Still makes no sense. Instead of destroying the covers they remove, they could keep them at the port install point or dealer, apply the fix when it is available, and install them on later builds. That would add zero additional liability for Toyota AND be consistent with what they are doing with the rest of us. We can go round and round and round on what makes common sense and business sense. And we can keep disagreeing.

Hello! I have been trying to sell my MX4 for awhile now, actually. Long before the recall on the Toyota OEM.

Nearly new MX4 Tonneau Cover for sale. $600. BAK Industries 448441. Hard Folding; Lockable Using Tailgate Handle Lock; Matte Black; Aluminum.

Fits: 2022/2023 Toyota Tundra 6.5 Ft. (78.7 In.) Without Trail Special Edition Storage Box

    Manufacturer details: https://bakflip.com/p/bakflip-mx4-tonneau-cover/v/toyota/tundra/2022/

I purchased this cover with my new Tundra in June of 2022 and paid $1,450. Slight wear on the rubber on the inside rails. No issues, I just don't need this tonneau anymore since I upgraded to an ARE topper.

Send me a DM if you are interested.

Reviewing the work order to address both recalls I am not exactly sure what they did with the Tonneau Cover inspection (screenshot attached). I will keep an eye out for Toyota official response...

That is pretty cryptic, indeed. The way I read it is that they say your truck is not equipped with a Toyota OEM tonneau cover, therefore the action is completed. Which would be very strange if you actually HAVE a Toyota cover. And the campaign they specify is for an "in stock" vehicle so it looks like this notation would apply to a pre-sale check to see if a Tundra had the cover. This all makes no sense for a vehicle already in service, especially if it does indeed have a Toyota tonneau cover. I'd make them explain this to you.

Yes I purchased this truck 100% with the Toyota factory installed Tonneau cover (2023 Platinum) in December 2022; I did just re-check my VIN under the "toyota.com/recall" link and over weekend I had 2 recalls and now I see:

"There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle."

So yes, I agree I will be monitoring this closely and if a REMEDY is identified specifically BY Toyota and I read about it I will be heading back to my dealer for THAT FIX!

its so toyota can track all vins to see if a oem cover was or wasnt installed after it left FIO/PIO installs. its the DIO, after the sale or used sales that added a oem cover they are worried about.

if the vin doesnt have oem cover installed, its documented and removed from the list.

No, the PIO covers are also suspect as they have been removing them from the trucks that got those and from any future builds. Earlier in this thread we heard from some folks here who got trucks like that where the covers had been deleted in process and removed from the window sticker. Certainly, at some point going forward... maybe even now... only DIO and individuals getting them from Toyota dealers' parts inventories will be a concern as all of them in the mfg and PIO pipeline should be removed. And I suspect that dealer sales of the parts are also on hold.

Mine is a PIO, I assume, because it isn't listed as a dealer installed accessory. I am going to call my dealer and see what they have to say.

I just contacted my dealer and got a nice young lady on the line... who had zero new information beyond what is in the recall notice. IOW, there is nothing they will do until Toyota provides a remedy. No intermediate inspection, etc... Strange that different dealers seem to be handing this differently. I honestly don't understand what they are up to in jresurf's case above. Seems totally out of bounds.

Edit: the other odd thing is that the recall comes and goes from my App. Sometimes it is there, other times it says I am all clean and clear. LOL.

Yeah 100% sure this was a Toyota factory installed Toneau cover so I am also more confused now about the "repair" by my dealer. I might try another dealer to get/hear their opinion. Also very curious what others hear from their dealers and experience on this issue...

See my earlier post. The recall seems to come and go at random from the app.

Must be a real emergency then. LOL I am ignoring it as there is no way in hell it will come off in the closed position, and in the upright I will just secure it. Mine will be up 2 times a year This recall notice is for the idiots that dont take care of thier vehicles and pay attention to what's going on while exercising common sense

Agree, I don't see how it could come off in the closed position... except one fellow posted above somewhere that his popped out of the side rail somehow. But it would still be constrained and held in other ways.

