You could do like I did when I saw the 3rd gen coming down the pike and supercharge the V8. You can have a reliable 600hp/tq at the crank. It will spice up your opinion of your tundra. It’s way more fun than all of the garbage nanny planned obsolescence technology found on all of these new trucks IMO. I can back my own trailer and get by without 12 cameras and a 14” screen, thanks.

    Agree on all except it's a 3.8 L. I should know.......and it's very quiet.

I have a 2022 Sierra 1500 Duramax 3.0 that I am trading for a new Tundra. After 23,000 miles (so far) on this Sierra I have had multiple check engine lights, a long crank no start and several other QC issues. About the only thing I like on this truck is the fuel efficient engine.

Paging @knoxville36 has a wrecked company 1500 Denali. Think its a 2012 if I remember correctly with something like 417K miles on it when it was totaled. Ran great.

I’ve been following along on the pages for the 3.0. Its a cool engine that gets good mileage and sounds like it tows very well, but I would agree the reliability seems suspect. I don’t know that I’d buy any new half ton at the moment in regards to reliability being a big factor. I also follow the 6.6 gas 2500hd page and don’t really see much pop up there for complaints, and if there is complaints it’s never about the drivetrain. Any engine with DOD cylinder deactivation is asking for trouble IMO unless you buy the module thing that plugs into the OBD2 port and basically prevents it from switching from 8 cylinder operation (and then there goes the mpg). I think the 5.3 and 6.2 with DOD disabled would be just fine.

TBH not a big deal with me. This is the first truck I have ever owned that DID have bumper steps. I'm more sad about losing my Multiflex tailgate. That piece of engineering is worth its weight in Gold.

It seems like the current big 3 are hit and miss with build quality and reliability in their half ton trucks. I’d look at the titan if buying new. Solid engine and great warranty compared with GM and Ram and more gears & better gas mileage than your ‘17.

If I was replacing my truck with a non-Toyota, GM would be my first choice and Ford would be my second.

I have 43k miles on my 6.6 gas. My one real complaint is the oil usage while long distance towing. I’ve done a few trips that were 2k plus mile round trip, through some mountains with a trailer weighing less than 9k. Burns 2-3 quarts on the trip, doesn’t use any oil commuting. Started doing a dealer oil monitoring program but it only does it on my two big trips a year.

Yes, that was exactly right. It still runs perfectly fine other than the radiator pushed into the serpentine belts, haha! I bought it and will use 6.2 engine for a future project! Our company buys mostly 1500 Denalis for Project Managers, Superintendents, office execs to drive. we have a total of about 12 to 14 (can't remember off my head) ranging in years from 2012 to 2022. These are pretty high mileage trucks. They drive a good bit of miles all around. Anywhere from 30-60k per year. We have 2 2021 and 3 2022, then random years between then. Just since trucks were harder to come by last few years, we have been getting SLT with every single option of Denali is not available.

I have to be 100% honest..... Between the 12 or so trucks we probably have put 1.5 to 2 million miles on them combined. We have not replaced a single transmission or engine. We have not had any major issues at all. The older Denalis with the 6.2 would eat a motor mount from time to time. Also replaced a couple coil packs but very rare. The newer 5 trucks have the 5.3/10 speed in them. We have had zero issues and they have anywhere from 5-95k mikes on them.

I am also very good friends with an owner of a GMC dealer. Yes, there were lifter issues with a bad supply from a supplier and too soft material. Supposedly, GM switched and is getting those parts from Mahle and large majority being made in Morristown, TN for GM. Since then absolutely zero problems. The GM lifter problem is exaggerated much like Toyota and the cam tower leak frequency and severity.....

I also have to be 100% honest. We have a 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 with the 5.3/10 speed. The trans may very well fall out tomorrow.... But the next time I feel it shift will be the first. It is hands down the smoothest vehicle we have ever driven. We have 38k miles on it. We also get same or better mileage as a 3rd gen Tundra.......

That's odd. If this was a diesel (exhaust brakes use oil) or forced induction motor I wouldn't think twice about it. Did you ever put a catch can on your truck like @Lake.Life24 ?

I thought my memory served me "close"....

