Fuel Mileage After Larger Tires - 3rd Gen

I've got 35x12.5-17 BFG KO2 on Race Relation wheels. Been averaging a little below 15MPG and that is after accounting for the larger tire size in the calculations. Recently did some highway driving at 55MPH and got 17 MPG, which was good to see because any stop and go city driving I am around 12MPG. I drive super conservatively so I was hoping for slightly better results.

 

These numbers seem kinda sad... but I just took a look at Fuelly and 2022 Tundras are averaging ~16.9 vs ~13.9 for the 5.7 or 22% better... which is pretty huge.

I had a leveled 20 tundra on 34” and was getting 16 mpg by hand not trip computer in winter . My current 23 on stock tires is getting 16.5 and I drive very light footed . As soon as turbos were mentioned I didn’t expect good mpg though .

34.8" actually make the speedo more accurate than stock 32.6" tires, that explains how the truck reports good numbers when stock

Won't do better than 15mpg, but I have less than 2,000 miles and might be in a break-in tune?

By the way, never let this much snow accumulate on your vehicles. This storm concaved the roof of my work van

 

Digging that lowering kit. That should improve your mileage. I'm afraid the crude nature of how it was achieved has added quite a bit of weight and aerodynamic drag though, likely negating any improvements.

I've noticed similar with my 2014 F150. My in town mileage seems to be the same on 315/70R17 KO2's and the faster you go the more it diverges from the stock mileage. The width of a 315 or 12.5 is the killer. The thing is my 315/70R17's + the wheels was only like 1 lb heavier than the 275/60R20's I had on before so it kinda makes sense that the around town didnt change much. Im not spinning up much more mass.

I want my next set of tires to be a 285 or 295 or 11.5" but still say around a 35 diameter. I think that will help a lot. Toyo has a 35x11.5 and nitto has a few options in that size too.

I have been so disappointed in my millage with the 285/75/18 this winter that I went back to the factory tires, my MPG of course returned to avg 18-20mpg. I have decided to run smaller tires during the winter and put the Wildpeak AT3W back on in spring. Early fall I was averaging 17mpg with the AT3W once winter settled in was closer to 13mpg. I think since the OME tires weighing 38lbs vs the AT3W at 68 lbs has a lot do with it, the V6 has a hard time turning those in colder, snowy conditions, I'm sure its one of many factors.

 

Tread compounds of the ATs getting stiff at cold temperatures, most likely.

 

Off-topic, but did you black out your TRD OR wheels? Hard to tell from that pic

 

Yes, I painted them with Duplicolor Wheel paint in Satin Black. Good paint, I have used it for years, sticks well and looks decent.

 

I was a bit surprised how much mileage dropped after replacing the Oem donuts, was getting long term 17 mpg went up a size on ta ko 2 now and am now getting 15.5, is winter though so will see in summer.

 

In my experience, any Toyotas I put taller tires, it really drops mileage a lot. I feel that is probably due to increased throttle % pushing the ECU to dump fuel.

 

Bigger tire=more weight. More energy/fuel needed to turn them...

 

If you have time can you measure the amount of space left in the front wheel well or take a side pic without the snowhawk? I'm considering getting 285/75/18 (34.8 x11.5) Cooper Discoverers, but unsure of rub near or at full lock. I love the size and pattern of the tire, and the stance the truck has when installed. Did you do any trimming or pinning back of the mud flaps/ well material? Thanks.

 

Definitely no rub, there's nearly 1" with wheels turned, even with the Off Road flaps, this is because stock wheels and narrower 285s, as compared to low offset aftermarket wheels often with 12.5" tires

 

is it the 35x12.5x18? how does it perform on snow, rain? noise and ride?

 

do they make that in matte black? I was thinking I could hit the center caps of the stock platinum wheels when I get them

 

I’ve got factory limited wheels with 295/60r20 toyo at3’s and before I was getting anywhere from 16.5 to 17.5 around town and short interstate commute to work. With lift and tires I’m getting about 15 to 15.5 but well worth the look.

I have about 5k miles now on 35x12.5 KO2s on my '23 pro. Seems to have settled in to about 16 mpg consistently using manual calc and correcting for tire size. But, highway drags it down, especially driving at 75+ which is my usual speed.
