I had new tires installed today and asked for the existing tires to hold onto. Unloading them at home I noticed some damage to one of the tires (see photo). Before I ask the installer, does this look like damage that would have resulted from dismounting? It's a new to me truck, but I've had both front wheels off and on the truck doing some other work and didn't notice this before although certainly wasn't inspecting for it. Could have gone unnoticed I guess. Thoughts?

To me it looks like it was done when they were breaking the bead loose.

Not quite 5 years old. Cali sun is tough on em. See some minor dryrot cracking on the sidewall, but nothing crazy. The bead breaker is likely what caused the damage to the sidewall as previously mentioned. Not sure if there’s any recourse as a tire should be able to take that.

I know it is not always kosher to name shops in these situations, but I did think the response was fair. I offered, since I had opted to forgo the certificates on the new tires at time of purchase that I saw that as an opportunity for a resolution, and the manager agreed to split the cost of the certs and also noticed and removed the disposal fee that was automatically tacked on. Good outcome given the situation...

I believe here they are legally required to collect the disposal fee even if you keep the tires. Sounds like you got resolution.
