    LOL, can’t stand Toyota.

I’m about to go get in a Toyota I’ve been driving for well over 15 years and go to work.

I guess I’m just pissed that I waited this long for a new Tundra to come out and it’s so mediocre in almost every way.

Even then, realistically who really hard cores a 75-80k dollar truck? Ok..some do.

If you want a do all (tow, haul, off-road) a person will look for a F350 Tremor and choose what motor to deal with (7.3 vs 6.7 diesel).

I'd like to pick your brain on what you might consider if your truck was stolen tonight and had to replace it. Would it be a 1/2 ton or would you step up a notch?

At this point I would strongly consider stepping up a notch just to avoid all the stupid shit done by manufacturers to avoid running afoul of CAFE standards.

All the 1/2 tons on the market have significant functional, or durability deficiencies that would have to be remedied to keep one long term and meet my needs and wants.

Later this year after I hit some financial goals the test drives and selection process will begin. I’ll hopefully drive a Tundra as part of the process.

Take your finger and place a load on the front fender of an aluminum F150 and watch the deflection. It’s absurd. Then look for prevalent frame rust. Especially the rear diff and axle. Then note how none of the doors align with the truck . 8 years and the shit still doesn’t align right. Aluminum is garbage for a truck skin. Vibrates like shit. Cam phasers good luck.

GM wax coated frames. Come on. GM can’t make a lifter to save its fore skin . Junk.

Ram ehhhh. Front end issues and the metal is total garbage.

I don’t think you understand the challenges this poor soul has had to face. The first dealer he went to had one with a bad waste gate. The second was a Platinum with AVS that the dealer stopped letting people drive as the bump stops were being hit so hard people were breaking bones. Not a tech in sight had a wrench and ten minutes of time. The last one he didn’t bring hearing protection for the drivers door cabin whistle.

This truck is just an absolute tragedy. You may get stuck with a faulty side mirror. That sounds far worse than anything Ram, GMC, or Ford owners deal with.

    1. Don't own a 3rd gen myself. Nor had I any plans to buy one.

The article has a misprint. Nothing Major. It lists the tires as 16" rim diameter.

It really doesn't paint the truck in a good light. Though, Motor Trend has historically to catered to GM, because of advertising. No idea if that trend continued with the modern monetized web.

To be fair no other manufacturers have really focused on that segment until recently. But yeah, Tacoma is the market leader for sure.

I don't think it's mediocre, but I understand where you're coming from. 2nd gen blew the doors off everyone and remained relevant for 15 years. It still is IMO if you want the least BS from any new-ish, low-mileage half ton.

It just seems to me that Toyota chased the rest of the segment with this truck. So many things about it are major positives on paper that many 2nd gen owners have been waiting and waiting for, but the way it was implemented, these features fall a bit flat when you experience them. For example:
    • It has a boxed frame and rear coils. Yet it still suffers from bed bounce and a rough ride.
    • Finally, a rear locker! Whoops, gotta be in 4Lo only to use it.
    • iForce Max boasts highest torque numbers in the segment! But it's a heavy truck with electronically nannied one-wheel-peel, and it gets smoked by others if you're looking for that kind of performance.
    • More payload! But barely.
    • Better mpg! But so far, Fuelly is tracking less than 3mpg real world difference between the '21 and '22 Tundras. All these "I got 21mpg on my last highway trip" reports still don't prevent it from landing around 16.x for a tank average.

I'm glad many people really like their 3rd gens and aren't having any issues with them. Some of the issues I do see are fairly alarming, and the truck does fall just a bit flat for me after such a long wait. If Toyota doesn't offer a high payload package when it's time for me to move on, then my '21 will probably be the last half ton I own.

I swear MotorTrend might as well become a subsidiary of JD Power as much as they both seem to fawn over Chevy.

Maybe because I came from a Tacoma my perspective is limited but my 22 is great, yeah there's a couple rattles but bombing down washboard roads at 70+ mph may have caused that lol

    I bought my Tundra on a whim….

I had been shopping trucks for a while. At work I drive Chevy and Fords all day, get to drive the shut out of them. They’ve never let me down tbh. Tahoes fuel pumps have gone bad, the F-150 coyotes are pretty stout. Chevy, we’ll have one that needs new lifters or a new engine.

in addition I had been looking at several models for a long time. I had heard of Tundra's legendary bullet proof pedigree. So I said fuck it why not. Also, for me with the new style it just looks so damn sexy. I even like the interior. It’s feels more upscale than all the trucks I’ve driven, only one that I think matches it is the Ram Laramie.
To me my Tundra feels like a tank, in a good way. Glides ever so smoothly over the road. Even gets going without complaining, doesn’t even sound like it breaks a sweet. I think the power delivery is that of a diesel engine. Very torquey engine.

All the aluminum bodied f150’s ive rented and driven felt more solid than my steel body f150, and thats not to diss my F150, at 107k miles it is still in great shape with zero rattles(except my kids car seats in the back). Closing the doors on the aluminum trucks sound better and when driving the are not rattling

At least the Chevy and Fords each offer a bench seat configuration. They also offer standard cabs.

Unfortunate that Toyota wouldn't even offer that six-seating feature to loyal Tundra owners that require it.

Going with the majority market. They have such a small piece of the full size pie it is better for their bottom line to streamline the truck to appeal to the widest segment of customers with as little variation as possible.

Comparing it to the Tacoma vs 3rd gen is funny to me. Tacomas have near perfect fit and finish just a weak power train and poor shifting transmission. 3rd gen tundras have a pretty decent powertrain but the fit n finish is a notch or two below a Tacoma or especially a 4Runner. Almost like a different brand of vehicle.

It's a puff piece written by v8 diehards and people who don't truly know off-roading. Full size trucks are way too big to off-road in a meaningful way beyond what they can do stock anyway. If someone's going up a tight mountain 4x4 trail that you actually need lockers then they'll be in something smaller, narrower, and with a better turning radius such as a mid-size truck/Tacoma or a dedicated old, beat up, rock crawling rig that DOESN'T cost even a fraction of 70k. And let me tell you there's plenty of passing power in my 3rd gen. Does it need to downshift, sure but gets up and goes with no issue.
