GL OP, if you do end up getting rid of your truck, have you thought about what would you go with? That is a crazy failure to happen and I am not sure I would trust a dealer putting back my pickup after that.

 

I have a suspicion that most vehicles after 2018 are going to be problematic as emissions standards are way too strict now. I dont know if its that or the build quality going downhill due to covid but most of the people around me experiencing issues with their vehicles or equipment have the newest model year stuff. I may go for a tacoma or a chevy with the 5.3 that has cylinder deactivation

 

Although if they give me an extended warranty I may keep it and see how it goes. I'll have to have a chat with the toyota service manager about the oil though. I don't think a turbo charged engine should have 0w20 in it, like ever.

 

Why not 0-20 oil? That's what they specify in the manual and they won't budge on that...

 

The question is not so much the weight rating of the oil, but it’s viscosity index. I have been using synthetic oils in my vehicles since living in Fairbanks in the mid 70’s. After changing my oil in mid winter at -35F, the 10w30 came out of the can like honey. The next oil change I used Conoco DN600 10w30, the only synthetic I could find. It was essentially the same viscosity at -30F as at 300. Synthetics have a very high viscosity index, that’s why they a specified in most new vehicles because they can have a positive impact on fuel economy and have longer change intervals. The only trucks I never used synthetics in were my diesel trucks. The drain interval was such that it was just too expensive.

So I know personally of 3 other gen 3 tundras now that spun bearings. keep in mind I haven't been told at all what happened or what they are even guessing it could be. My personal experience has always been that spun bearings are usually heat related. Meaning my bearing overheated due to lack of oil delivery. Turbo charged applications produce a lot of heat. if you ever see guys slap a turbo on their engine They run thicker oil to account for the extra heat. take that into account and now also consider this is a pickup truck ment to pull a trailer or haul a skid on the back and actually work. it's going to get treated a bit harder than the same turbo 3.5 In an suv. The manufacturers oil standards are set for fuel economy and emissions. engine wear and longevity are really low on their list nowadays. this truck should be running 5w30 and have 7000km oil change intervals. Not 0w20 and 10000km. But ill just keep following their guidelines because that worked out so well for me the first time.

Boosted versions of Mustang go from recommended 5-30Wgt to 5-50wgt weight full synthetic. For sure, a lot of stress at those power levels and heat.

I did the same, and then at 5k too and every 5k since. It's the easiest and least expensive way to be sure you give your motor a great start and solid break in, no matter what "recommended intervals" are

 

I changed my break in oil at 1500 miles, I’m now at 2800 miles and so far so good, but I’m gonna drive it how I like and hope that it treats me well, I personally don’t see how a 0w20 oil is too blame, it does hold quite a bit of oil to account for the heat, but I’m not an engineer either

 

Any further details?

Reading about the engine seizing up, Toyota not knowing how much these Turbos consume oil, and the recommendations in this thread makes me slightly paranoid. I am planning to fly into a state and pick up my Tundra. It is about a 14 hour trip back to home, about ~1000 miles. Will the Tundra get too hot and burn through that oil more quickly if I try to make the trip in one shot without stopping (except for gas of of course).

 

Look at the crank: every big end and main bearing location has turned blue.

Crank is shot along with 66.67% of the connecting rods. Or it could be selective heat treatment: the rod caps aren't showing any color.

It matters not... I'm de-rating the 3rd gen to "do not buy" status.

 

I think it is heat treatment. Seen that color pattern many times in the counterweights. Good observation.

The 3rd gen is great and everyone should own one…. Potential new truck owners should definitely consider a new tundra over all 3.0 duramax and 6.6 gas HDs in the next 3-5 years….

I’m thinking about stopping at least an hour every 4 hours on the way from a 1000 mile trip. Would that be “babying” it enough during the break in period?

 

Yep yep, the car nut says not to drive it at same rates continously... Nor can you drive it too fast as it's not broken in yet.

IMO the 2021 are going to be worth big bucks going forward. Just like my raptor I sold to buy my Tundra; my Raptor was the last V-8 MY2014.

 

not really, as gas prices stay high and the trend is more technologically, the appeal of 13 city , 17 highway won’t help

 

Agree re gas prices - For some, time is more valuable than money. I'm happy to trade a few MPG for reliability.

My F150 was in the shop 5 times over 5 years for problems. It also had an electrical gremlin that was never solved (dead battery 2-3x a year).
My Ram 1500, 10 times in 2 years.
Tundra - 0 (knock on wood)

Really feel for this OP and the situation he's in. If God forbid my Tundra grenaded or was totaled, I have to decide between the 3rd gen Tundra, a used second gen, or a new domestic HD.

 

Does the tt v6 get much better?

I hope you were joking, but in case you weren't... no.

What I did with mine was take backroads that weren't busy, and constantly varied the throttle and speed. It's not very much fun. I did floor it a few times though after 500 miles, which was fun. It runs great, isn't noisy, gets great MPG (relatively) and doesn't use any oil, so I don't think I hurt it.
