Maintenance Trickle charger on 3rd gen Hybrid

I know there should be a simple explanation for this, but I can't find it.

I have a 2023 1794 hybrid. I am going to be out of the country for a several months and want to put a battery maintainer on the starting battery. Given its under the rear seat, I would have thought there is a way to attach under the hood. Is the only way to leave a window down, or close the door on the cable to attach a trickle charger?

I thought about using the 12v ports, but on my Porsche, those get turned off and can't be used for maintenance charging.

Anyone got a solution to mount a quick disconnect for a Noco or other type maintainer?

And I assume the hybrid battery just runs down and charges again once the vehicle starts?

 

all you need is to trickle charge the 12v battery so the ecu has power to start from the 288v battery pack. the 288v battery pack wont start the truck if the 12v ecu battery is dead as stated in another thread.

do not attemp to trickle charge the 288v battery pack.

 

There should be leads under the hood, check owners manual. Had to boost a rav hybrid with backseat battery and connections were under the hood.

 

wanted to add, the hybrid motor has no alternator or starter, the 288v battery pack replaces those. but the battery pack wont engage without a command signal from the ecu which runs off the 12v battery.

i went away on a 3 week work trip, i just disconnected my battery. easier than doing a battery tender.

 

Ya, wasn't going to do that, just want to maintain he 12v system.

 

I looked, there is only a positive post for jumping, no negative. And don't really want to run to under seat through door.

 

Any chassis ground should work.

 

For jumpstarting, I agree that a chassis ground is fine. For maintenance charging, I was always led to believe you need the negative post of the battery. At least that is what all the manuals I have read state.

 

well technically if you are jumping a battery or connecting to a battery you are suppose to use a ground away the battery to reduce the chance of igniting the hydrogen gas off by sparking when connecting the negative/ground cable.

not sure how that works now with sealed batteries so to speak.

If your truck has any kind of hall effect or current sensor associated with the 12V battery then this is not true. Your negative has to be on the opposite side of the sensor than the battery in order for the BCM to detect that the battery is receiving current.

At least on other vehicles I've had, I used the nearest ground to the battery for the negative side of the charger.

 

I'd hook up the charger directly to the battery. I'd use a smaller extension cord and close the door over it.

If you're looking for quick connect because you'll need to do this often and don't want to mess around with the battery compartment, you could install a charger in the battery compartment and then install one of these through the plastic seat riser. Might be able to get this under the truck somehow too, then pass-through to the battery compartment.

You can def jump from under the hood, but can you trickle charge there?

 

Have you installed this? It's a good idea but I'm curious as to where you would put it as there seems to be double layer plastic all around the riser.

 

Anyone do this? Would be interested to hide a trickle charger permanently near the battery and have a quick plug in.

 

I have that NOCO plug. I used a hole saw and drilled through the lower valence and zip tied the plug and cable in front of the radiator.

 

Hi all,
I recently had to give boost to someone as their battery was dead. I tried following the manual, but couldn't find the point for Negative clamp. I ended up hooking the cables to under the seat battery directly. Can anyone point out with an actual picture where is the neutral clamping point in 2024 Tundra Hybrid?. The one the highlight as "D".

I also want to use it to hook a battery maintainer to it.
