Even if it's 10 blown engines — from the already 100,000 trucks sold — a .0001 per-cent failure rate is still a yawn at this point.

It absolutely is and quite frankly, expected. But if they all have pretty much the same failure, it’s still kind of acceptable but the question is, was it limited to a particular run of engines? If so great, a few trucks will get new engines and it will be done. I’m just hoping it’s not a real issue that will become more common and unpredictable. Hopefully that’s not the case and we don’t hear of anymore of these. Remember, yes the engine has been in Lexus since 2017 but total sales of all those years is less than the first year of new tundra sales, and in a completely different platform and purpose. Just slightly concerned and offering an option. And honestly I wouldn’t care if I thought the truck was a pos, but I don’t, it’s had a rocky start but I’m a huge fan of the new generation and it’s painful to see some of these issues.

That was the point of my complaint. They rigged a biased test to push their agenda of making big corporations look bad at every opportunity.

Huh? I’m pretty sure the V35A block is cast at Toyota Bodine in Tennessee and the assembled in Alabama.

Everyone else said it already but I want to add that there isn’t more power than rated, just less power is pulled back due to spark retard.

Are you trying to argue that big corporations don’t have a biased agenda? Asking for a friend

Unsure where you keep drawing these absurd statements from. I’d much rather move to Canada where I’d lose all my firearms, but live in a “peaceful” society that has a history of restricting the rights of it’s citizens. See, I too, can make IQ deficient statements.

Had my oil cooler leaking engine coolant at 1500 miles on the ODO. Probably leaked from day one. I was told during engine assembly an o-ring was pinched which resulted in the very small leak (at least from an external perspective). Now the interesting part.. I only noticed the leak because I was doing my first oil change (early) to make sure any break-in contaminates were removed and get some fresh oil in there. Noticed the oil had a very slight milkshake tint, which of course is almost always caused by either heavy fuel or coolant dilution. I should have set the oil aside for a couple days and let it separate out, so I could see if there was indeed coolant present, and if so how much. I'll never know and they swore there wasn't any contamination, but I'm not entirely sure about that. I have had quite a few Toyota's but this one has me on the edge of my seat. Love the truck, but at the same time the build quality just isn't what it once was. About the only thing that keeps me at ease is I bought the truck CPO so it came with the 100k warranty. Oh, and now the rear main seal is weeping.. o_O

You'll never hear the cause on a warrantied engine. They just get shipped back in the crate the replacement came in without any dissection taking place.

I don't think people should hate on the Turbos, even though my personal preference is to avoid turbocharging.

Depends on the dealer. We have full reports on torn down engines that dealers and techs can access for their tickets, but most never do.

Thats exactly the problem these days.... The trucks have gotten more widgets in them in the name of safety, fuel economy etc.
The more moving parts, the more chance for failure.

Personally I would have been very happy to have the 8 cylinder motor in the new tundra... But because of certain standards you get better MPG from a smaller motor with turbos. In the end, just more things to go wrong down the road.

GM managed to get better MPG with bigger V8. How? More gears in transmission, so the engine does not need to rev much, plus cylinders deactivation. AFM in GMs implementation, of course, sucks, but in general is the right thing to do.

Is there any engine with cylinder deactivation that has proven reliable?

I don't know. I had enough small displacement turbo engines in my life, even Toyota can't convince me it managed to make them reliable. I prefer to spend a bit more on gas over years and have zero turbo-related problems.

Same here. I do have one car with a turbo and it's there for power not economy. It does an amazing job of turning 93 octane fuel into pure fun and Brembo brake dust.

Same. I keep one that is from cars era and is fun to drive. Not a subscription-based soap box with iPad, plastic engine parts and twice the HP, but only on paper, like you get these days.

Remote dealer just sent me this! Kind of crazy seeing it apart like that! They estimate 6-8 weeks to receive the new motor and get everything installed and put back together and then are going to work on transporting it up here. I believe they are sending the failed engine to Toyota R&D. The Field Service Tech indicated that they have had 4-5 similar failures in the region, but this was only the second one that had the water penetration that led to the bearing failure, according to what I was told.

One of the reasons I still keep my old true-Swedish Volvo is that I was able to do a full engine rebuild with the engine block still sitting in engine bay, including rehoning the cylinder sleeves....

    Man that is rough OP.

6-8 weeks for a new engine? Yikes.

That is well beyond most states Lemon Law period if you no longer trust or want that truck.

I’m kind of on the fence about it, but I guess I have some time to think about it since I couldn’t do anything before it’s repaired. Based on suggestions by other members my local dealer is going to push Toyota to give me an extended warranty. My local dealer also said that they would try and work me a deal to help out, considering the circumstances, to get me out of it and into something else. Only issue is right now they only have Platinums and 1794s in stock (haven’t checked what’s in the pipeline yet) so price is considerably more (and features I don’t really need/use). I’m also exploring other alternatives as well, just to keep the options open. I know that statistically this most likely won’t occur again, but it has left an unsettling feeling, as of now, regarding longer trips out of state.

Might be a tad exaggerated but it's more common than it should be. This forum is a tiny sample size so to have 2-3 members already experience blown engines isn't great.

I spend most of my time in the 1st gen section and I've been a member here since 2018. I can honestly say there have been more members report a blown engines on their 3rd gens than our 20 year old 1st gens. In fact, the only ones I can remember were people that hydrolocked or didn't replace their timing belt.

appreciate you posting this information for us.
    fwiw another opinion.
you told us your Tundra was a pavement princess and this happened.
Its a totally new truck with little dealer repair experience.
How do you expect any dealer to put this back together properly and feel good about it long term.
I can't say put it back together like factory 8^0 can I ?
Even with warranty - I hate going back to the dealer for anything.
The whole idea behind a Tundra is you are not on a first name basis with the service manager.
    That's my idea anyway.
If I am you I asking for a loaner till they get an allocation for another Tundra you are willing to take.
    or get your money back.
    jmo and good luck.

Sounds like you’re working with two pretty good dealers. Were they able to find where the water/coolant intrusion came from? Personally I would be hesitant to keep the truck if that wasn’t pinpointed and possibly cause another issue down the road.
