reading shit like this makes me more nervous trading in my 2016, my 2023 will be build in a few weeks.

that would totally suck, especially on a family vacation towing, etc. I mean what do you do if your towing your boat and that thing craps out far from home, kids in the truck, etc

    ugh..

I highly doubt it, the V35A has been used in the Lexus LS 500 since 2017, and in a couple other models since 2021, early oil pump failures would have been seen already.

I'm willing to bet that this failure was caused by an issue at the last service. perhaps the oil filter or drain plug weren't torqued correctly and caused a slow oil leak. Over 1000 miles, it would have leaked enough to cause bearing or lubrication issues, resulting in this failure.

Yep. Reliability is one reason many of us aren't hanging out on the Ford/GM/Ram forums. Take that away and we question our decisions.

Oil level was ok at the time of failure if you refer to OP’s post #22. I believe it was determined the lexus car application is not the exact same engine, although I can’t personally name the differences others have noted some in the forum. I believe it was also determined in other threads that the the lexus variants of engines get differently sourced parts compared to the Toyota models. The turbos for example were one of those components. Having been used a few years prior also does not automatically qualify an engine as being reliable long term.

there is another thread with pictures of a failed bearing.

Given the oil level was fine the lost oil pressure was likely a failed bearing.

You're correct, but the oil pump is standard across all variations of this engine, so its unlikely that the oil pump was the cause of failure like the user I replied to was suggesting. If there was a design issue with the oil pump, we would have seen them fail in the Lexus before they even got put into the Tundra for testing.

I work for Toyota and helped in part of the Tundra's design process. I also help investigate issues related to vehicles. 99% of the time when a user reports a failure or issue, they swear that they did nothing wrong, but after investigation we find out that the failure was related to something the user did with the vehicle or a service error. Its entirely possible that this case is the 1% of the time where its truly a manufacturing failure, but even those would have presented themselves in the early running of the engine, well before the 30k mileage mark. That leads me to believe something went wrong at the last oil change, slow oil leaks cause engine failures way more often than you think.

@HBV2017 can you DM me your vin info and where the truck currently is? I can try to get the case escalated internally to get you a faster resolution.

If that’s your job I’m sure there’s a few people here who would love to talk to you. Here’s another one that failed, he’s getting a buyback on his tundra at 44k miles, so Toyota must not be blaming him in this case. https://www.tundras.com/threads/still-love-my-tundra-even-though.119342/#post-3089805

Investigating the failures is maybe 5% of my job, and I only look at failures related to specific parts, which unfortunately isn't engine related, but I do still have access to those tickets so I can hunt for info on those.

Yes, don't do that. You sound cognizant of that issue...so shouldn't be a problem.

There is another super duper secret Tundra engineer on here as well that I get information from (don't anyone ask...I will never tell).

It probably is a little frustrating, but you can always filter through others.....hint hint...

If this is the case why did this new Tundra not warn of low oil level ? Start flashing and go into limp mod, shut down to prevent further damage.
Even the cars I drove in the late 70's - 80's had idiot oil lights to warn you to stop and check.
Cmon ....all the tech in this new truck ?
    Just saying.
At the OP thank you for posting this - really appreciate it.
It is more alarming to me to have it happen at the higher mileage,
Is it a ticking time bomb ? I doubt it but still.
Not a good feeling about the Toyota.

I can't comment on why this unit didn't give a warning, but I've had a similar issue in my own truck where the battery was low (had left the doors open to tint the windows) and I never got a low battery alert before the truck wouldn't start. It is something that our team is tracking and seeing if it affects other sensors.

I believe so. We got t-boned in our 22 Highlander and when they were going to tow it, they said AAA was on their way. The officer said to cancel that and he found someone local since it wasn't going to be on our insurance.

yep. every problem thats been reported on this forum is related to issues we're actively tracking, attempting to reproduce, and fix. There havent been any reported on the forum that we aren't already aware of.

The big issue is that people who have issues usually aren't reporting them to either their dealers or via the Toyota ticketing system, so on our end the wind noise looks like an issue that affects less than 1% of vehicles. The forum is a strange sample size though, I'm guessing it affects 20% of the users here, but that isn't representative of all users or trucks.

A lot of the complaints that users may post end up being anecdotal, with people chiming in who show the same issue, so it looks like there are way more users with the issue concentrated here compared to ALL buyers, the vast majority of which don't have an account on this forum.

how do you recommend people go about this then.

lets say my truck comes next month and I have wind noise at highway speeds or one of the known rattles or A-pillar click

what is the best way to handle that so it helps you guys identify and fix it?

Report to your dealer! We have an open case for wind noise in the Tundras and Sequioas that they should be able to add your VIN to.

I have a question about the wind noise that is being reported. It has to be subjective, right? I mean your going to have wind noise at highway speeds. I've seen plenty of people complaining on here, but to my understanding, when you go 70+mph, there is going to be noise.

I agree that it is subjective; however, compared to my 2020 Tundra and several other vehicles that we have, the wind noise intrusion in my 2022 Tundra is by far the most prominent. I’ve just learned to live with it (it’s not deafening or anything) but when I hop in one of my other vehicles, it is always apparent how quieter it is in the cabin at 75 mph. I guess the best way to describe it from my perspective is that it sounds like the door isn’t shut all the way, if that makes sense.

Ah ok. I could understand a whistling or something of that nature. Anything is better than my 11 Prius. We've made leaps and bounds in terms of noise from that. I haven't driven a 3g yet and possibly considering trading my '18, but haven't entirely convinced myself yet.
