just when you hit the brakes.

Not for any reason that makes sense. A red light could be better than no light, but that amber wavelength range is best for visibility in dust or fog.

People mount forward facing amber "fog" lights and run them instead of white headlights when the fog is bad. Because white light will be reflected off dust or fog and essentially creates white blindness, a wall of reflected light you cannot see through.

What do you mean? Only thing that’s been on that list for awhile is the chase lights

made progress on that front. I have some lights I can use for that (in amber or green if I buy the lens @KevinK) and have the switch panel to run it. Just need to get a bracket made so I don’t have to do any drilling and I’ll be set
That is to mark that the vehicle is over 80” wide. All manufacturers that sell a vehicle need to have 3 lights visible from the front and the rear to denote this. Most did it it with amber roof lights and maybe 3 red ones on the tailgate for their duelly’s.

Ford opted to make these light fashionable by putting them in the 3rd brake light and then 3 ambers in the grille, making every Tacoma owner want to copy them because they thought it was just to look cool

    You're asking @FrenchToasty right?

I see others giving you answers for BD but they're more expensive and too bright for chase lights. And horrible to follow at night. People but them because BD is cool, but not blinding the trail buddy behind you is more cool.

Kyle, we keep :boink: you about not having chase lights because you keep whining about not having A/C and insisting we let you be in front. If you want to play trail leader, install chase lights. :angrygirl:

    Did not know this.
@Sunnier, how wide you sittin wit da LT? I’d imagine if it’s mando on new vehicles 80”, then it probably is also for vehicles that have been modified to reach that same threshold. Whether they’d enforce it or not, is another story.

He’s lookin for good parts. I just bought a new case, that I’ll swap my internals into. Makes me curious tho what happened to his locker, as his internals were apparently compromised. I may have been able to get his case if he ends up buying a new complete locker, but that ship has sailed. Thanx tho, good lookin out. If you happen to learn how his locker failed, please share

It's been a while since I measured, but Hulk's widest is the outside front tire stance, which is the same as the outside tire go outside tire on my stock 2.5 gen. I think both are 83". So I'm not sure how this fits with Kyle's data because I think the 3rd tear-facing red light in my 2.5 gen only comes on with brake activation.

Nor do you have 3 marker lights in the front of your big turd, amirite? I honestly thought that special lighting was only required 8ft and up, aka 'wide load' territory

Maybe I'm smoking crack and my recollection is wrong on width. Whatever it is, I'm certain the tire stance width is the same in front on the 1st gen AC with long travel as the stock 2.5 gen. I guess I'll have to verify that it's 83".
