Mine clearly has signs of petrol-based soakage.

My concern was whether or not it was leaking at the seal between the rack and boot (right of the clip in your pic) or out of what looked like a ruffle/tear in it.

I mean, you should probably replace the bellow, it's there to keep outside stuff out, and inside stuff in, so holes are no bueno. If you're replacing anyway, you can clean it out after T2S anyway.

Don't take my word as truth, though. Get input from others to form your opinion. I haven't been to T2S so I have no idea how rigorous travel is there.

Well the steering rack is probably something I should think about replacing anyways. They were on backorder when I checked last week. I just don't want it to completely fail on me like it did for @speedtre when he was driving cross country.

I'm going to assume it will be fine for now and just keep an eye on the fluid level as I drive.

Try replacing the bellow. Unbolt tie rod end, count spins off, remove and replace bellow, spin on tie rod same spins, reattach tie rod and you’re good to go!

drill driver set crapped out on (thanks makita) so I replaced them with the Milwaukee M18 set, and then got a little impulsive and grabbed the 1/2” impact wrench and 3/8” right angle impact M12. Planning to do the valve cover gaskets and cam seals this weekend. Sadly the suspension stuff will have to wait until the oil leak is fixed…maybe Black Friday.

Let us know how the right angle impact does. I was interested myself in that. All the reviews tell me it just doesn’t have enough power to be useful. I was hoping Dewalt would try and beat it myself upping the ft-lbs.

Gonna try energy poly body mounts but they don’t make plates big enough for DC, so…

Paint mark the inner and outer threads so you can line it back up on install. Just draw a line across the threads, nut and onto the outer.

I did the same, got rid of 2 DeWalt items and ended up with 10 Milwaukee lol.

    I haven't got the big boi 2767 (1400lbs) just the mid torque 2962 (650lbs). 1st time I used it I split a 19mm socket.

My most used item though is a modded 3453. Normally it's a 1/4" hex impact driver but I put a 3/8" square drive anvil in it. Pulls most lug nuts and suspension bolts.

    PXL_20221122_081640880.jpg

    Sold both my m12 3/8 & 1/2 stubby impacts.

It would be nice if someone made an aftermarket electric steering rack for our trucks that would allow us to get rid of leaky hydraulic lines, hydraulic steering racks and noisy power steering pumps with failing bearings.

It would solve all 3 issues for me.

Rust seems to be a contributor to 2 of the 3 issues plus the new hydraulic racks can sometimes start to leak after an alignment I’ve noticed. I’m not sure if that’s just a poorly built rack or an abusive tech or a little of both.

Formula 1 cars have LED butt plugs. This should be acceptable, especially in Washington where I swear we have the worst drivers and tons of accidents from rain.

I don’t feel a difference and it lasts nearly forever. You may want to add grease just as a precaution to squeaking but I haven’t noticed any lately.

I’m looking for less compression. I would really like the 90 Duro pads that energy suspension makes but the size and the hardware don’t lineup. I’m one of those guys that can make contact with the cab seam weld and my slider. mounts.

A few years back I opened the hood on our RAV4 hoping to flush the power steering fluid. I looked everywhere for the reservoir. I eventually realized there wasn't one but it took me longer than it should have.

Poly is stiff and lasts for ever, but is prone to squeaking in certain situations. Rubber is supple and absorptive, but breaks down with shock over time, and can add a little extra give in certain situations, like with steering, etc. making it feel softer.

Good example: I know a lot of guys who went with poly cab mount bushings when I was more heavily into 67-72 GM pickups. All complained about a more jarring ride when going down washboard roads, which are frequent down here.

Poly bushings aren't evil. There are situations where longevity and stiffness win. There are situations where comfort is key, or where you want to avoid rattling every fastener loose, or vibration could cause other damage.

If people are running around with solid engine mounts, solid body mounts, a poly mount would be a great midway between rubber and solid. I'm not sure I'd personally use it for cab/body mounts for comfort's sake, but I'd totally use it for engine mounts, anything suspension related, just for the sheer comfort component.

Counterpoint, having recently replaced my body mounts in my ‘16.

If your suspension is dialed in, the poly mounts make it feel more connected. Maybe I overspent on suspension and for sure I haven’t used it anywhere near it’s limits but I’d say I subjectively prefer the new to the old.

Correct me if I'm wrong but based and my recollection of the pics you have posted of your truck previously, isn't the rust the only thing holding your truck together?

That’s a misconception. It’s still structurally sound. As long as I don’t get into an accident, I’m fine.

That's the biggest perk: Less "give", so more responsive.

If you have a rack and pinion, rubber can feel like an old school rag joint when it starts to give and break down. Moving to poly will sharpen it right back up again.

The complaint I hear, and what I've experienced at least once/twice, is sometimes poly makes steering feel twitchy or jerky because it's too damn responsive with poly.

Thing is, I've never installed poly on a Toyota. I can't speak to that. But the question was posed: Pros and Cons. The above is my experience across the cars I've owned.

Your experience with the later-model Taco is probably way more valuable than my overly-generic multi-car input.
