Hello all! I just bought my 2016 tundra last week and I was super stoked until tonight. I went to a buddy’s house and went to move the truck and it stalled. It kept stalling out it would not start at all and it did this for about 15-20 mins and then suddenly it was fine. Made it home perfectly. Truck has 77k miles. I’m kinda freaking out cuz I traded in my beautiful 2019 Tacoma for this truck to pull my trailer. Any ideas? Thx all.

An intermittent problem like yours will probably be very difficult to diagnose from here, especially without codes. If it were mine, I would check the fuel pump first. Good luck.

All knowledge I have comes from reading these forums and mostly I've seen your issue with flexfuel that's why I asked. Many people experience wierd issues when their battery is dieing also though.

Check the battery. You can go to AutoZone or somewhere similar and they can test the battery for free.

Not sure if it’s the same issue, but my wife’s 2007 Lexus GX470 had a similar problem. At first I thought it might be the battery, but it checked out good at Autozone. Turned out to be the positive battery terminal connection was a bit loose and corroded. I replaced it and tightened it on real tight, and now it starts up fine. Double check your battery terminals just in case.

Its great advice to check the battery first, since our trucks do some really funky things when they start to go south. That being said, people here with this problem usually get lots of dash lights along with the crazy problems. Any dash lights OP?

If just bought from dealer, let 'em know. Batt/fuel pump or starter is my guess.

I did see some lights come up but they are the same as to when you turn the key. I didn’t notice anything other than that.

Have adjustable column? Could be breaking or broken ignition wiring where it flexes frequently.

So I did some more digging around and found that it is a flex fuel model. Not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing.

It’s both. It probably explains your problem which is good. It’s likely causing your problem, which is bad. Fuel pump replacement and ECU flash are the fixes, although I’m not sure the flash is permanent fix, or just a reset. The computer incorrectly reads the ethanol percentage in the fuel creating the hard starting issue.

Check if your last 5 digits of the VIN match the "additional information" on this TSB. If it does, then you might be in luck. TSB is good for 96mos or 80K miles. Your 2016 w/77K miles should qualify. Print this and take to a trusted Toyota Dealership. This happened to my Flex Fuel 2016 at around 73K miles. Good Luck OP!

I'm sure you can probably search and find the thread on here but I believe with Techstream you can reset the ethanol reading with is supposed to fix the situation.

Is that like an ecu flash? I had that done on my Tacoma but I wasn’t crazy about it. It made the throttle very touchy. I did gain an mpg or 2 out of it tho.

No Techstream is the tool the dealers use but you can buy it on Amazon and it gives you many different OBD options and diagnostics more than a typical reader and one of the options is to reset the alcohol % that the truck thinks its getting which is only present on flex fuel trucks.
