I believe Toyota technically calls it a strainer in the tank.

What do they call the strainer if you have both the external fuel filter on the rail and that bag strainer in the tank?

gulp, just had to buy 4 new Michelin Defender tires. $1325 installed. ugh

edit: So wifey at discount tire getting this done for me and they say that 265 width is the smallest I could go. Is this a function of the aftermarket rims that I am on? If so, what is the smallest width that the stock rims take? I may need to go back to stock with this kinda $$$$.

Yeah, now looking at the Michelin site it shows these should last 70K miles and they got maybe 40K. Something is up.

EVAP is sealed system between tank and the engine bay, basically. You need to have a certain level of vacuum through the system. There's always a vent/valve somewhere in the system to release pressure (open) if vacuum is too high, or create vacuum (close) if vacuum is too low. Your gas cap needs to seal the tank or else it becomes a vent to the system which is supposed to be sealed or open based on that other vent/valve. This is why, on most EFI systems, you're supposed to turn the cap until it clicks. It's not uncommon to get the same code if either (a) your gas cap and/or fuel filler neck isnt' sealing properly - '03-'04 had issues/TSB with cracks in the filler neck, hence the mention - or (b) you didn't fully tighten until at least 1-2 clicks on the cap.

... or not leaking, yep. It's all about pressure/vacuum.

Totally read your comment in Tom Smykowski voice:rofl:

Yeah…. You may have missed the part where I said; when I loosen the cap to fill up, it sucks in a huge gasp of fresh air when the seal first breaks. Definitely not the gas cap. It’s probably the fuel filter.

I absolutely hate Michelin tires. Overpriced and don't last. My last two sets on the RAV4 got dry rot and I swore to never buy them again.

Their original LTX M/S used to last because they were a harder rubber compound. Not so much for their LTX M/S 2s though. Those are softer and wear out in 1/2 the time (at least for me). I could've gotten money back on the mileage warranty but at the time you couldn't get their tires since there was backlog on everything and I needed to pass inspection in a couple weeks.

I saw that, just wasn't responding to it because "fuel filter"

You shouldn't have so much vacuum you're hearing a huge gasp at every tank. Maybe a little quarter-second 'pss', but I rarely even hear that. My truck isn't nearly similar to yours though, we're on opposite ends of the year spectrum.

And to @DJenerated's point, I guess I should add: If this was a leak, there are different codes for that. 'small leak' and 'gross leak', actually. So I doubt it's that.

It's more than likely something failing that's causing negative pressure, like your EVAP vent is either unplugged electrically and not releasing vacuum at proper time, or the vent/servo thingy (drawing a blank, brain not working, kid got the 'rona today, I prob got it too) AH - solenoid, the vent solenoid, if exists, isn't releasing pressure

I have some Vision rims on right now but still have the stock in the garage. It looks like I got about 40k +/-. I like the Defenders as they never left me wanting more for the rare times I am off road and have great on road handling, but I think I need to look for a more road oriented/inexpensive tire in the future.

Didnt shop around as the wifey was taking the truck to just have a tire rotation and the tech there told her two tires needed replacing very soon and 2 others were getting close. I was very surprised. I used to run Michelin Pilot Powers on my road bikes and I loved the grip but they didnt last worth a damn. Whelp, I am going to ride these again until next time.

Making progress on my fixes after the moving truck slipped in ice & landed on my truck.
    New (used) black door installed.
New (used) fender installed, jambed & painted with Spraymax 2k primer, toyota black & Spraymax 2k aerosol clear coat. Ran out of clear on my fender flare so I'll get that done over the weekend when the next can shows up.
First time using the 2k Spray cans, I'm pretty impressed...
    Next I'll hopefully get some bronze & spray my rims over this summer. 20230311_110049.jpg 20230311_134648 (1).jpg 20230323_084003.jpg 20230324_131905.jpg 20230324_153250.jpg
