I will have to say I had a 06 Honda Odyssey that I bought new. v6 engine (with cylinder deacivation) ran great.
Everything else around it sucked. Transmission was having issues, special motor mounts (8-900.00 each x 2) ouch.

Can a guy get some kind of compensation for diminished value in a situation like this? I know if I was buying used and this showed up on the service report I'd walk away.

    I doubt it.
Truck has warranty, and manufacturer fulfilled their obligations by honoring that warranty. This is it.

It'll probably be trade in to dealer anyway, and the trade in value won't be impacted by this "event".

Hi Op, sorry to hear your story and thank you for sharing with all of us.

You have time... See how the truck feels after this service. If all drives fine, and no sounds or rattles or noises then truck will probably be just fine. Push Toyota corporate to give you free 10 years warranty for this event to help with your very vocal social media posts, which Toyota doesn't want...

If you won't like the truck after this incident, then you may have to trade it in etc..

I'd consider the move to another vehicle if available....

I mean going to a nice trim is cool.... I'd look into what the price differential would be. Maybe they are willing to do the deal at invoice... (Lemon laws can easily apply. They know it)
You basically got a free ride for 34k miles.

If this is financed and you dont want to rock the boat too much.... Get it fixed and press on for an extended warranty.
I doubt they'll give you much fuss about it.

Another update this morning. I guess Toyota will not be putting a new engine in and is having the remote dealer do a full rebuild instead. Timeframe is still 6-8 weeks because of the lead time on some of the parts. This wasn’t what was initially communicated to me, so not sure what changed.

I think it's been pretty well established that Toyota hasn't sent complete new crate motors for quite awhile. They only send new long blocks and transfer over the accessories. Someone can confirm but I think this has been practice for years.

What on Earth makes Toyota think rebuilding an oil-starved engine is cheaper than putting in a new one? What they have to replace, on top of my head:

    - crankshaft
    - all 4 camshafts
    - all the bearings
    - both turbos
    - may be both cylinder heads

Will they warranty that? For how long?

But this is what is called "a new engine". When you buy one for non-Toyota vehicle, you have to transfer alternator, PS pump, manifolds, throttle, etc, etc.

I would venture to say that the average layperson (not saying the OP is one) would interpret a service manager saying "new engine" to be a entire new crate motor. 95% of folks out wouldn't know the difference between a long block or a short block, etc.

Unless the OP got it in writing, the term "new engine" is fairly subjective to the average person.

Right. In general, I would not trust a dealer rebuilding my engine. I wasn't trusting myself for rebuilding the engine for about two years, I only let it go a few weeks ago and finally agreed it may actually last for a while ;)

I think it depends on the dealer. An established dealer with a good a service department is going to have a few ASE Certified Master Techs on staff. If they've got any time in certification at all, then I would trust them. This is of course I either 1) had an extended warranty already or 2) Toyota gave me an extended warranty to ease my mind about the rebuilt engine.

That being said, I think one of my biggest concerns would be the fit & finish once everything was put back together. Panel gaps, creaks, squeaks, etc.

Yeah, that’s my main concern tbh. I am leaning towards trading it out once I get it back.

I'd drive the living crap out of it till 35K miles, then trade.
You're losing $$ on the trade regardless, might as well extract as much value out of the process as you can.

How is he going to come out ahead trading in a vehicle with more miles? That doesn't make any sense.

For warranty covered engine replacements, Generally a new long block is sent and all of the accessories are moved over if they show no defects.

The ticket for this replacement is no longer with my team, so I can't see the details, but i'm guessing the identified failure was something that didn't require a new engine and the rebuild was the better option. At a minimum, the bearings and valve springs/retainers will be replaced. No need to replace valves or camshafts unless the failure was identified there. The turbos will probably be taken out of the housings to inspect the bearings, but unlikely they'll need to be replaced. Engineers smarter than I have probably come up with a plan for this, as well as a series of check-ins with OP after they get the truck back to keep an eye on it.

For all engine rebuilds that HQ has a hand in, there's usually an engineer that goes out and checks every nut and bolt once the rebuild is close to complete.

As for warranty, i'm not sure what happens, the ticket gets passed to another team for that.

We got any lawyers in this forum or thread. Maybe they can provide so advice to OP how to recover his losses and be made whole. I feel at the very least the new engine should come directly from Toyotas assembly line, even from Japan Lexus…. Maybe I’m going too far. But this is a huge inconvenience for OP.

A rebuilt engine on flat rate is not something I would look forward to receiving at least not without an extended warranty.

OEMs are notorious for paying peanuts for warranty work. So big jobs like engine rebuilds or tranny replacements can be real money losers for the dealers that may impact their motivation. I had one of the die every 30k Honda 5 speeds 20 years ago. The service manager told me Honda paid a flat rate that was less than his cost. And he was doing a tranny replacement a day.

From my experience with a Buy-Back from one of the big three. Never lost my cool-always calm and respectful. Documented every conversation; Date, time and with whom speaking with and position. After 6 weeks, we together landed that they already had a substantial amount of labor invested without finding the electrical issue. They pretty much took the car apart tracing all electrical lines and sources. Even if they did finally isolate the issue and repair, the repaired car would never be normal again.

They made good on it, was given an excellent price with all upgrades included and they found an upgraded car for me at dealer cost. The car with the issue was just a year old and had maybe 4000 miles on it and I owned it. Of course, was required to agree to and sign NDA for this to happen-thus the generalization of this post.

Hope it works out for you.

This information is completely wrong!! Toyota never does “long blocks” except in very rare case’s (some Camrys with wrong pistons installed, recalled). They have part listing but good luck getting one. Toyota has always done short blocks (block, crank, rods, pistons, bearings assembled) and non assembled heads. Of course they do individual parts too if that’s all that is needed. And why the hell would springs and retainers be changed? Camshafts would seize in the head before a spring failed from oil starvation.

and in all my years, no one has come out to inspect any engine that has had a major repair or rebuild at my dealership. Maybe a different in a different area? Never heard of any of this.
