Tried to remote start my truck this morning using the Toyota app and received a message stating it failed to start. I've received this message previously but never realized why. I looked outside and noticed my mirrors weren't pulled in as they're supposed to be when the doors are locked. I locked the doors and tried the remote start again and it started right up. Learn something new every day.

Good info thanks. Im kinda highjacking your threat but does anyone know if our remote start run time can be changed with the Carista Bluetooth adapter?

@PERRY1060 , not sure about Tundras, but the other models have only a limited adjustment; this is enforced on fed level (Thanks, california).
One of the reasons I always had aftermarket remote starts

Curious, what was the aftermarket that you had? Were you happy with it?

    I was DELIGHTED with them.
i've had Compustar and Vipers in all my other cars. OEM remote start in toyotas always sucks - low range, engine shuts down when the door is open

is it an add on to existing alarm or type of deal where they have to use all their stuff and its a brand new alarm system?
I hated the truck turning off when door opened but I also understand why, out here tweaker zeeks steal running vehicles all the time, I think it is probably a safety feature to some degree to keep folks from stealing a vehicle.

the ones I used were replacing the whole thing (not that it helped a whole lot when it was broken in). The same manufacturers provide just the remote start option, though.
remote starts do not keep your car running if it is shifted into drive/gear, so I don't know what kind of safety rule imposed that stupidity

I had a Clifford (same as viper) for 14 years on my Tacoma and I loved it. Long remote range, 2-way communication, etc. Engine stays running unless you hit the brake before the ignition is turned on. But the installation was very intrusive, needing to splice a whole bunch of wires to include start, ignition, accessory, lock, ECU, and transponder circuits. I DIY'ed it and it came out great and was still working fine when I sold it 2 weeks ago. But I will not be repeating that in the Tundra. I believe that some like Compustar have more plug and play installations, but the key to these is to get a good installation or you could be in for a world of hurt.

what really?! so to be clear your referring to aftermarket when shifting into gear it shuts off? if that's the case why change.

I have had Viper before on my 90 Toyota truck and it was a great alarm, have a buddy who has the Compustar and loves it, so I suppose all things being equal it would come down to price and how the auto start feature really works. I don't mind Toyota's, but.... not a fan of another monthly fee, and at times its a bit quirky and if you have poor internet connection (like we do) it can be a PITA.

My aftermarket Clifford on my Tacoma did not shut off unless you hit the brake before the ignition was turned on. I am not sure how this would work on a push to start vehicle.

yeah agree with you. I would want stuff to be plug and play don't want to go down the road of having a bunch of splices and what not.

my prior rides were 4runners and G35s, the only remote start options available were the fob based remotes with a very low range, one way communication :)
Toyota's remote start kills the engine as soon as the door is open, aftermarket remotes allow to open door, put the key in, set it to ACC, and the remote start will keep the engine running. If the key is not in the ignition, and vehicle is shifted into D/Gear or brakes are applied, it kills the engine.
Toyota's monthly fee - the way it is now - is worth over the remote start. I would get mine at cost, and they still were around 300$

The real trick is just finding and gaining access to all the wires that you need to splice or tap. You need to find an accurate wire diagram that has locations. And it was a major job. Interior apart, seats out, etc. I am too old for that shit now. But in a previous vehicle I had one of these done by Best Buy and it was a disaster. Bad install and I had to rip it all out.

Oh you’re kidding, I think that’s everybody’s worst nightmare. That’s why I’m not sold on doing anything with it just keeping the stock alarm. It seems to work fine like I said it’s a little quirky sometimes with the auto start but overall it does the job and doesn’t seem too bad.

    Thanks for the info

Oh, sorry, Best Buy not Circuit City. Yeah, I came out of work one day to my parked truck and the brake lights were on. And the alarm and remote start were non-functional, but at least it started with the key. I had had the system for maybe a year and by then DEI had dropped Best Buy as an authorized dealer so their "lifetime guarantee" was worthless.

I used to work for Geeksquad 18 some years back.. I'll never forget what kind of people were usually working in the install bay :|
nowadays you don't need to know most of the wires, there are harnesses available.

Yeah, I have seen optional "t-harnesses" that I suppose can make this a bit easier. I'd like to see an actual installation in person to see how much they help. The other way is to just buy all the stuff, lay it out and see how it works. Dammit... I am NOT going down this rabbit hole again! Am I? ;-)

My best friend used to be my go to for all automotive electronics/tint guy for almost 20 years :) I saw him do the install on my last 4runner. it was a few wires splice, and everything else was programmed via USB. super simple install

Yeah, I'd have to see that to truly believe it. The systems in the old days without special adapter harnesses were almost frightening when you unpacked them. Modules, wires, connectors, relays everywhere. Cutting and soldering big gauge starting, ignition and ACC circuit wires, etc. Oof. I'd be curious to know exactly which wires would need to be spliced or tapped with one of these t-harness installs for our Tundras. If it really is only a few and if we can access them pretty easily, I might just be tempted to do it.

My buddy helped me redo my G35 audio.. I left for a few to pick up my (at the time) GF, came back to feet of wire all over the garage. I damned near had a panic attack.

today.. check out the iDatalink Maestro Interface Module and all that