Agreed that some things get so embellished in the automotive world that people just run from a certain brand/model vehicle.

If you ever decide to go a different route let me know. I will hook the trailer and see you in a couple days and pay you what you got in it.

I also hate to admit this.....

4 years ago I would have said no way in hell to Ram. As much as I hate to admit it, I know about 5 people that have newer Rams and have had no issues. There is no question that they have gotten better and are pretty good. People make fun of Fiat/Stilantis or whoever the hell owns them now, but they are building a better quality truck today than they ever have. They do have their issues, like all trucks do these days.

Full disclosure, have had a 2020 Ram BigHorn as my company work truck for the last 3 years. I work in heavy civil construction management where my truck lives on vast construction sites / gravel pits / highways / etc. Carries over its payload WAY more than it should. I drive it like it’s a rental that I’m not paying for gas or maintenance, and it now has over 50K 100% trouble free miles on it.

The 2019+ 5th Gen Rams have been the trucks to beat since they were introduced.

Best driving, best riding, best interiors, best functionality, best sounding, and have the best transmission.

The hemi 5.7 is reliable (hemi tick and lifters are nowhere as bad as GM dropping lifters that waste camshaft and top half of motor), gets great MPG, and has a great mild hybrid that makes engine start/stop nearly imperceivable.

Compared to my 2018 Platinum personal truck, the Ram outperforms it in literally every metric. The Ram also gets routinely 4mpg better fuel economy (both on 33” tires), and will easily beat the Tundra in a drag race.

As we see when every manufacturer, new redesigns have quality issues that get worked out every subsequent year. The 5th gen Rams are indeed reliable, and anyone who hasn’t driven a 2019 is missing out.

After seeing how badly Toyota has dropped the ball with the 3G Tundra / Seauoia, and once Ram drops that new twin turbo I-6 Hurricane motor in the Ram, I’ll be making the switch and moving on from over 20 years of driving Tundras as my personal truck (01, 10, and current 18).

They are that good to drive.

Honestly, for the money that 1/2 tons go for, I'd get something like this. It's basic enough to be less expensive, but should readily handle anything you need, and it's less than what my Tacoma cost me. :anonymous:

I haven’t. It’s one of those things on my my to-do list that never got done. Realistically I’ll probably only keep the truck a few more years. Want to get a fifth wheel and upgrade to a diesel.

    Why not AT4s?
Just be aware that engine has cylinder deactivation, while Ford and GM's 2500s do not.

The 22 silverado I picked up in November is doing great.

21.7 mpg on the highway running 75.

Love the updated interior and the ride is very smooth.

The drivers seat is still intact as well, no issues there LOL.

Had one. you have to put the truck In gear with basically a ac knob on the dashboard If you back up with the door open to see where you’re going it will literally slam the truck in park and slide the tires while you’re pressing the gas. And the 6.4 is no different from the 5.7 hemi from what I can tell for power, and I’ve had both. The ride is rough as hell on the 6.4 HD trucks because the stiff HD suspension without the weight of the 6.7 Cummins. If you’re going to get a ram Go with the 6.7 HO With the Toyota transmission. That gets you more weight for a smooth ride and a column shifter so you don’t have to use the Doofy Gearshift knob on the dashboard that comes with the hemi motor And Chrysler transmission combo

This is where my research has led me as well. So many (probably justified) judge the Ram on their previous history but the latest GEN from what I find is the 1/2 ton to own in every metric including reliability.

Are you saying once the Hurricane engine drops you’ll be getting one? I know nothing about it. Time to do my research.

    Thanks for the input.

That’s a good find. The price is hard to beat.

How’s the Tacoma been for you? Are you satisfied with the power?

Yeah, for HD capability its a surprisingly low price.

Loving the Taco. I've yet to tow with it, but I also didn't expect it to run like a sports car. It feels plenty powerful enough to get out of it's own way, and this winter has been an excellent test for it. I can easily say that it is the best winter rig I've owned. Stock tires have even done well on everything but glassy ice. I'm surprised how much I enjoy it, actually. I feared the loss of the V8 would hurt more, but I haven't missed the Tundra yet.
