VF Tuning / OV Tune - revived thread

If you already have VFT and know your ECU ID, you can buy a vin locked file from Overland Torque Tune by OTT directly. Let me know and I’ll email John to give him e heads up. You’ll have to pay for the tune file itself since he does all the magic.

 

So pay someone else to tune my truck I already had tuned but not completed? I do not throw money around like that, just wanted to get what I originally paid for. Way back when I bought it was way before he started the do it yourself approach.

I've done some tweaking on my Direct Shift and Gear Lock features. My truck happens to be one of the weird ones that the GL and DS features wound not work properly as VF Tuner designed it for all other trucks.

So go to Primary Shifting 8. ( 4x2 S mode) 4x4 S mode has different table.

On the Upshift Schedule 1 to 2, under the Accelerator Angle, you'll see columns with numbers from 0 all the way to 127.998.

Go directly below that and you'll see the values. Left most side is blue and the rest green, yellow, red.

Leave the blue value alone.

Change the remaining columns' values to 0.

Do that on the rest of the Upshift 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6.

Then, go to Primary Shifting 8 Downshift Schedule and do the same thing.

Now, you'll need to be in S Mode and Tow/Haul mode to use this. Your Cruise Control may not work. I didn't care for mine. Not sure if mine works. I haven't tried it.

I recommend before you start the mod to save a copy of your current tune and label it differently.

Then, use that to put the modifications and load that on your ecu.
If it doesn't work, load the original tune back.

The low rpm limit is 1500. If it goes below, the ecu will take over and downshift the trans as it sees fit. I.E. you're coming to a stop and you didn't manually downshift. The ecu will downshift the trans all the way to 1st gear like stock.
To keep the DS and GL always engaged make sure the actual gear that the transmission is currently in matches the number displayed on the dashboard. So on the scenario above, move the S selector to 1.

Gear locking apparently actually works for 18+ now, and its a huge map rewrite, instead of just asking the ECU to do things, VFT made a big deal that it's a HUGE update for everyone and how the software works as a whole.

 

Huh, wonder if GL will eventually get sorted for the earlier trucks. Where are you getting this information BTW, the forum hasn't been working in who knows how long?

 

Matt posts regularly on facebook in the group, but it seems for more PRO tuners but really is just Matt posting updates 95% of the posts.

 

So...a person has to have facebook to get info now....that's seems to be kind of a kick in the dick to those of us who were early adopters. I was interested in what was proposed, but those things have yet to manifest as far as I've been able to determine. Bummer. I did update my software though...

 

Honestly not sure if that's even the channel for updates, its just the only place I can find where VFTuner is even talked about or posted about at all. seems something big has happened to him on forums and other groups. So you updated the software and flashed your truck with it? I'm waiting on a reply from their support as they mentioned I would need to update my trucks ECU then flash the tune again, so I'm just waiting on clarification as they later said I wouldn't have to update the trucks ecu, as I'm more used to HPTuners I don't really understand how the tune file gets updated with the software when flashing the truck, when the actual tune file from the tune pack I got from them hasn't changed. so idk many questions, hopefully to be answered soon.

 

I only upgraded my VFT software, my truck is an '11; there won't be any ECU updates for it. I've moved on over to HPT, it's just way more user friendly. Sadly, it doesn't have access to as many tables as VFT but has served me well enough. I'm only an egg and still learning.

 

What features were promised that haven't come to light?

I've got HPTuners and they support the 2021 tundra now, when you had VFTuner can you pull the tune off the truck using HPTuners? or did you have to flash your truck back to your original tune?

 

Gear Lock and Direct Shift in S-Mode. There was a workaround for GL using Tow/Haul, but DS never made it to some of the older trucks, as far as I know.

HPT doesn't actually read the tunes that are on the ECU, it merely provides the stock tune for the ECU version. Going from VFT to HPT or from HPT to VFT doesn't necessitate going back to an original/stock tune, either software will overwrite whatever tune is loaded to the ECU.

 

wow, yeah gear lock will be very nice if it works, if VFTuner can just make a better user experience and label what features are actually available / how things work correctly and it would be a lot more awesome I feel.

Wow, HPTuners must have changed, I'm more familiar with LS swaps and HPTuners and for those P59/P01 ecus it actually pulls the whole tune off the truck.

 

Better is subjective here, I've used HPTuners for years and maybe I'm just bias to being used to that interface, but I've got VFT now so and I'm impressed once I got it working, so might as well explore it.

 

Could be a Toyota thing that prevents HPT from reading what's actually on the ECU, I don't know.

 

Agreed, I feel HPT has a more intuitive interface and explanations for what's being worked with. VFT has full access to the transmission though, which would be nice. I have trouble making sense of it though, but maybe some day.

 

Shift hang? I guess that is the same thing I am experiencing. When I accelerate to enter a highway and then let off the gas the tranny stays in the lower gear for a very long time. I found that I can just punch it real quick and let off and it will shift. He told me it is because of my 5.29’s and the tire sizes was a weird combination. That drives me crazy

 

Allow me to clarify my post here.
I’ve tuned equally with VF and HP. My recent issues are more with my VF logger crashing. I’ve yet to submit a ticket (just updated to 1.7) but this has caused me to prefer the Hp scanner for the customers sake.

on a side note. I tune all supercharged Maggie Tacomas using 100% VFT so I agree with you on its features.

 

Ah that makes total sense. I see there could be a great future with VFT, but it's kinda cloudly now. I want to wish it's like building the pyramid type dealio where it sucks moving these huge ass rocks, but once they are all together it's an epic triangle.

 

A lot of folks have been hoping that for several years. But maybe it's being geared for those that are at a higher ability rather than a novice such as myself.

 

The last tune i received from Matt was spot on for shifting (over a year ago) and when time permits would like to delete anything to do with flex then fine tune for the 91 i have been getting lately.

He does tune packs now, but no more individual tuning as far as I know, reading his posts to others, same his base 87 oct with max torq downshift has been right on for me as well.

He actually sent me the updated tunes based on the dynos I did. But I have yet to try and load them on my truck. I’m just not confident in the new method.

 

Wadaboudit? I haven't used it in a while, is it different? Should work just fine. I'll be loading up one of my last VFT tunes here in the next few months or so for some testing (I thing I figured out why I was having fuel trim issues). I need to continue to put miles on the current one for verification yet though.

 

Well, I haven’t flashed with the new program at all. I got registered, but haven’t tried flashing it. I’ll have to find the directions and get the process down

 

Maybe if I just can’t seem to understand what I’m doing, you could walk me through it? It did seem like I understood last I looked at it though. I even bought myself an inexpensive windows laptop solely for tuning
