Question about transmission. My 21 seems to not be down shifting appropriately to me. Especially if you doing 45-50 and slow down to make a turn and accelerate pack to 30 mph. Is this common?

Can you describe it a little more for us? Mine tends to want to hold onto gears around that speed and takes more driving with the gas pedal to hold speed, rather than ride the brakes and coasting like my Highlander used to. I presume this is a brake-saving feature in particular in a hauling situation, rather like it myself.

How long have you had the truck? How long have you had the problem? What are you used to driving?

Seems very subjective. Is it just holding a gear? Has it always done this since you've owned it?

Mine seems to do this as well (down shift hard). It's strange, but I find it only happens when I ease back on the throttle to start accelerating back up to 50ish mph. When I'm slightly more aggressive the truck seems less confused and downshifts appropriately.

Bought the truck used with 20k miles. Sold a GM truck for this one. Only happens if I slow down quickly and then accelerate after a turn. Should be down shifting and it’s not. No load on bumper or bed. It now has 25k and has done it since I bought it.

There maybe an aftermarket tune installed on that truck. Have dealer check.

I know what you're talking about. It drives me crazy, my 08 and my 19 did something similar on the same turn on the same corner. I would slow down and make the turn the truck would down shift and I would accelerate easy on to the side road and it would almost sound like it was slipping and bang pretty hard back into third. So I started accelerating harder to see the difference in the shift and it was a much cleaner shift. But it's a quite street with kids around so now I put it into manual before the turn and shift it when I need.

Tundras have really wacky shift points from the factory imo. When I got tuned, one of the first things I appreciated the minute I hit the gas was the much improved shifting.

I've forgotten how long it's been since I drove my truck in "D." No "shifting issues" for at least 11 years!:D

I've isolated this down in my truck to the downshift from 5th to 4th. I first noticed that this was happening going down hills with my feet off the brakes and gas. I would tap the brake and instant the truck would downshift and make a pop sound. I now can recreate it on a flat road with no braking using the s mode shifting between 5 to 4th. But not every time. I think it depends on whether the speed of the truck has the torque converter locked.

I have a feeling we are all experiencing the same. Curious if anyone has done any real troubleshooting of this.

Mine will downshift like how you explain but no pop sound. My 14 tacoma v6 I used to have prior also did it.

I'm not sure if Pop is the best word. It's smooth but definitely an audible sound that's much louder now that the truck is around 105k miles. Sort of feels like something a software tsb could address.

Curious for others to chime in. My truck just has a smooth downshift. No sound, no jerk, nothing. Just downshift and holds the rpm’s up to slow the truck down. I personally like it so I don’t have to ride the brakes.

How many miles on your 2020? Mine is a 2017 with 105k at this point. It wasn't like this when it was younger.

71k. Mines worked the way I described since I drive it home with 6 miles on it.

I would estimate I started to pickup on this sound around 90k.

One thing I would say is that I wish I had done my gear oils and atf sooner. Not sure if that's a factor yet or not.
