I liked it but the only reason I bought it is because the Toyota salesman was being an asshole and wouldn't give me a deal on a Tacoma. I drove over to the Nissan dealer and they gave me a great deal on the Xterra (I think it was the SE) in black and I had a cattle guard put on it. It was a lot of fun to drive.

Good question. I've been tempted before, but always opt not to get one because I have no indoor place to work on/store them. My general assumption is that if it has a motor and goes on the water, it's going to cost it's purchase price in maintenance every few years.

Are we talking about an actual jet ski (stand up) or a sit down wave runner type???

They are fun for about 10-15 minutes in my opinion. I get board after that.

I think this would be the case for anybody on them. Imagine a 4 wheeler or motorcycle that you can only take on one kind of terrain/one location. All water is the same. At least with a kayak you are actually engaged in the locomotion.

My dad owned a couple and they were a blast. I loved jumping off the waves when boats came by. Fun to race on water too.

Next episode of @LarryDangerfield gone wild: Trades truck for sea-do or gets current truck stuck backing sea-do’s into water.

Had one about 25 years ago.... A lot has changed w/the engines, etc. on them...

So, maintenance isn't bad as long as you do your own work (oil, winterizing, etc...), if you don't it will get pricey quick.

Crappy gas will gum up your motor like most other small engines. So, good fuel will save you $$$$

Very easy to load, unload and rinse down....

Easy to tow (even w/a Taco) :D

MODs galore for these things that will suck you in worse than modding a truck (Stage 1 is this; Stage 2 is that, etc, etc, etc...)

They are definitely fun to play around on, and they are quick as shit out of the box. Start modding one, and it quickly becomes almost 'too fast'!

Minimal mods on the one I had in choppy water and it felt like you were going to come off the seat (yes, I launched myself a few times).

When you are done for the day, you'll feel it (not as much as a stand up ski) but legs, shoulders, arms and ass will be tired. I'm sure the new tech is significantly better and reduces a lot of the vibration, but the water is still hard when you slam into it w/the ski... and you'll be doing that A LOT (because why else would you own one).

Mine left me stranded a few times, and I had to be towed in. Fortunately, folks are pretty cool about it, but it still sucks being stuck in the middle of the lake until someone comes by. (Minor issues are easily resolved once you know the basics of the motor and jet propulsion systems).

Safety... You've gotta be careful cuz your the little boat on the water, and if someone hits you w/their boat you're not going to win that one.

Are they fun? Hell yeah!!! Are they worth the investment?? Like any other rec vehicle, it's not an investment, and you'll be spending money on it. If it's play money, who cares. If you're dipping into a college fund or savings probably not ideal.

Resale sucks on 'em, so try to buy used if you do.

But, my best advice is to go rent one a few times first. See if the novelty and excitement wears off after 2 or 3 times you rent. If it does, then it's probably not worth it.

Thank you for the detailed response. It sounds like I better stay away from them because I already spend too much money on other things lol. Same reason I haven't driven a UTV yet cuz I'm sure I would love it.

With what you do for photography, etc... I'd do a SxS before a jet ski, and just rent one for a couple of hours whenever you get the itch.

Anything that goes in the water becomes an expensive hobby. Idk how my neighbors have a boat an RV.
The sound system alone in their boat is over $10k. Some will spend close to $100k on a damn sound / light system. When a motor needs repair? Going to be expensive. They’ll have to get it towed to the shop, pay for it to be lifted, looked at, fixed etc
In a cold weather state- don’t forget storage fees

Anywho- I would just rent one if I had an urge to take one out. Our here, not too many spots you can go to, so I’d have to rent pretty much on water. I would much rather invest in a solid Atv to mess around with. I’ll prob end up using it more to plow snow lol

Nissan is about a decade into their mid-life crisis and needs to figure it out before I'll give them any of my money.
