Went to go change my oil this morning thinking I drank enough coffee. Go to change the oil on the 2012 tundra and I guess I wasn’t awake. Didn’t take the drain plug out first. Started wrenching on the filter housing with the filter adapter. One of the edges on the adapter punched a hole in the side of the housing. Got it off and then the light bulb lit up. Why didn’t I take the drain plug out first. That thing was on there tight. Got it replaced with a metal one. Hopefully that prevents my mishap next time. Just wanted to share the experience. Thanks you all. Everyone have a great day

won't have helped. Don't beat yourself up too bad. In my experience its only draining oil in the filter. Oil pan is opn to atmopshere. I don't believe its pressurized after you shut the truck off.

Thanks. I was hard on myself because I’m pretty sure it was me who tightened the housing last oil change and I didn’t think I had tightened it down that much. It was on pretty darn tight. Haha. Oh well . Live and learn.

Did you swap over the center tube? Some people didn't do that when they changed theirs.

I bought it and it’s new so why not. Yes I did switch the new one. Thanks for the reminder.

It's a plastic to aluminum connection. Hand tight plus a 1/4 turn still runs the risk of "holy crap this thing is almost impossible to break loose."

The swap out to an aluminum to aluminum connection is the answer. Including the old school (relatively speaking) Jowett aircraft aluminum. :)

I actually like the idea of the fumoto valve on the housing but i guess it wouldnt work with the oem one with the oil wrench

Doesn’t look like the oem adapter would work with the fumoto. But the fumoto would definitely be a lot cleaner process.

That oil filter wrench makes more sense than the one I got.

When I bought my Tundra the first thing my buddy warned me about was the filter housing and how he destroyed his the first time he removed it. The dealers apparently put them on way to tight. Not sure if the housing is a special size but it seems best to use the Toyota OEM removal tool. Others tools I had were close but do not fit exactly. I bought the oem one and the first time I changed it the housing was incredibly tight. I had to get my long breaker bar to get it to turn. Since then I just snug the thing up and give a bit more with the wrench but certainly not a 1/4 turn. I don't think that thing is backing out even if hand tight.

As to the drain plug in the bottom. I found using a hose on the device to open the valve ends up causing me more of a mess than just having the pan under it and shoving it up in the hole. I just use the plastic one that comes in the filter box.

The first time I change the oil in my Tundra it looked like a kid did it I had so much oil on the floor. After 3 time doing it, I finally have it down without too much spillage. I still think that other MFG have better systems where the paper oil filter is removed from the top under the hood. Personally I think the metal screw on kind are easier than these paper things. I know there is an adapter but its not worth the money to me.

Yep. I had to put the breaker bar on it to get off. I don’t think there’s a way to avoid it getting that tight besides not over tightening of course. And I changed the oil myself last time. And I know not to overtighten. But it sure was a bear to get off. My adapter I bought from the auto store was specifically for the tundra. It seemed to fit snug. But it might have been just enough to puncture that hole along with the pressure of taking it off.

Shit! Let me say I can relate...
PO of my 2010 never touched a wrench, took it JiffyBoob and those monkeys appear to have tightened it to 550Ft/lbs... I seriously thought I was going to break the neck off the oil pan section on my first oil change. It was an awful feeling for our first tango below!

I thought to myself, its an O'ring into a tapered housing, it only NEEDS to be TIGHT enough to NOT FALL off in the next 5000 miles! lol

As for using a quick drain plug on the filter housing, are they rated for peak pressure spikes of 120 PSI? Granted, most are a ball valves and can handle it but most are intended for the oil pans (low pressure) verses a live oil feed with varying pressures throughout the hour.

JM2C - that is not worth the risk unless the device is rated to 250 PSI surges....

    Edit for clarity

It happened to me too on the first oil change on my new to me truck and also my wife's 4runner. Both of them were overtightened by the same Toyota dealership we bought them from. I had a hell of a time getting both of them loose and ended up having to resort to an impact to get the tundra one off. And of course one of the tabs broke off in the process, leaving a big hole in it. I wasn't at all surprised it broke though, ya know since I had to use an impact on it. I was kind of in a panic since this happened on a Sunday and all of the parts stores around me said out of stock on the dorman replacements. I called one of them and they happened to have one in stock even though their inventory showed zero. That was a relief.

Didn't have to use an impact for the 4runner but it still broke in the process of removing it, even though I had all of the tabs lined up correctly on the filter wrench. the force I had to put on it was way more than the plastic was designed for. Already had a replacement in hand just in case.

I just snug it and easy to get off. No leaks either after several oil/filter changes later.

PS WIX filters come with a little plastic spicket to direct the drain straight down, it seems to work well.

And for any NAPA shoppers out there, NAPA rebrands WIX filters so they have them there too.

Looking back I realize my filter came with the little plastic drain tube too. I just had a total brain fart and skipped that step. Even though I knew.

I feel you, same thing happened to me when my first time trying to change oil on the truck by myself, it didn't come out till I borrowed an impact gun from a neighbor and heated it up.

I currently have the plastic housing... The last oil change the drain wouldn't loosen and so I had to remove the filter housing without draining it and it was a huge mess.

Find an oil filter housing cap that has a built in Fumoto valve. Its the bees knees and makes things easy.

I feel you, even with the plastic drain tool provided in the filter, I still make a mess sometimes.... The plastic thing wouldn't stay on and did not come off easily sometimes...
