Why are we so committed?

I don't even own my truck yet - on a wait list for my TRD Pro - but I have thus weird 'part of something g bigger than I am' vibe.
Why?
I mean, let's be honest, it's just a TRUCK. So why do I feel like I'm part of some ultra cool-kids cult?
I find myself looking for Tundras when I'm driving down the road. Couple days ago a guy with an SR5 Pro pkg was gassing up beside me and I couldn't help myself but engage in conversation.

What have you people done to me?!??!??

 

It's a Toyota thing.

It's because we're a community of like-minded individuals. My wife bought a 4Runner last April; I told her "You don't realize it yet, but you're not just buying a vehicle. You're joining a community."

She laughed at me. Maybe a month after she got her 4Runner, she said "You were right. I find myself striking up random conversations with people, looking for ideas, etc." LOL. It's the same with the Tundra.

 

So... I've joined a cult?

Ha. No. Jeeps are a cult. They drive around putting rubber ducks on other jeeps and giving each other a "jeep wave".

The real question isn't: why are we so committed? But, when will we BE committed? Like, to an institution. A Toyota asylum. Save me a room.

As the owner of a 1995 4Runner and 2011 Lexus GX, but not a diehard Toyota person, it appears very cult like looking from the outside in. I've owned Ford, GM, Jeep, Subaru, Honda, etc.

 

I buy whatever vehicle best meets my needs and within budget when I need one. 3 times that has been a Toyo, many other times something else.

 

My last Toyota was a 1973 Celica! I fixed it up and it was stolen right away.

We have been down the VW path for decades with some Honda's sprinkled in. Then we went off course with my wife's Mini (by BMW) and then our electric BMW and now back to Toyota for a Tundra. Some might think we need a good smack!

We are buying for personal use and for business use. The best purchase we made was the BMW i3 which we use for work. It has paid for itself with our stupid gas prices. The Tundra is a business vehicle when we need to haul heavy stuff so mileage will be low with minimal use other than towing our trailer. After 4 months, we have put 1,700 kms on it and that is mostly towing our trailer. It will take a long time to get to our first oil change.

I think we are excited to be beta testers again so the Tundra should fit in nicely

 

Yeah you just need to get past the overwhelming fear of being left stranded on the side of dirt road, 200 miles out in the desert every other week like you would with any other brand besides Toyota, right?

 

Or the tow hook deficient.

 

I mean, speaking for myself, I’ve had almost every other vehicle save one break down - two of them in the middle of winter, one in the middle of nowhere.

I’m not cultish about anything *BUT* reliability.

 

Thats amazing. They only time I've had vehicles break down is when I screw with them or neglect maintenance.

 

I wish I was kidding. (Oh wait - my 1999 S-10 never left me stranded. LOL)

But yeah, I've not always had the best luck. 1997 Ford Taurus; 1995 F250; 2002 Ram 1500; etc. have all left me on the side of the road at some point, and I've always been one to do the correct prescribed maintenance. *shrug*

 

With the disappointments associated with the cars/trucks of today, and you find a reliable and trusted product like Toyota, you naturally join the love-fest (insert Soylent Green here). Deep down in your subconscious, you are naturally led down the Toyota path. Enjoy the trip and bask in the realization that you have chosen well.

 

I was a Honda/Acura fan boy growing up. Def drank the Toyota kool-aid

 

LOL I got in a fight on the Tacoma Reddit board once where they all think if a guy drove a GM/Ford/Ram it would spontaneously explode at 100k , ok

I had a Tacoma, I had a Canyon. Both really good at certain things and both very enjoyable vehicles.

 

I looked for a couple of years before I bought my 2007 last August. I new from reading about the Tundra that it was the vehicle for me and I knew I wanted a second gen, so that's what I got. I bought reliability plain and simple. For me that was the hook.

 

This exacty! I only see one new Tundra in my area. Tons of other new trucks in different brands. Yes, if I see one at the pumps, I'm gonna converse! LOL

I have had a ton of turbo cars in the past so the new Tundra fit's me perfectly. When the time is right and the aftermarket support is going full steam, I plan on modding the hell out of mine.

For me it was my experience with my 2009 Tacoma. 15 years with no major problems and it never broke down and stranded me once. Not once. Something I can't say about any other vehicle, mostly various GM products. Failed HEI module, failed transmission, spun rod bearing, failed alternator, broken transmission TV cable, failed remote oil cooler hose, separated plastic radiator tank, A/C black death, failed Optispark distributor, some others.

 

I test drove a Ram 1500 Bighorn, Ford F150 XLT, GMC Sierra, and the Tundra yesterday, all back to back. The Tundra was just a better experience. The only one that comes close is the Ford F150 in my opinion. I was committed to Tundra before, but wanted to get a more objective view point before signing papers. It only re-affirms my commitment. I think I would be happy with the F150 or Tundra, but I would go out of my way to get a Tundra. I would only get a Ford if it was convenient for me, but can’t explain why I feel this way.

 

GM/Ford, not so much.

Ram? Up till recently I'd have said it wouldn't take that long. I owned an '02 Ram, and after the *SEVENTEENTH* time in the shop in a year and a half I was done at 54K.

 

I have bought some rubber frogs off of Amazon. I am starting to place them on Toyota's that I have judged to be "cool" (Mostly all of them). No note no explanation on why they have a rubber frog on their door handle.
