Need new sway bar bushings

Been hearing a clunk when rocking side to side, like when not going over a speed bump perfectly straight. It’s been doing it for a little while and really bugged me that something wasn’t right. Fastened the phone under the rig and went over some bumps. Looks like I’m in for new sway bar bushings. Was wondering what people recommend. For a quick search, people say poly is prone to squeezing. Any other pros/cons to rubber vs poly? Let me know.

 

I ran with poly Energy suspension bushings for awhile and they weren't bad at all. No obvious signs of deformation when I pulled the sway bar and they didn't really squeak.

The DCs should have a 27mm sway bar. Make sure you do not get the smaller 23mm bushings for the AC.

Energy is great for poly mounts. You could technically go OEM, but you're never going to get remotely close at the price point Energy offers.

 

Get the black energy suspension ones. They're graphite impregnated (dry lube) and need less maintenance iirc.

In case that doesn't fix the problem, next you should consider the transmission mount and transmission mount cross member (for cracks around the mounting bolts). I got video of it earlier this afternoon. I’m certain it’s the bushings.

 

Looking to buy but, quite a few of the reviews say they won’t fit a 1st Gen DC Tundra.

Steering rack bushings only is all I see on their website. Maybe have to buy universal?

They're the universal ones. You may need to use the provided bracket too.

 

The ones I linked for sure fit a DC.

I had bought some black Moog ones prior and those were too small -- 23mm for an AC.

Yeah, it says both the ones I purchased and those don't fit, but I know I have a 27mm bar.

 

Thanks for your input. One more question, did you reuse the stock bushing straps/hangers or am I going to have to source something new to hold the bushings?

 

I reused them, if I had to make any modifications they were minuscule.

 

Bushings came in today. Installed, took for a quick drive and the clunk is definitely gone. Feels good.

 

I bought OEM bushings (which I may or may not regret after your success with aftermarket parts at more than half the price). I'll install them soon.

While were on the topic, I see that the Energy bushings came with lube. Does anyone know if I should lube the OEM bushings (rubber), and if so, with what?

 

When dealing with that a few years back, the FSM kept referring to lithium soap base glycol grease. After a brief rabbit hole search, turns out they were speaking of their Toyota rubber grease. Instead of looking further, I simply chose to use what they recommended, so I can't speak to equivalencies. You'll find it referenced many times on various parts needing lubricated in the FSM.

Yah. They installed without a problem. Drives fine. No more clunk when rolling side to side. I’ve only driven it around town but, from what I’ve been able to tell there’s no issues.

 

Energy Suspension apparently doesn't make sway bar bushings for my 2006 RCLB, which has the 27 mm bar. I used their 8.5118R bushings which are 1/8" too narrow. That made it hard to get the caps back on. I employed most of my repertoire of exotic language and pushed them on with a bottle jack. They look fine installed and work perfectly now. Best of all, the front end clunk that has been annoying me for over 150K miles is gone! I was unable to detect any slack in the original bushings but I guess just a few thousandths of movement is enough to make noise.

 

@w666 ... W666....how are your OEM sway bar bushings holding up? Also...do you know the part # used and are you running a bigger bar (26.5-28mm? Trying to track down which sway bar I have.

@w666 A couple of quick questions. 1) Do you remember how you got your part #? 2) Have you measured your Swaybar? If so, what is the diameter? We're running the same LBJs and bolts so thought our trucks might be the same.

Anyone ever seen a part# stamped or labelled on these swaybar?

I've read numerous posts that reference larger sway bars (27-28mm) and smaller SBs (23-24mm). @des2mtn (27mm DC) even references the smaller AC bushings while @Dook55 mentioned his 27mm bushings on an 06 RCLB in earlier posts. Based on a review of aftermarket bushings, it appears that 5 sizes are offered in 23, 24, 26.5, 27, and 28mm diameters for 1st Gen Tundras & Sequoias. Toyota and their parts departments, of course, can tell us nothing about the bar and bushing sizes.

What I know is that I have a bigger bar, either 27 or 28mm depending on where I measure with calipers. It's awkward positioning to read the caliper while measuring from underneath. My biggest wrench is 26mm and it didn't seem close when trying to slip it over the SB a few months ago.

I've talked to 2 different parts departments who have steered me toward the ****AF021 SB and bushings under the assumption that the larger SB would be included the Off-Road package. However, my truck did not come with Bilsteins which are part of that pkg. To make matters worse, Siberian cross-references their 26.5 mm bushings to the ****AF040 part numbers and their 24 mm bushings to the TMC ****AF021 SB & bushes. Argh!!!

Depending on which sites I search on, there are up to 3 sway bars and bushes that "fit or exact fit" my 04 AC...lol...using the VIN. I spent a good chunk of the afternoon putting together a spreadsheet with fitment notes but don't have in front of me now. Pretty confusing since the different bushing fitments that presumably correspond to the sway bar part #s seem to vary somewhat from the SB fitment.

Note: 1 & 3 below show up on the Toyota Autoparts and Amyama (EPC-Data) sites but not #2. A separate yr-make-model-frame (40L ARSSKA) search on Autoparts for Item 2 yields a "may not fit", but that site has not proven reliable on things like LBJ #s for my 04.
