Hello, I made a post about a half a year ago about my 2016 Tundra TRD pro 4x4 that I had replaced the cabin from a salvaged 2x4 Tundra that I had bought.

The guy that did the replacement botched the job and didn't swap the 4x4 wiring into the new cab. The 4x4 switch and dash were swapped out but the 4x4 switch lights up and does nothing.

The transmission also shifts hard while downshifting and when driven and restarting the transmission will not drive or reverse untill the computer in unplugged and plugged back in.

Also the running/fog lights do not work and there are alot of errors on the dash. One of them being an air bag that needs to be replaced.

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best course of action, I'm not sure what to do. The reason that I even went through the trouble is that the truck was my father's and there was sentimental value and that may have been the beginning of the mistake.

You really really need a laptop and a copy of Toyota Techstream. You can source them online.

Techstream is vital when working the bugs out of systems like that because it allows you to see inside the ecu better than any other scan tool.

Most of your problems are wiring or connection and I promise you almost all of it can be fixed. It will just take some time.

The transmission code I am not sure about.

I just reread your first thread and I fear your first mechanic may have made a bigger mess for you.

What do you have in the way of parts from both trucks. Obviously the silver cab with its factory body wiring harness poorly mated to your TRD pro. Do you have the 4x4 body harness?

The other question is how bad do you want it fixed? How mechanical are you?

You just sending it to these mechanics is going to burn a huge hole in your pocket while they keep telling you bullshit about computer needing to be refreshed.

I feel for you man, this sucks. Bring it to me to Texas and I will fix it ….

The only thing that worries me a little is this transmission thing but if the ecu is getting fed bad data because of wiring that could explain it

The only thing I have from the original cab is the ECU, I was rushed into getting rid of the remnants of the old cab/salvaged Tundra frame. My mechanical abilities are unfortunately limited I can do simple things but anything advanced there is a chance I would just make the problem worse. To be honest I would like the truck to be fixed, but I'm afraid that I would be putting my time and energy into something that may not ever be resolved.

Is it pretty easy to get the techstream software installed? The usb adapter looks to be fairly reasonable.

I assume that means all the parts are gone for good? You don’t have the 4x4 ecu?

I don’t see how the 4x4 transmission can function properly without the 4x4 ecu and wiring.

The real problem is neither your nor I know what the first mechanic did and didn’t do.

Techstream is a crucial first step in starting to diagnose and getting an idea of what you are facing.

Like I said above it can be fixed it is just going to be very tedious. Someone is going to have to meticulously go through the new body wiring harness under the dash and make sure everything is where it is supposed to be.

Yes you need the mini VCI cable that is clear looking in color. Then the software installed on a laptop

Yes, the parts truck was at the mechanic's and he told me to get rid of it, I ended up selling it to one of the salvage vehicle websites.

The mechanic that ended up replacing the shift solenoid said that the wiring was good but I'm not sure if he knew what to look for.

I think you still have several bugs, all of which can be contributed to wiring issues.

I have extensively worked with Tundra electrical systems. As I mentioned it can be fixed.

Does the truck only have 50k miles on it like the photo shows? Is that the original instrument cluster.

So the cluster is I'm pretty sure is from the original truck due to it having the 4lo/4hi on it. but the original miles is around 103,000, not sure what the issue is there.

It’s the 2WD cluster then. Nobody would correct the Mileage down to 49k randomly. The Milage is stored in the cluster. The fact it isn’t still 103,000 means it has been changed.

Most mechanic shops don’t understand how to change milage even if they wanted.
