    Hi All,

New to this forum. Recently had my oil changed and they informed me they cracked the filter housing because it was overtighened, but it was replaced. However, it is still leaking with the new replacement. See photos and video. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be? I plan on calling the repair shop tomorrow when they open. Thank you.

Jonathan - welcome to the forum. How good are your mechanical skills? Are you comfortable doing an oil change. Start by spraying some carb cleaner around the filter area and wiping up the oil, then start the engine to see if you can see where it’s coming from. Your truck appears to have a metal filter housing which is not OEM. If the leak is from the housing, remove the housing to inspect it carefully for any cracks. Also look to be sure the o-ring is in the correct groove. You don’t need to drain the crankcase. You will lose about a quart of oil when you remove the filter housing. Replacement housings are available in OEM plastic or metal. The metal housings come with the shirt tube so you’ll have to swap that out if you get another metal housing. Post pics and we can give you more advice

I put my money on the oring. There is 2 grooves and it's easy to put it on the wrong one. That or they scraped the flat machined part when they cracked the old one.

Thank you for the information. I can pull it off and check it in the daylight. I really appreciate y’all’s help. Also, can you elaborate on “scraped the flat machined…” if possible? Thank you.

When you take off the housing there is a flat mating surface flat that seals against the lip of the housing. If they scraped it it would no longer be a flat sealing surface and maybe a drop here and there would make it out. Especially if the oring isn't set properly.

Thank you. Would this picture be what you are referring to? I noticed this while under the truck.

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! Once you get this figured out and corrected, start changing your own oil. The fact that you got under the truck pictures shows that you are qualified. Most of the kids changing oil for lube shops and even dealerships are the low man on the totem pole and many have no motivation to do things correctly, yet the oil change is the easiest way to affect the life of the engine.

    Welcome from NY.

Hopefully it's just the O-ring on the wrong groove.:fingerscrossed:

I sure hope so, not sure how much it would cost to replace that whole assembly. Hopefully I don’t need to go down that road.

@MadMaxCanon - I believe the seal is the big o-ring against the machined circumference where the canister screws in not any lip.

this is correct, but its possible if the o ring is slightly not seated or something or if they used the wrong groove, it would help produce a leak. if the o ring was properly working it would probably not matter though, to your point.

Before going hog wild on replacing the oring and the like; I'd get a can of brake clean and hose the area down. It could be residual from them replacing the cap and not wiping up the mess. Those that change their own oil know at times those housings can slobber a lot of oil.
