I am passing on the one pictured above. Thanks for all the input.

It's too bad, Carfax and maintenance is very good with consistent dealer service/oil changes. But given the rust underneath and the likelihood that a lot of parts will need to be swapped because of, it may not be the one.

Transmission Question with a long intro: In 2011 I purchased a new Ram with 5.7 with an AWD mode with a price tag of $40k. I loved this truck, smooth and sounded great. I used it as my primary vehicle and also to plow my long driveway and a couple of neighbors. The AWD was awesome to plow with, none of that wheel jerk as the tires grabbed a spot.

Fast forward to 2018, I purchased a new Ford F150 5.0 without the AWD feature with a price tag of $55k. At the time, I didn't like the looks of the Ram and ended up with a Ford. I didn't pay attention to transmission and just assumed it had AWD. First time out plowing I got that jerk feeling when turning, this and several reasons is why I never liked this truck, I dumped it last week. I later found out that the only way I could have gotten the AWD in the Ford was to upgrade from the XLT to the Platimun, had I known I would have done that!

Fast forward to today....I decided I don't need to spend $50k plus for my next truck but I do want a nice truck with the right transmission.

So, to the question, still staying in the $20k + 5k if needed, are there certain models of the Tundra that have the AWD mode?

Also want to point out, the transmission matters not in this situation, it's the transfer case you seek. Transfer cases are what take the transmission output and determine how its used in 4WD and AWD systems. AWD systems have a sort of limited slip differential in them to allow full time 4WD without all of the associated binding when turning sharply. Transmission is the same between Tundras and Sequoias.

I think they do still have that differential in their T cases but I was under the impression the ability to select 2WD↔️4WD meant 4WD and not AWD. Maybe I'm mistaken.

True Toyota doesn’t call it AWD but I believe when in 4WD the Sequoia is essentially the same setup as the LandCruiser which is full-time 4WD so cornering on asphalt isn’t an issue.

    I could be wrong.

No I think you're right. Technically they say you can drive in 4WD all the time. Crazy concept imo

Im in Maine and store my trucks in the winter while I salt up my employer’s work chevy. I had my Taco shipped from Wisconsin and my Tundra shipped from Kentucky, both spotless underneath with showroom new underfluffies. Id recommend finding something from somewhere not salty (or garaged in winter, taco was by the previous owner which is why I bought it from a snow-state) and bring home to have a head-start on rust prevention. I woolwaxed mine the week I brought it home even though its yet to see salt.

@vmass, reread @Terndrerrr's post. 2.0 can swap in the Sequoia TC giving 2WD and 4WD Hi/Lo running open or locked. Requires shortening the rear prop shaft, Sequoia AWD ECU, and some simple electronics.

Right! The one above that I posted undercarriage pictures did raise concerns. After thinking about it a bit, it was just too crusty. Starting to look outside the area. Long distance shopping isn't the easiest option, as sellers can be a bit lazy when it comes to picture and information requests.

Great looking truck. Seems like a far better deal than the '12 with 75k and crusty undercarriage for 26k

The dishonest sellers tend to weed themselves out that way. If theyre too lazy to take a few pics of a frame for me then its either too far gone or theyre the type you probably dont want to deal with anyways. I had a dude take an entire day to send me a couple frame pics. Figured it out when I got em as it was obviously freshly painted over rust and I pointed out he had left the cans of black rustoleum in the background of one of the photos. Whoopsies. NEXT.

I was just going to say this. Look for a truck below the rust belt. Pull a CarFax on what ever truck you are seriously looking make sure it has a listed service history. This will tell you everywhere the truck has been serviced (if at a dealership) and also registrations and sales. This tell you what US States it has resided in. You should be able to find a much better one than that. My 2014 has been in MN salt every winter and looks no where close to as bad as that.

They shouldn’t have a problem answering your every request. Literally, every single request. If they do not then the truck is not worth your time as they have no integrity and things are probably hidden

I requested undercarriage and engine pictures on this one. Not too far away for an in person look if the pictures pass inspection. Carfax looks good, couple of head gasket replacements....is that typical for these?

Correct, I saw that. I have had a truck with a plow since 2011 (until recently ) to do my own drive way that is too large to shovel/snow blow. So, I either need a plow or I pay someone to do it. Amazingly, my driveway has not been plowed this year! Typically I would do it 10-20 times in a season.

I still have my Boss blade and controller, but that push plate looks like a different brand.
