A little confused about oil filters

I went to the Toyota OEM parts gateway to get some filters and the site isn't up to date enough to accept my VIN. It also doesn't let you select 2023 Tundra as a model yet. So, I used the drop downs and picked 2022 Tundra and it listed the part # as 9091510010. I ordered those and picked them up today. When I got them home, I noticed the filter boxes are labeled 90915-YZZF1, not 9091510010. Are these the same parts? Are these the correct filters? They seem awful small to me.

The YZZF1 shows it fitting the Corolla, Rav 4, Highlander, etc. I would call the dealer to get the correct part number.

Seems like the part number that you are looking for (9091510010) is correct. I don't know if it crosses over to the YZZF1...they could have sent the wrong ones.

I just called the dealer and he said that the YZZF1 is the correct part and that the other number crosses to it. Strange. The new Tundras have only been around for 2 years so it seems strange that they would supersede the part number already. And since the YZZF1s had been around before there were 3rg gen Tundras why not just that number in the first place?? Mr. Toyoda's brain works in mysterious ways.

Gotcha. Now that I'm thinking about it, the oil filter in the 4.0 in the 4Runners is pretty small too.

My Tacoma 4.0 uses the YZZD3. It is small but bigger than the YZZF1s.

I could definitely be wrong, but I do not think that is the correct filter. The 90915-10010 is a pretty small filter, smaller than you'd think it should be for that engine. It's about 1/2 the size of the 90915-YZZD3 that my previous 4Runner used (2UZ-FE V8). I can't find anything that says that 90915-10010 cross references to 90915-YZZF1, nor can I find anything saying the 90915-YZZF1 fits the V35A-FTS.

For what it's worth, I ordered 5 of the 90915-10010 online and received part number 90915-10010. When I did my first oil change I checked the new filter side-by-side to the factory filter (which was also labeled 90915-10010) that came off and they were identical.

Could you please put a caliper on one of these and get the diameter and height? Or just use a tape to measure circumference and height?

OEM's change numbers almost quarterly it seams for a variety of reasons. They could have switched to a new supplier or the 9091510010 is only meant for new assemblies and the 90915-YZZF1 is the consumer version.

2022, 2023 Tundra is not on the list. None of those vehicles share the engine option with Tundra either.

If that was the correct filter, you would think the Lexus LS500 (same motor as tundra) would have been listed. I would call a different dealer (out of state even) just to triple check.

Amazon is good at a lot of stuff. Having accurate auto parts applications is not one of them. But who knows?

Definitely not the same filter, but close.

Kinda hard to measure an oil filter with calipers, so numbers are approximate:
    Length: 84mm
    Diameter of filter body: 65.4mm
Diameter to outside edges of o-ring: 61.5mm
Diameter of center hole in filter: 17.4mm

Box even shows only a single engine application: V35A

    filter.jpg

Edited to add center hole diamater.

It's not the same filter measurements-wise, but my guess is the measurements are close enough that it will work.

Well, the key measurements are essentially identical. The ZZF1 outer O-ring diameter I get is 61.2mm. The measurement I posted above was not to the edges. Outer filter body is 65.4.

See my last post. The key measurements are essentially identical. Some of any little differences are our imperfect measurements.

Exactly. Close enough. Looks to be the same except 5mm or so longer.

And the other thing... these YZZxx filters seem to be widely carried at WalMart. I get my YZZD3's there and I suspect they'll have the ZZF1s since they fit Corollas and such. Although I am not sure WalMart can beat the dealer. Through the parts gateway, when I selected my local dealer, these were only $6.78 apiece.

I paid $5.81 a piece through the parts gateway when I purchased them, that's a hard price for anyone to beat. That's why I bought 5 at a time. I also bought 5 of the YZZD3's on that same order and somehow only paid $3.82 a piece for them.

Just another data point, the center hole in the filter is ~17.4mm.

Oh, I just noticed one difference from the photos above... the 9091510010 box says made in Japan, whereas the YZZF1s are made in Thailand.

Someone tell me there’s something wrong with me if I buy the $4 Fram oil filters from Walmart… And the $21 super tech 5qt full synthetic

Not gonna hate on you for the super tech, but for like another $2 you could have the wix filter.

However, my brain will not let me buy anything other than mobil-1 so I have my own issues.

I would never use the el-cheapo $4.00 Frams. Maybe one of their better ones. But no, why even that when you can get OEM or WIX for ~$2 more. But it's your truck. I'm sure the SuperTech oil is OK. But like VegasK above I generally go for Mobil 1. I have a 3-jug pack on the way from WalMart which should be good for 2 changes.

I was looking at all of that too. If anyone gets conformation please post. Anyone know if you need to take guards off or anything special? The last oil change I did needed a filter wrench and an oil drain pan.

Depends on your trim. On many trims you have to raise the electronic air dam and then remove a small plastic access panel to get at the filter above while the oil drain plug is right there on the oil pan. On my SR5 OR trim I don't have that air dam but I have to remove the big accessory TRD skid plate to get at both the drain plug and the filter. In all cases the filter rests above a frame member so you need to run a hose from the nipple on the catch area... or just put some rags up there to collect the drips. The oil drain plug takes the standard Toyota fiber sandwich crush washer. I usually flip them over and reuse them at least once, but many folks change them every time. Otherwise, it's same as any oil change.

Thanks. I also see from previous posts here that its a complete screw on filter (as opposed to the cartridge replacement)?
