I’m a retired engineer. I’m also an idiot. I’m living proof that you can be both. Don’t pat yourself to hard on the back there newbie.

Well, one thing is clear. The guy turned his pickup into an assault vehicle. For shame! Ban assault vehicles!!

Immediately jumping to blaming wheel spacers / offset on this?

I’d like to know where you find the level of audacity to rule out blaming a lack of trans cooler or possible lack of tow hooks as the root cause of this accident? The gall of some people.

    Did anyone confirm payload?

This is the most useful statement on this thread. I'm an engineer (with a Master's even), but not a mechanical, civil, structural, or chemical engineer. As an electrical engineer I also depend on the knowledge of other EE's and electrical designers, many of whom know much more than I do about specific electrical engineering topics. Whoever installed the wheels on that truck did not consider the whole system. That much is obvious. That person was likely not a qualified individual for that job. That much is not as obvious, but is my opinion. They should be held liable when they modify a system that could quickly become very dangerous if it fails.

hell, I’d even go so far as the omission of a driver’s side grab handle could be a contributing factor…

    So…

I think everyone here is getting their panties in a wad over the way the guy made his point. He’s an engineer not a writer. He has a legitimate point though, regardless.

Did he jump to a strong conclusion with limited data? Yep, probably.

was what he said entirely wrong? Nope.

we have all seen some redneck engineering or.. Ahem…been young and broke and done some ourselves… cough, cough.

But, there is probably no need to crucify the guy for his lack of tact. He’s new here. Cut him some slack.

My comment came across poorly. It was actually intended to be a funny comment based on some of the ridiculous things my Austrian friend tells me about.

Your car literally has to have a giant book from the manufacturer that describes every component in detail. You cannot modify any component without essentially getting written confirmation from the manufacturer that your modification is safe. Can't put bigger tires. Can't lift your vehicle. Etc.

My buddy has a 1993b Caprice and he had to replace part of the rear bumper. He literally has something describing how that modified bumper has been tested and approved for safety.
