    Hello all,
A friend of mine has a 2006 tundra with an engine that lost a cylinder. He also bought a wrecked 2006 4runner with a 4.7 to replace that engine. I'm wondering if this is a direct replacement or if it will take some rewiring etc to work. Its really cheap and tundras in my area are going for 10k with 200k miles. On car-part.com they have 4runner engines seperate from tundras. Anyone with experience let me know. I've tried to look through forums already and havent found anything. Both have vvti I know this.

    Thanks!

I believe they’re both Vvti engines. You just may have to swap accessories over and you will HAVE to swap harnesses

Thanks for the reply! I was hoping that wasn't the case but it makes sense. Seems it might be easier just to stick with getting a used engine from a tundra and forget about the 4runner engine.

I would 100% go for it were I in your case and:

    - you have the skills to pull of a swap like this
    - FSM to help guide/fall back on
    - you're willing to strip longblock and re-accessorize

There isn't any reason this shouldn't work for you if you're willing to tear everything down (and buy subsequent gaskets/parts/do the research...etc) and have the benefit of time on your side. The bonus is cost savings and knowing that you're putting the right parts in/on and doing it right. To my knowledge, and perhaps I'll be corrected here, there isn't really anything with these motors that will not be obtainable for you either through OEM or aftermarket considering that you have a complete vehicle you're starting with already and are basically wanting to just swap longblocks - thus you don't need to go hunting for the odd dealer-only bracket or harness at the 25th hour.

There is inherit risk in both scenarios. Best of luck with your choice and please consider reporting back to this thread as a means of closing the loop to help others in future.