Exactly . I would go with he closed it with something too high in the box and then blames the cover lol

Had I been told of this recall, I'd have waited to buy the truck. I traded in my Tacoma WITH a full hard cover for a 23 Tundra Limited TRD with a full hard cover which was removed the minute I signed the dotted line! No warning, no timeframe. Now I need to rent a trailer to haul equipment next week. Had I known, I would have kept the Tacoma another week.

No remedy or remedy date and the dealer I used is 2.5 hours away. Nice truck, bad purchase.

Exactly how I feel. I sold a Tacoma with a great hard cover for this... this... fiasco. I feel robbed on several levels.

So today I had my 10k maintance. I went in and. they brought up the cover recall and were like we need to take it off. so they did. They ended up throwing it in the back of the truck with the bed extender laying on top of it. You'd think they would wrap it up or something. Then when exiting the parking lot I went around back where all the employees park. Well guess what all their 3d gens with the same exact cover are still on their trucks. Wonder how long until they are forced to take them off. I made sure to mention it in their survey.

Go home and put it back on........Fuck em....just use common sense and strap it in the upright position until they come up with a fix.......or write you a check on the spot so you can order a new one. It aint ever coming off in the closed state

I’m supposed to go in this Saturday to have my Toyota Tonneau cover installed on my 2023 Tundra but, figured that Toyota would notify dealerships NOT to install them until the recall fix is confirmed. Think I might call Toyota and ask them.

I was in last Saturday for the 5K and the dealer said I could keep it on but the liability would be mine should something happen. I accepted the liability and am not too worried of it coming off since I'll be keeping it flat on the bed and will check it periodically; who knows how long it will be before a "fix" is issued so I'll continue to use it with caution.

I called Toyota Customer Service today. Spoke to them about Recall on Tonneau cover and was concerned that Dealership was going to install on Saturday. After documenting my concerns she told me to contact Dealership I called and spoke with my Service Advisor. Explained my concern with Saturday’s appointment. She said that the Parts Manager sent the Tonneau cover back to the Toyota Parts Distribution warehouse.

I did the same thing, figure it's worth the risk while checking it occasionally. When mine was at the dealer they did tighten it up and noted it wasn't loose. The service department said the new cover would likely be available in June.

I use my bed like a trunk. I'm delivering electronics next week so I'll need to rent a small uhaul trailer, pay the extra gas mileage, and take the extra 2 hours out of my life to deal with the local uHaul (15 miles from home). I've been in contact with the NYS AG. I bought the cover, Toyota kept the cover with no offer of compensation, remedy timeframe, or option to keep it SO I CAN HAVE MY CASE HANDLED BY ANOTHER TOYOTA DEALER!!

Odd they didn't mention the recall until the minute AFTER I signed everything. The lack of a cover was 100% deal stopper.

Exactly, "I use my bed like a trunk" is an exact quote right out of my keyboard to this thread several times. And last I checked it still rains and snows once in awhile which makes transport without a cover of just about anything except piles of gravel impossible. But your case is even worse in that they neglected to tell you before plunking down your $. Not odd, that had to be deliberate. Toyota could make this all go away by refunding what we paid for the covers so we can get new ones in the aftermarket. But they don't. I just have to SMH. I sent Toyota Corporate a snail mail letter that should have landed there by now. Maybe I'll hear back from them next week.

I thought the only time they are suppose to remove the cover is at the owner request, according to recall / remedy. Like everyone else I use it for trunk space. I need the cover every day, if they are that concerned then refund me the money and I'll go buy something else.

My cover was part of my build, got the truck three weeks ago and they said the cover was back ordered, then when the recall hit they cut me a check for $1,000 (what I paid for the cover). I went ahead and ordered the MX4 hoping that doesn’t have any issues.
