Clunk immediately after I put in drive or reverse

I’ve been trying to diagnose this clunk I am getting from my driver side. I don’t believe it’s the abs self check because it occurs immediately after I put it in drive or reverse.

For example, I start my truck, shift to drive and once I take the some pressure off the brakes and move slightly forward, I immediately hear a clunk.

In reverse, same circumstances but the clunk has a deeper sound and it’s not as loud as it is in drive.

    Any thoughts or idea?

Check your brakes. I would pull rotors to check both sides, or turn the wheel and check via the opening. May need to remove caliper though

On that same note, any suspension work?

It sounds like it’s coming from the brakes/rotors area. What could cause that sound if it something with the brake components?

I had the same thing and it turned out to be my brakes. The pads were worn down to almost the wear mark and had them and the rotors replaced and it was all good afterwards. You can verify this by having someone put it in R and let off the brake while holding your hand on the tire. When I did that I could feel the clunk in my tire.
I was told it is because the leading edges of the brake pads were worn down to where the was no bevel on them and it was creating a bit of stiction.

While checking your brakes, check you front end links on the sway bar. Somrtines they're left slightly loose and make noise with movement.

@IowaGuy made a great point with the breaks. I was leaning towards something jammed on the brake pad

Thank you. This might be my problem…I don’t have anyone to get behind the wheel at the moment, but I had my daughter hold the tire and she felt the clunk in the tire…she’s only 10 so I will need to confirm it myself when I have a chance haha.

    Were you experiencing this?

P - foot on brakes - shift to D, foot off brakes and then clunk

P - foot on brakes - shift R, foot off brakes and then clunk

Check the fasteners on your brakes- had the same issue- one of the bolts on the caliper had worked itself loose and fallen out. Every time I switched from park to reverse or drive it would shift the caliper and make a clunk. Replaced the bolt and checked the rest- problem solved.

Exactly that. I was worried that it was my transmission or drive train somewhere. I also park in the garage so mine seemed to echo or be extra loud in the AM when I first put it in R. What was strange is that it would do it the worst mostly after sitting for a couple hours. If I drive a ways and went from D to R it seemed less.

This could have been my issue too and might have just been fixed when the brakes were re-done. I think the pads or calipers were moving a bit causing the clunk.

Mine also seemed worse on the passenger side front for whatever reason. When I felt the clunk I thought maybe it was in the front suspension or 4wd but I could feel it in the tire as soon as the foot came off the brake and before the wheel even really moved even a bit.

Thank you @IowaGuy. I will get my brakes checked and hopefully this issue will get resolved.
