I recently bought a 2000 Tundra 4.7L. Once I got it home it had a noise that I guessed was a loose serpentine belt, and it did have more than an inch of slop up and down. I bought a new belt and ordered a tool to turn the belt tensioner, it arrived today. Before I got the belt I started the engine, it immediately had a sound like It had previously, but it was much louder, and after about 15 seconds of this, the engine stopped running. I looked under the hood and the belt was still intact. I tried restarting it and all I heard was the starter. A friend cranked the motor over while I watched and the serpentine belt was turning. I'm an old school small block Chevy guy, I have know idea what is wrong here. Any ideas?

Bummer. You may have just learned the difference between a timing chain (Chevy), and a timing belt.

Damn. That would suck if it’s the timing belt.

I wouldnt think the timing belt would squeal.

do all the pulleys on the serpentine belt spin? A locked up a/c compressor might be able to keep the engine from running.

Yeah, all the pully's turn. It looks like it's the timing belt. I watched a video on replacing it, that's way out of my wheel house. I wonder how much parts and labor would be to do the job?

Good chance that old school small block knowledge might come in handy.
My first thought is to remove cam covers and check not only belt but timing marks.
Folks can get you there if need be with youtubes and factory service manual.

edit….appears you’re headed in right direction. As for prices, it will bary according if it’s dealer work or local yocal with you perhaps providing need kit.
Are you wanting to keep it ?

I saw a video on checking the cam belt by partially removing the passenger side timing belt cover to get a look.

Just hope it didn't skip a couple of belt teeth, its an interference engine. Like a bent valve jammed into a piston. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

If a valve was jammed into a piston, the prank pully wouldn't turn right?

Compression test will tell if it just bent a valve.

Just a bent valve? You make it sound like that is the lesser of the two evils.

Just because the engine suddenly died doesn't necessarily mean anything catastrophic happened. It really needs further diagnoses, it might not even be the timing belt IMO.

From where the truck sits now at home, do you have suggestions that I could look into?

Describe the noise you heard. Was it a squeal?
Or a high pitch howl? Any warbling or was it steady?

No squeal, jus a tic tic tic sound that was in cadence. Now today when I started it, the sound was louder, more like a clunk clunk sound.

Ok, i've never heard a belt tick. But while listening it seems to be coming from the front of the engine? The injectors on these engine have a noticable light tick. But not a clunk. How long have you had the truck? Oil clean & full? Wouldnt hurt to check the sparkplugs, too.

3 weeks. clean oil. I never heard a sound under the hood until day 2, it is coming from the front of the engine, that's why I thought serpentine belt.

The belt tensioner on my moms sequoia would chirp with the belt on, but felt/sounded gritty when i took the belt off to replace it, noticeable play, too. Pull the belt off and check the fan pulley, too make sure the fan isnt hitting the shroud. But none of that would stop it from running...hmmm

1 clunk per rev? Less? More?

Did you get any of the service history from the person that you bought it from? Also, any check engine light?

Pull the black cam covers and have a look. If you don’t know the history or it’s been 100k you’re on borrowed time with the belt. Check belt condition and timing marks on cams. 2000 doesn’t have VVT so belt change is easier than later models. Also see if you have any codes with a scanner. Post some photos and we can offer help.

It's got 133K, and the check engine light came on the same time the noise started. and yes, I should have bought a scanner by now. Tomorrow I will pull back the cam covers, that will reveal a lot from what I've been hearing. No service history except tires and battery receipts.

That's a great starting point, hopefully when you pull the codes, that will give us a better idea on what's going on.

It does sound like it may have slipped some teeth on the timing belt, that clunk clunk sound could be a piston whacking a valve.

Had my Timing Belt Service performed in February this year at my local Toyota Dealer. This was the third time. The first was at 89K, the second at 176K and this one at 260K.

There's a cover on the passenger side that has three 10mm fasteners. Removing those enabled me to pry the cover back enough to see the belt. The belt looked good but when I touched it with a screwdriver, it moved freely, like if I could get my fingers in there I could have pulled the belt out, if you know what I mean. So I think that pretty much nailed the diagnosis. I'd like to thank you all for the help.

Bad tensioner? Hopefully no damage to the engine.

I hope the clunking sound is maybe the tensioner flopping around? Trying to be optimistic here. Last time I had a timing belt tensioner fail on one of my vehicles, I had to buy the new engine heads.
