Tundra or Defender?

When I went, we were in a land cruiser. There were old defenders as well, but most places I have been when people needed tough vehicles it was a Toyota

 

Truly a fantastic vehicle. But like the old Jaguar's, just buy two. One will always be in the shop.

 

Go look up Edmunds or really any other site. They’re known for far more issues than just infotainment.

With that said, it’s obvious you’re trying to justify it, so…go buy one if that’s what you want. Just have a plan when it fails you.

 

I feel like this is MSRP listing on site but when you call it will be 10k Markup. Haven't looked at prices for awhile so not sure how rampant markup is or if this dealer did it at all. Either way I feel like OP has already made a decision post mostly seem like complaints about new tundra and drooling over the defender. Like most have said this is apple and oranges and its your money buy what makes you happy.

 

I haven’t made a decision. I’m not convinced the new Tundra is any more reliable than the Defender. In the month I’ve been in market there’s been two recalls. On top of that the Tundra Pro has no front tow hooks, a cheap interior and piped in sound. I don’t like the digibro camo on the flares and seats either. I love how the new Tundra drives tho and it performs well off-road. The 2021 Defenders I’m looking at from dealer have 3 year unlimited mile warranties.

I’ve driven land rovers (and land cruisers) all over sub-Saharan Africa. The Defender is probably their best build yet. Ive owned discovery’s and range rovers and had minimal issues w them. The 2021 4Runner I had until three months ago was in the dealer being fixed four times in two years for weeks at a time. Including a rear side window that blew out twice for no reason and a front tss sensor that needed to be re-calibrated every month or so. On top of that the clock never worked and would just put up random numbers and times every time it started and the dealer never could fix it even swapping clocks etc. So my history w new Toyotas wasn’t all that great. Certainly not enough to convince me Toyotas we’re the reliable indestructible forces of nature that everyone claims.

 

That Dashboard Light graphic I shared (which is current, lol) where Land Rover ranks well behind the industry average is based only on drivetrain issues. No electrical, infotainment, or fit/finish issues count toward their score.

Toyota would have to shit the bed in an unprecedented, colossal way in order to come close to LR reliability. There are some issues, sure; but they don’t seem as widespread as some Chicken Littles are saying. If no tow hooks and cheap interior plastics bother you, Lexus makes a great and extremely capable SUV as well.

To me, a truck is a tool. (I know it doesn’t seem that way these days). If I needed a truck, I’d be in a truck. End of story.

I’ve come to the conclusion that this entire page is a ruse. First, to compare Range Rover products with Toyota in itself is comical but the OP’s responses are somewhat baiting. Anyone that chooses to purchase a Range Rover product refuses all research and please contact about 40 acres I have for sale downslope of the Kilauea volcano.

 

I mean, I'm struggling to disagree with you. The reliability of the 2022+ was mentioned. While I myself don't disagree that the 2022+ rollout is disastrous with respect to Toyota's vaunted reliability reputation....I'd STILL far rather bet on Toyota than Land Rover any day of the week. If features + proximity to an LR dealership are high on the list, Toyota should never be considered anyways. lol

 

Yeh my buddy had the new defender, got rid of it after a year and multiple times in the shop….not saying they are all like that but isnt there some history of these not being the most reliable?

You sound butt hurt. Comparing a TRD Pro Tundra set up for off road use with a bedrack or topper on it it to a capable Defender is perfectly reasonable. Both have 6cyl hybrid turbo engines. Both tout their suspensions. Get over it.

 

The three 2021 Defenders I’m looking at are authorized resellers and come w 3 year unlimited mile warranty. Between 70-75k.

 

I tend to agree with the poster. You have discounted and discredited every argument against the LR, but continue to ask the forum to change your mind. It sounds like your mind is already made up. Just buy the LC, deal with whatever consequences it may have and move on. Maybe go to a LC forum and ask the same question. You may get the affirmation you are looking for.

 

I agree w/ the fixer guy. You obviously are getting the Defender, why even come on here and defend your choice for 4 pages. I am trying to figure out why I kept reading. Just get what you want...obviously the Defender, and be done w/ it. You aren't comparing anything, you are just trying to talk yourself into getting the Land Rover.

 

Hey, it’s your life, go buy you want and enjoy it. At the end of the day you can do what you please. There’s probably no need to antagonize the people on this forum any further though.

 

Who are we all kidding. Everyone is in here for the same reason. This is entertainment for everyone but the OP, for him its real life. Get the Defender, maybe yours is trouble free, some probably are, many are not. Roll of the dice. Everyone’s opinion is just that and we all shouldn’t really care what you do with your money. Defenders do have great resale values so if you don’t like it you won’t take a bath.

 

Yes. At least as of a year ago. The numbers of vehicles inspected continues to climb. I’ve been watching the full size truck segment fairly regularly. There are also blog posts from 2020, which is a few years ago. The appearance of the site is dated, for sure.

They inspect used vehicles through fleet companies and service centers all over the nation. Admittedly, their data makes more sense and is more accurate for vehicles that have been on the road for a few years. They’re not giving new vehicle reliability ratings (which, frankly, make no sense to me).

 

Totally off topic but, ever since seeing the new defender for the first time, I can't shake the feeling that it looks like a space ship escape pod. The flat back looks like it should be docked in the mothership.

Look I was hoping you guys could defend the 23 Tundra a little bit better. No one has. I get it you don’t like the Defender. Blah blah. But at least be able to back up your truck. No one here has made a good argument for the 23 Tundra. I’m out. ✌

Do the rear seats fold completely flat? Do the head rests have to be removed or do they fold under?

 

Most your complaints about the pro are an easy fix other then reliability issues which no one can answer for you considering it's year two on new platform. Don't like the camo trim and price hike. Get a loaded platinum or limited save a ton and upgrade the suspension. Get a cbi covert bumper with tow hooks. Buy an obd programmer for $30 turn off the piped in v8. You can get a 10 year warranty as well. All this and still be less then a Pro.

I still feel your mind is already made up.

 

IF you ar looking a SUV for the farm that is going to be reliable, looks at the LEXUS GX. Great off road, top reliability. I looked at the land rover for a while before buying my wife's Lexus. I did love the interior and look af the land rover, It always came down to the reliability.
