    I am new to toyota, bought a 2004 tundra with a 4.7L , have read that the timing belt has a definite life span. How many miles is the life span, how often do you change it?

    I changed the timing belt on my 05 Tundra at 118,000 miles in 2014. I believe toyota recommends changing it at 90000 miles.

    I changed mine at 90 and 180k, in both instances the old belt looked very good, I wonder if it would have made it another 200k??? LOL

    I had mine changed at 117k. It probably didn't need to be changed but from what I read, I wanted it done before I purchased the truck.

    My truck has had two timing belt changes. First at 100K and then at 210K. The original owner told me that both times the belt looked new. I wonder what's the most miles someone's put on one. Has anyone ever heard of a timing belt breaking? If so, at what mileage? :cheers:

    Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
    I believe the interval is every 90,000 Miles. I recommend doing the following in conjunction with the timing belt:
    Water pump
    Cam seals
    Tensioner
    Idler Pulley (for the timing belt)

    They sell a great kit on Amazon, it uses all Toyota parts. I am not sure bout the 4.7L though. I bought the kit for the 5VZ-FE (3.4L).

    My dad's 2003 broke at 175,000 miles, one of the pulleys completely busted, it wasn't even the belt. He had just bought the truck about 6 months prior so not sure if the original owner ever changed it out or not.. assuming they didn't since it just broke lol. On my first gen I had, I didn't change it until it had 200k miles. I changed it right after his broke just for safe measure. Mine still looked fairly new when replaced

    I bought the kit for my 4.7,
    $185 Aisin TKT-021 Engine Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump - Compatible with Select Lexus GS400, GS430, GX470, LS400, LS430, LX470, SC400, SC430 Toyota 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tundra
    Aisin TKT-021. You might as well add a thermostat, thermostat gasket, serpentine belt and coolant to the list for the job.

    My mechanic installed it as said he was impressed with how complete the kit was for the money.

    No idea if mine had ever been changed but it looked good at 168k.

    I'm due for a timing belt change on my Sequoia. Actually overdue. I read something about possible valve relief in the Pistons so that if the belt does break it won't destroy everything it'll just shut off. Thoughts?

    I've never heard of this. If true it would be great. That would make it a 'non-interference' engine...? Which isn't the case afaik. :cool:

    We replaced it with no major issues. We did have a set back at first trying to get the timing back to where it was supposed to be as the pulley busting threw it all off. Once we got it all back together I don't think I had ever been so happy to hear a truck start in my entire life :rofl: With our setbacks it was a sunrise to well past sunset job. Luckily when we did it the second time around on my truck it took about 6 hours taking our time :thumbsup:
    I miss my first gen from time to time :(

    So when the pulley broke it didn't wipeout the valvetrain? The engine was fine afterwards? Interesting... I was under the assumption:tinfoilhat:(and alot of other ppl)that a pulley or T-belt break meant catastrophic failure. Either a rebuild or replacement was in order. Good news!:cheers:


    Edit: Maybe there is some validity to the rumor about 'piston valve relief' that 15whtrd mentioned earlier...

    We had a 2003 Sequoia got 11 years and 268,000 miles on the original timing belt! Driven by my wife ( slowpoke)
    We were extremely lucky! I do not recommend testing yours the same way...

    I have a 2002 and I love it as much as one can. I drive it to work every day. Changed timing belt at 80k. I'm at 160k and wondering if I should change it now myself.
    I don't plan on giving it up EVER.

    I have a 04DC Limited w-288,950hwy miles.I purchased from my Company. It used to be a Hotshot/Shop truck. And was covered under a Fleet care system. The office it was assigned to has closed an there are no service records available.
    My main concern is if the Timing belt has been changed or not. Id like to think it has. Is there a way i can visually tell? Thanks in advance.

    OilfieldTrash7 when I had mine changed at the dealership they put a small decal on top of the fan shroud that said timing belt changed at 105,000 miles.

    The kit my mechanic used had a similar thing, it's on the underside of the hood.

    If you register with the Toyota owners website you can see the service history from the dealers, may not give you any info but can't hurt.

    Thanks, talking to an owner yesterday. We came to the conclusion that they used the truck for a good year before I bought it. And I put 60k on it, so... If the intervals are 90k im probably over due any way.
    Now, I looked at the Ebay "Kits" and they vary from $80 to $300+ is there a recommended supplier/brand?

    Then add a new thermostat, gasket, serpentine belt, and 2 gallons of coolant. Then you'll be good for another 90k.

    ^This is a great kit at a great price. It's an Aisin brand kit which is a top quality OE part.

    Edit: Aisin was started by and is owned by Toyota. :thumbsup:
