Well that was fun, timing is now correct. I think I dodged a bullet, on the valves. Leak down tests were successful.

The truck is alive and running now

    No check engine light :yay:

Thank you all for you assistance and patience!

The timing was off, PO had the work done, he said it ran after the job but I don’t know how. The other option was that it skipped timing . The first timing pics above show the timing was set to the camshaft tabs instead of the timing marks. The last timing pics show how it should have been

Could you tell if the tensioner was new? Maybe that didn't get replaced and let it slip?

Hard to say on that one, the metal does look a little tarnished. Different stamp on the part also. Other than that the parts are identical .

If it did skip timing I was perfect in skipping just the right amount of teeth to match the crank timing up with the cam tabs. :notsure:

Which tells me the previous owner is probably not giving you the full story, and probably sold the truck off cheap thinking they screwed something up. I bet they did the work themselves and didn't understand what was broke on it. Or let a cousin, uncle, or friendly neighborhood shadetree mechanic do the work.

Upside: It was timing after all. You got an awesome truck with the big engine worries handled.
Downside: Sucks you had to put all the worry and effort into it, but I'd say you came out ahead.
