Can't wait for my insurance rates to lower a little. Looked at the OP and thought "man, glad mine aren't that hight"... then saw it was 6 months.

Pay a little more? I've always found USAA to have the best rate as well as the legendary service.

I've been putting off shopping for a different provider, so you all had me looking throigh mu mu policy. We have home owner bundled as well. We pay $846.00/6 months for my wife's 2012 4runner and my Tundra. That's with $250k/$500k each person, each occurrence. It.also has $100k/$300k for underinsured/uninsured motorist. That's with all of the safe driving, reliable payer, homeowner bundle discounts.

I feel I can do better.

I'm with Farmers. Single, and only my 2014 Tundra on it. Full coverage including glass. 100 deductible.
    170 a month.

I'm gonna shop around. My agent doesn't do shit for me. Never tells me about discounts or suggests anything to lower my rate. Just says ... well, your rates go up because of fraud. Everyone pays. Costs me $68 to make a change to my policy.

I just upped my insurance. Looking at my coverage it was good when i got my insurance 20 years ago but now it would barley cover the cost of my truck.

I realize this is an old thread, maybe someone will bite.

Is it normal for insurance companies to request mileage every year? The fact that they are even asking makes me think I am overpaying.

Also, they are asking my vehicle purpose (4 options, pleasure, commute, and two others)??? It is my car, I use it in lieu of walking. I don't know how to answer this.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Could you in lieu of the higher rate insurance just do the umbrella policy? Just asking I was looking into upping our coverage and the auto insurance is substantially more expensive but the umbrella policy is not bad at all

Just changed both auto policies with State Farm, online. Effective today's date. Good advice and thank you.

My insurance doesn't ask me every year but I can change my annual estimated mileage which reflects in my premium.

I haven't really shopped around, but speaking with others, I think I am in the middle as far as what I do pay. Really what concerned me was the fact that they are asking my mileage because they certainly wouldn't do it for my benefit, in other words to lower my premiums which have skyrocketed despite my pretty good driving record.

I've always had a fair number of speeding tickets, I usually average one per year which I don't think is unreasonable for living in the most sparsely populated state in the US. Unfortunately, my insurance company disagrees and I am not even eligible for an umbrella policy, even a 1mil policy.

I'm afraid to respond to my insurance company on mileage because I am certain they will leverage my answer, one way or another, to raise my rates.

Yea they want to know how you are using your car so they can raise your rates. The mileage is to verify what you tell them.

I recently got asked this and I had my third car as a pleasure car bc it wasn’t being used after my dad passed, but now that I’m traveling for school it gets used a lot more. I can’t tell them it’s pleasure, bc that’s like 5k miles/year, anymore bc I put over 5k miles/couple months now. So had to change status to commuter and of course they increased rate by like $20/month

Our rate is not bad currently but it’s almost doubled by going up to the 300/500 premium and we have nothing on our records. The mileage part is not really an issues for us also. The 1 million dollar policy is only 200 a year so it didn’t seem right to double our premium if we can do the umbrella policy and just have that for issues that could arise

Just wondering if there is something I am missing if I do not up our premium and just have the umbrella policy.

Your insurance company is trying to get an accurate account of your driving. A person that drives 25000 miles per year has twice the risk than someone that does 12500 miles (if that's the national average now).

    I would just put commute.

We have Amica and have been happy. We have an umbrella, home, and auto (full coverage all vehicles). The '21 Tundra, '17 Outback, '06 Silverado and '97 Wrangler total $220/mo with $250k/$500k coverage. Before we added my 17yo, it was like $180ish for the same coverage.

...and yes, he basically won insurance lotto to get $500/yr insurance as a teenage boy. Told him not to F it up.

Depends on insurance company, but most require a certain level of coverage before one can get the umbrella. For instance USAA requires 500/300 minimum. We have 500/500.

I was under the impression that you had to have a certain level of coverage already in place to even be eligible for an umbrella policy, I may be wrong about that though. I'm going to shop around and see what other insurance companies are offering.

    EDIT: Basically everything ColoradoTJ said...

Yeah it is, and when you call they answer quickly and are pleasant to talk to, and if you have a question that requires a call back, they do that too without delay.

We had Nationwide before, and while I liked my agent, the cost was high for mediocre coverage. We had all our coverage with them including life with all the discounts, and they kept jacking our rates. We got more for less with Amica. Our 20y term life insurance is not through Amica. We moved that to Metlife for double the coverage ($500k each for $1100/y). We have a similar policy through Lincoln, but thats almost double the cost of Metlife for the same coverage but we got it later in life so rates were higher.

I may have to see if they are available in Colorado. I pay 289.00 per month on three vehicles. It will be lucky when my daughter starts driving if her insurance is 300.00 per month for just her, liability only.

Im sure costs are different by state, but I am in Connecticut, and everything is stupid expensive here. My son is on our policy (something my parents never would have done for me...and rightfully so). Amica put him on the Jeep which is the cheapest thing we own, and that's how he got that price. If he was on his own on the Jeep or the Silverado, I'm sure it would be close to $300/mo.

I'd find an insurance company that didn't ask about mileage
