Climate Control Fans / Airflow Weak?

Just picked mine up from the service department. They spent the afternoon on the phone with Toyota technical trying to come up with a solution. At this point they believe it might be an issue with one of the doors in the HVAC box. Either the blend door or another door called the mod door. They are ordering a new HVAC assembly. I fear that this won't actually be the fix since I feel like it's a wierd software issue and not hardware related. But I guess I'll be the guinea pig guys. Lol.

 

Having the exact same issue!!!!! Ever fixed it? Or anyone have the dealer fix it?

 

Add me to the list...Picked it up on 1-22-23. Noticed on my way home tonight at 25° it was taking long to warm up inside. Tried every FN thing I could think of to try to get SOME air to blow out of the vents. Couldn't get anything to work. Back seat was like a damn hurricane. Having regrets...They might get this Tundra back this weekend...

 

Just went out and checked...LO is like a tornado! You know LIKE IT SHOULD BE! Bump the temp up to 60 cuts the air flow in half. The warmer I set it, the slower/more restricted it gets. From about 70° up to HI it's practically nothing. Lemon Law! If you can't defrost the windshield it's unsafe to drive...

 

Down here in Louisiana, it was 35 degrees this morning. Had the defrost wide open. Speaking of which, the vents just below the windshield are basically just in the center of the dash and doesn't do a "quick" job of defrosting the windshield. Anyway, after the windshield was clear, I switched to regular vent. The fan speed was wide open and the vent next to driver window was extremely low. I doubt it could have blown a feather past me. That sucks. And in addition to all that, if I turn the temp down to low (with ac off) the air is very cold. The ac light is not on nor is "ac" displayed on the LCD screen. When I press the ac button (and light is on) and "ac" is displayed on the screen, there is no difference in the temp. I haven't checked to see if the compressor is on; and it has done this even when it was 80 degrees outside a few weeks ago. At least down here in Louisiana, if your ac isn't on, you WILL NOT have cold air coming from the vents......only warm humid air. I did notice this weekend while I was changing my oil, there was a "drip" near the front passenger door. There is a
small black rubber drain hose there and I presume it's for AC condensation? According to the LCD screen, if the ac has not been on, why would water be dripping from that hose?

 

I just called and talked to somebody at Toyota brand. She said because there's no TSB or recall they cannot make me a case number. She suggested that I go to the dealership with my problem. Then congratulated me on my new tundra... Thanks so much for your help…

 

Mine goes into dealership tomorrow for HVAC replacement. I don't really think it will fix the issue but we'll see.

 

I talked to someone from Toyota and it’s by design. And I actually don’t mind it. My cabin still gets really warm really fast and it doesn’t dry my eyes out by blowing through the vents.

 

Good luck man. I'd be very hesitant to let them do that, The likelihood of them getting the dash back together without causing squeaks and rattles is 0 to none. Clearly it has to do with the blend door or a sensor/motor not acting correctly and not allowing the vents to open and close/redirect all the way.

 

There is absolutely no way they designed it to blow harder in the back seat than in the front seat.

 

It’s obviously by design since a. They all do it, and b. The cool temp blows hard

 

I find it hard to believe they purposely designed it to change air flow based on what temperature it's set at...

LO=full/no restriction
60=cut in half
From 60 on up it gets less and less air flow.

If it is by design I'm gonna kick that guy right in the dick...

 

I would assume with enough backlash they can change the software controls. Wouldn’t be too hard to do

 

Is it thermodynamics based? Hot air rises, so it blows from the bottom to float up..and cold air sinks, so it blows from the top to settle low

 

That’s what was told to me.

 

Think that's "by design" or a an easy excuse for a problem???

I went to the dealership this weekend. Tested 3 different Tundras. They ALL worked/functioned the same. Guess we'll wait for an update or TSB.

 

What this sounds like is that they have designed this to work like a modulating HVAC system that ramps up power and airflow depending on temperature differentials between ambient and the thermostat setting. Now, whether they did it right or not may be questionable.

 

IDK. There's is a very significant difference in air flow between LO and 60°. No matter what the ambient temp is. The warmer the temp is set, the less the air flow.

 

Yup, if this is what they did it probably wasn't designed well. But hopefully it is fixable in software.

 

I'm glad its not reversed, summer could be very hot if it blew air on "LO" like it does on "HI" temp setting

 

I just find it odd that I can turn the fan speed all the way up and it will sound like a tornado inside the dash but there is virtually very little air coming from any of the vents especially the one next to driver side window. Before the new 2022 Tundra went into production, do you not think someone would have noticed this?

 

Yep, that's why I don't think it's right because I can hear it inside the dash. Also, it's coming out full force at the rear seats.

Just picked up my truck. At the advice of the regional Tech manager they opted not to replace the HVAC unit, which is what I expected. The regional manager did submit a ticket on it to whomever his boss is. The regional manager said they do have 12 other open cases for this same issue.

 

Thanks for getting back to us. Did you talk to the regional manager? Curious if he thought it was functioning differently then one would expect...

 

No, unfortunately I didn't get to speak to him. He did specifically come to the dealership just to look at my truck. He did say that the other 2 Tundras that he'd driven did the same thing so I'm sure they're trying to say it's by design.
