do you just replace the battery like always or do you have to do something else.? With all the electronics built into these trucks I was wondering if you just change the battery like normal.

1st start it will start then stall, just start it again. It will take a few miles to rest the MPG's and miles till empty.

and be happy it's not an auto stop start battery at twice the price.
your 2018 is more analog than the later 2.5 gens, and I won't even get into the electronics "load" on the new Tundra.

Easy peasy. Do check your connections at the battery. My battery cable ends were crapped out and I replaced them at 45k miles or so.

Are the 'start/stop' batteries any different? Seems like a scam.

They (edit - are supposed to) have more capacity to take the abuse (on - off - on - off) plus the electronics load.
I know they cost alot more because my wife has an auto start/stop battery in her Outback.
She left the cabin light on and forgot about it. Two times. After the second time it cost me $500 for a battery.
The previous gen Outback battery with no auto start/stop is about $200.
    So I got curious. Toyota wants $250 Cdn for a 2018 - 2021 battery.
The 2022 is $530 plus taxes.

Just make sure to disconnect the battery before taking it out.

Interstate was $105 at Costco. But they don't swap it for you, so bring tools if you want to avoid making a return trip to recycle the old one.

It must be waaaay better for the environment then. Does it come with a bumper sticker so everyone knows you're a better person than they are?

I never thought about the battery for a start stop engine, that is the worst thing for a engine. Maybe just maybe you safe a gallon of gas a year and that's a big maybe.
So just do it like I have done before on my vehicles.
    Negative disconnect first
Positive next. And reverse going in.
So what did you mean. First start than stalls second start good to go. Do it's going to stall on the first start up?

Well my 2021 Rav4 battery didn't have anything special about it. It was built for start stop and still died at 2 years. That's with me disabling start/stop every time I got in the car. Replacement was actually cheaper at the dealer then compared to anyplace else including Costco, which is really strange.

Thats interesting about the short life.
Subaru actually has a battery replacement campaign going on for anyone whose battery has died early.
I also edited my previous post to say "they are supposed to have" more capacity - 8^0
I can only verify the double cost.

A little off topic but…. I bought a 1989 Celica GT-S new, the first new car I’d ever bought. It had a Panasonic battery in it… 14 years later I had to replace it with a Toyota True Start.

From what I read, start stop vehicle require an 'enhanced flooded battery'. That is supposed to offer more than double the number of starts when compared to a normal flooded battery. Who knows. Mine certainly didn't last long.

Yup, and the reason it may stall once or twice is because the computer has to relearn air/fuel mixture - don't take it straight out onto the interstate because it won't start learning until you slow down at the end of an off ramp, which could be 80 miles from home and you've forgotten it needs to relearn stuff...

I just replaced mine 3 weeks ago. Went out to lunch and when I came out it was dead. I had to get a jump and go to the autoparts store to get one. It lasted 5 years the OEM one.

My fingers are crossed… just put in a new Optima Yellow Top D35, built this month. Original factory battery went 76k.

Right now the Optima is $289USD at AutoZone.

I’ve had a 6v Red Top in my ‘60 VW for 11 years, and it still cranks fine after sitting 7 month stretches.

I had a 2003 solara that to when you changed the battery you had to start it and let it idle for about 15 minutes for it to read the computer ,it would even stall when you first changed it so I'm thinking the tundra will be the same.It must be a Toyota thing.

Mine died picking my son up from school. Got a jump start from someone. I always keep cables in the toolbox. Went to Walmart and to my surprised, they had 27, and 24f batteries. No 27f however. Big difference with the f in the model. I found a very nice 24f that had better cranking and cold amps than the factory. I got that and installed it in the parking lot.

I was expecting it to die within the year but I’m going on 2 years still starting strong.

Mine always stalls out if you disconnect the negative terminal for a few minutes. Doesn’t matter if you change the battery, intake, or just letting it reset for whatever reason. It starts, stalls, and fires right back up. Someone about disconnecting the battery.

Can confirm, my Subaru does the same thing.

my GMC used to that just for fun every so often… usually on my lunch break making me late with My crew in the truck. Sigh.
