When I’m reversing in and out of a parking spot I get one pop sound coming from the front end. This only happens in reverse. Does this sound like a cv axle issue? It started right after I had my shocks/struts replaced.

Could be lots of things, I'd start having a good look around and see if everything looks to be proper.

Did you replace your upper or lower control arms when you had your struts replaced? Could be those.

Everything looks normal to me. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.
I did not replace the upper or lower control arms. I’ll take a look at them today.

Check out the motor and transmission mounts as well as u joints on the rear driveshaft, I suspect it may be a coincidence issue of sorts and nothing to do with the shocks. Maybe it was happening all along and you thought it was the shocks??

This would only be possible if you are in 4wd. Otherwise, all signs point to the new suspension bits.

Only noticeable in reverse. Ujoints are relatively new, less than a year. All mounts look normal. Going to go over the control arms closer this afternoon but everything else looks normal.

No, cv shafts are in rotation if the truck is rolling.

i had popping sounds from the front after getting a front alignment recently. Sounds were noticeable at slow speed loading/unloading of the front when braking/accelerating. Came to find out that one of the LCA alignment bolts hadn’t been torqued to spec.

Took it to my local shop after I couldn’t find anything myself and it turned out to be the cv axles after all. They said they had enough play in them to cause the issue, so they replaced. Sound fixed.

yep...had this with my 2012. Boot had torn and the grease had leaked out all over. Only heard the popping when pulling out of my parking spot at work.

Thanks for reporting back. Glad they got your issue fixed. My CV that went bad drivers front only made the horrible clicking noise when under load in 4wd. It was quiet when disengaged. They do spin all the time as we don’t have locking hubs. Hopefully your experience will help someone else when they run into the same thing!

It ended up being right at $1000 but I had a few other minor things done as well.

IME an unloaded CV has to be real bad shape to ever make a noise. If in a parking lot and wheels at full lock left/right they can make a continuous popping sound which shows wear and need for replacement.

Because they had to pull the suspension apart to get the axles out, I'm betting they tightened whatever was loose when assembling it. (loose shock mount?).

Why am I thinking this way? More often than not we are steering when backing up and this loads sway bars, shocks, control arms inducing force that leads to a pop when something is loose.

I'm saying this because it didn't do it before parts were replaced and started after parts were replaced which seems to point to the work done.

Whatever the case, im glad it's fixed.

Did you get a brand new preassembled CV axle or did you use the repair kit with new rubber boots and grease packs?

In my ignorant exuberance, I purchased a pair of what appeared to be beefy aftermarket CV axles from Advanced auto with lifetime warranty. I (sheepishly admits) got rid of my OEM CV axles. The aftermarket axle joints have held up very well, the boots however are crap. They split open after a few years and I have already swapped them under the lifetime warranty. They need to be replaced again, but I may just reboot them.

My passenger boot is busted and leaking and i ordered the repair kit from Toyota because i've heard toyota CVs are much better than aftermarket. But i have noticed the pop noise and I'm not sure if that means i need a brand new CV axle and not a repair kit.
