Advice on 20 inch tires

I am looking for a much better looking AT Tire for the 20 inch TRD off road rim. The wildpeak stock tire is anemic looking but I understand that it is extremely light with very little tread. Thus the MPG gain.

If you upsized to a 275/60 or just went with a more robust 265/60. What did you go to and how much of a negative impact have you had regarding MPG.

I suggest 285/65R20.

 

will 285/65/20's fit on stock truck (no level) with no rubbing? I pretty much had my mind set on 275/65/20's. Not sure what I'm gonna do regarding the lift/level. My dealer appears to be firm on Toyota's guidance of disabling the fog lights with the TRD lift.

 

There are a ton of threads out there covering tires on stock wheels =) I went with 35x11.5R20 Recon Grapplers on the factory TRD wheels (no level /lift, with mudflaps) and have zero rubbing issues even at full lock... have a level kit in the shop that I will probably never use.. lol

 

Remember bigger tires will lower your final drive ratio. Anything bigger than 33.5 and I would seriously consider a new rear gear. I had 34”s and went back to 33”s just because I didn’t want to change the rear end and I lost too much power and the hybrid motor didn’t engage correctly

 

How come specifically 33.5? source?

I’m kind of at a crossroads going back and forth with what I want to get. I’m not going to go very big though. I will probably just roll with a KO2 in a 275/60r20 to fight the added weight. They come in at 54 or 55 pounds per tire.

I had the snow rated versions of the Falken Wildpeak AT3WA on the Ecodiesel I just traded in today. They didn’t hold up in New Mexico. I put on some Toyo RT Trails. They did great out there, but I took a 3 mpg hit with them.

 

This is the first time I have read this and it actually have seen this. When I went to the 34" tire I noticed a big difference in the hybrid engagement. I was not sure what happened but now it makes sense

 

Lol tbh your reading into all the owners that post and try to convince non hybrid owners that the truck is SOOO much more useable then non hybrids.

Do the math, the extra weight of the hybrid offsets your hp/trq gains. You need to own the truck for like 20+ years before you break even on the fuel savings vs the upcharge for hybrids.

I have a hybrid Camry, in summer it gets 44 mpg easy, in fall and winter the hybrid rarely kicks on and I get like low 30s.

This happens to all hybrid and EV vehicles when it's cold, lol so in theory you only actually see the fuel savings only in warm months of the year

 

I used this ... my 33.5" is really admittedly a guess based on what I felt was a safe deviation from the stock gear ratio. ... I had a bad (undesirable) experience with 34"s dropping my gearing to 3.16 and after some thought and more research came to my personal decision to go back to a 33" which took me to 3.26 much closer to the factory 3.31 with the stock tires . My performance and hybrid engagement came back and I still mostly got the look I wanted. The only thing I can think of is the hybrid truck is tougher to upsize tires on because of the hybrid motor tuning is made to engage in certain gearing RPM conditions and the gearing change due to the tire increase upsets that tuning. I think most guys run non-hybrid and its less of an issue (although the ratio does drop and therefor you should feel more sluggish at lower RPMS). A quick google search and you'll see most professional lifting shops and lifting tire guides online recommend a taller gear ratio when significantly upsizing tires. some manufacturers sell off road/towing packages with taller gears already installed and it alleviates a lot of the problems I had.

as always... it's your truck do as you please. just sharing my experience as it may help others.

This post made me realize you were (all of you; my bad for not initially noticing the year of OP’s truck) speaking about the new 3rd gens. I should have come back in here earlier to acknowledge the “inconsistency” I referred to, was based on 2nd and 2.5 gens. Sorry, Bud.

 

so if I'm running a 34" tire on a hybrid, am I risking damaging my truck if I don't change the gear(s)? Sorry, I'm the furthest from a mechanic. I don't necessarily need to understand it all, but I want to know if I'm causing damage by running 34s on my hybrid?

 

. I just didn’t like the way mine drove with the loss of power at certain rpm’s. Not sure if you are necessarily doing long term damage.
