My Dad in his 90s used to say that title of the book. He was still driving and bowling at 94, albeit with 11 Lb bowling balls .

I kinda agree, although I'm in my mid fifties and if anyone calls me old before I'm 70 i'll loft them one.

The reason I agree is that your analysis seems to perfectly fit what seems to happen in the Deep South, would people say it was a good reflection upon national trends? However I'm a Brit, the family put my last grandparent in the ground just before Covid hit, my parents and step parents are still around, both parents seem to have good prospects, despite mum having been slowed down a little since she fell down a railway embankment a couple of years ago while larking around with the grandkids and broke her neck, the step parents not so healthy but I don't suppose you can have everything! I remember 5 of my great grandparents and apparently there were a couple more still around after I was born.

Just strikes me that expecting your peers to live into their 80's is the norm in the UK while people are congratulating you if you bust through 65 in the US.

I'd bet $ it's the additives and crap. Seriously. Only place in the world I know where they prescribe you medications to attenuate side-effects given to you by other medications. LOL

People think America is the land of opportunity, but most of us have high stress lifestyles and jobs, and really don't take care of ourselves, so we burn out faster than expected.

I've never expected to reach 75, and honestly would be surprised if i get much past 65, and I'm not even 50 yet.

The stress of today is NOTHING compared to having to fight to survive, hunt to eat and find a water source for drinking. We are SOFT as fuck !!!

Plenty of your fellow state residents are probably quite stressed over at least one of those three - the softest of them seem to find relocating to SC the answer.

Prescribing pills in the first instance rather than promoting dietary and exercise regimes is a major failing.

The high blood pressure pills don't help matters, despite having had high BP since my teens the UK docs didn't prescribe meds, it was only when I went for the medical as part of the Green card process that lowering it was required - not sure why my BP is any of the US govt's business but it's their circus, their rules and if I wanted in...
Once they started pumping pills down my neck my BP went through the roof and about two years later my US doc declared they had achieved success - so now I'm stuck on betablockers and a few other delightful meds maintaining my BP at exactly what it was in the UK???

Just last week I wondered if I'd stumbled upon the source of my 30lb weight gain since moving here, disregarding the fact that the meds mess with weight. When I moved here I was surprised how sweet everything tasted, I still struggle to put big name white sliced bread down my neck, it tastes like eating sugar straight out of the bag. Anyhow, I'm now wondering if it's that sugar, or more specifically the type. Sugar over here is made from cane syrup whereas most of the sugar consumed in the UK comes from beets, my chemistry know how isn't great so it be something interesting to look into one day - when I can find the time to stop earning enough money to keep all the moneygrabbers in the healthcare industry happy.
Processed foods are an issue but I don't think they contain much if any more crap than in the UK. It says a lot for western food production that as a kid in the 70's a company i associated with chemicals and soap is now producing much of our 'food'...

Your view will change as you get older. 50 seems young to me now. I was running marathons back at 50, now I’m maxe out at a few miles.

@TheBrit I agree completely. Sugar and salt is way over used in everything. We had to change our diets to address some issues our oldest son was having in middle school. He was a sad miserable kid, and had just had a very bad reaction to an SSRI. We got him into a naturopath (not recognized medical practice by insurance) who diagnosed it as a gluten issue and a yeast issue that was blocking his serotonin production and uptake. We cut all bread and processed food from our diet, and got very strict on making sure our condiments had no corn syrup. He went on some naturopath supplements to stabilize his system. In 3 months of eating clean, he was totally transformed into a happy easy going kid.

When you eat clean unprocessed food for a few weeks, everything processed taste like salty sweet garbage.

We still eat cleaner than most Americans, but not as clean as we probably should.

I pissed off my college roommate when I didn’t bother to add the $1 option for dial-tone when we ordered phone service from MA-bell.

Took forever to call a number with pulse dialing. :D

I bet she knew how to work a mimeograph machine. That’s another item you don’t see today with all the photocopiers/printers. I still remember getting fresh hot exam papers with the blue ink in grade school from them.

    I can smell em.

Remember the reel to reel movies that they had to sync the audio to or it was like watching a Japanese godzilla movie?

I have a vague recollection of that. Nanook of the North comes to mind. Also, The Red Ballon. Not exactly the best movies that require sound synchronization.
