I’ve done Amtrak Empire Builder coach between Chicago and N Idaho probably 6 times each direction, and the Amtrak Cascades between Portland and Seattle at least a dozen. A few years ago, We took the kids from Portland to Chicago in the sleeper car on the Empire Builder - that was pretty cool. We’re talking about doing Chicago to San Fran (the California Zephyr) and then the Coast Starlight from San Fran up to Portland one of these days.

doing the sleeper car isn’t cheap, but it includes meals and a concierge - it’s considered “first class” for the train world.

What I meant was that the cheaper hotel may not be worth the extra time to get there. Granted, you're cruising in the luxury of a Pro Tundra, so it's not necessarily a terrible experience.

Would you mind sharing the price? I'd have to have a better destination than the hell holes of Chicago and Portland to consider it, but I'm still curious.

Old worn out blue jeans. Cut into 2” wide strips, Roll up till about 1/2” dia, tie with some cotton string and dip/soak into melted paraffin wax.
    Awesome and waterproof fire starters

dryer lint in this house has too much animal fur in it. Fucking stinks when you light it

Anyone scoring under 10 on this should have to share what their numbers are, just so we all know what kind of deviants we are dealing with. :p:boink:

100% kidding. Nobody needs to share anything. I just wanted to call you all deviants. :D

    10 and 17 for me.
I’ve been with a few who were arrested, and bailed them out. But I’ve never been the one cuffed and put in the back of the cruiser.
And I’ve talked about Skydiving more than a few times, but just haven’t actually had the timing work out.

I was thinking 10 was more along the lines of cuffs and a cruiser ride. A “citation” Is just a ticket

All major train hubs are cities. There’sa lots of good things to see in Chicago, Portland, San Francisco, etc. or you can simply ride the train to Wolf, Montana or Tomah, Wisconsin (read: middle of fucking nowhere) but the experience isn’t the same as unloading in Union Station.

Portland to Chicago and back in a “roomette” was ~$650 i think? You can fit two people in the roomette, but you pay for the room either way - it’s basically two chairs facing each other with a private door into the hallway. The chairs fold down to one bed and there’s a bunk overhead that drops down.

in the morning, the concierge “turns up” your room while you are at breakfast. In the evening, they “turn down” while you are at dinner. They book your reservations in the diner, and they have coffee, tea, juice, and snacks available in your car. The bathroom and shower is shared for the car in the lower level (they are private rooms, but not attached to your roomette).

a full sleeper “room” (fits up to 4) is a fair bit more $$$

the glass ceiling lounge car is the best place to watch the scenery and play some cards or read a book.

Nice info! I can understand the draw of some of the cities, but I just don't have the desire. I feel crowded in a small city like SLC, and Seattle was not my favorite either. For the architecture I would probably endure NYC, but not in recent times with the crime wave. This would all be years out anyway. Hoping they'll improve in the next few years as people realize anarchy sucks.

So, how private are we talking for the various options 'roomette' vs full sleeper 'room'?? Serious question...

Also, I'm guessing turn up and turn down are hospitality terms for 'going through your shit'... :D

There isn’t a lot of room. Privacy wise it’s sliding pocket door with a lock and a curtain on the roomette. Picture two first class airplane seats facing each other with a 18”x24” coffee table between them and about 8-12” of room from the seat to the aisle wall. Take the width of a train car, subtract the hallway aisle, divide the remainder by two and that is the width across the roomette.

Turn up = remove the bedding, fold up the upper bunk, arrange the lower bunk back into chairs with the table, leave you a local newspaper if you requested it.

Turn down = arrange the chairs into a bunk, fold down upper bunk, make the beds.

If you’ve ever done a cruise, this is similar service. It’s also customary to tip them at the end of the trip.

The concierge is actually staying in one of the roomettes in the same car - we spent a bit of time talking to them, sharing stories, asking questions (that’s how we learned the Zephyr, going west, is one of the more scenic routes, with Empire Builder going east being very close second).

The full size room (I think there are typically only 4 or 8 per train) have two bunks along one wall. The lower serve as a couch during the day, a separate chair or two, and are the full width of the train minus an aisle along the one side wall.

No one goes to Spo-compton for spring break. I think either waves of Zags come in for basketball (watching locally) or there’s some convention.
