I hope to meet Raina one day. She seems like quite the character. And her brindle is so pretty in the sun. :)

Been in a drought for years, so I don't expect one good winter to break it. I'd be ok with a slower warm up so we don't just melt it all and send it down the pipe to the idiots in NV and CA that water golf courses year round. I swear, we should either be getting rich off it or not sending it to people that don't realize deserts are dry.

Well, after 2-3 days of freezing temps and a brutal snowfall here on the coast :D , someone has managed to find some sunshine hanging around.... My oldest sitting on their sofa (wife bought a small Ikea sectional just for the dogs):

It's not just golf courses creating the problem... Several years ago a study was (of course) of found that when the first heavy rains and snowfalls of the season hits in CA the heavy flow of water traps some species of baby (I think Salmon) in the damn and they end up dying. So, to combat the problem, they end up not trapping the water and allow nearly 90-95% of the that heavy rain/snowfall to dump into the ocean instead of sending it through the aqueducts to the farms, etc... I get the whole eco system is important, but when you are telling your residents you're in a drought for the last how ever many years and there isn't enough water for residential areas or farmland, I'd think priorities would prevail :notsure:

Golf courses was a generality. I was more referring to the fact that people don't adapt their lifestyles to the natural environment. Everybody wants a green lawn and they are in a desert. Vegas has huge fountains. There's no concern for water conservation as a matter of general practice. People get addicted to lifestyle and aren't willing to compromise, even if it costs them in the long run.

Not completely true... many of the 'water features' in Vegas are mitigated or suspended at times of drought, and numerous HOAs and municipalities have restrictions on fountains, misters, etc. during certain seasons, years or times when water is scarce

Unless of course you are a HNW or UHNW individual... in that case there are exceptions

Don't know what HNW or UHNW is, but my point is that conservation of water in those areas should be common practice rather than something imposed after you are already in trouble.

So - one thing about the Vegas fountains (and in no way am I saying that this is an excuse or acceptable reason to not actually adapt lifestyle that is aligned with the natural environment) - most of those "fountains" are actually used as the evaporative cooling tower for their central utility plants. Rather than uglifying the place with a shit-ton of these (that are hard to hide and take up a lot of space), they instead pump their condenser water through fountains and waterfalls to achieve the same effect with a cleaner look (and actually a decent energy savings as well).

True, and they do use recycled water for others. Again, I was using golf courses and fountains because of the easily visualized water usage. I agree that it is a more complex thing than that.

Similar waste of water. That is a luxury item that shouldn't get water until actual needs are met. Should we buy truck parts, video games, and go out to the movies before we pay the utilities and get groceries? No, but that doesn't stop people addicted to a lifestyle from making poor choices. That's all well and good if they just suffer the consequences, but they don't. They whine and snivel that they're picked on and it's the world's fault that they have problems.

That's no different than someone who applies for state/govt aid to help w/their 'needs', but can spend money on tats, traveling, $6 coffee, weed, alcohol, and a new macbook pro.
