About the bottom side of the bumper..

Since that older picture (when the truck was still green) I ended up removing the crossmember (which holds the front of the skid plate) and cutting the frame rails at a 60 degree angle. I grabbed a 6”x 5/8” piece of strap and welded it right to the frame rails. I’d like to weld some d rings or cool tow hooks onto it to complete the look. I’ve got some fab work to do on the stock skid plate as far as shortening it and mounting it to the new piece of strap. I’ll definitely take pics and keep you guys updated. I’m by no means a professional and all of this work (including the paint and body) is being done without a garage, in the middle of the jungle, with a generator, under a tent haha.

    Nice!

Did you shoot the paint yourself, or have it done?

Shot myself under an ez corner tent in the jungle. Had to do a bunch of metal work as far as filling all the alignment holes and fender clip holes 1524CA1E-1CB0-4CBF-8A14-ACE674C347E1.jpg3C67909C-DDD2-47F3-8E79-1FC948DA694E.jpg

Alignment holes from the body moldings. I chopped the front fenders and rear fenders out a bit and as of right now there’s an extra leaf in the back and a 2” coil over spacer in the front.

I really like this idea with your stock bumper! Ive been thinking of ways to get mine up higher and all ive done so far is remove that lower plastic piece. I was thinking of ways to cut it but nothing seemed like it would look or work well. Then i stumble upon this idea of removing the top portion! I love it! Can you just give some more info on what was actually done to make this work. Like what and where did you cut, and what bolts were used and if new holes needed to be drilled? Thanks so much for any info you have, i want to start this project tomorrow!!!

I'll add my contribution to the cut bumper thread. I cut my 06 plastic fantastic. The issue is that there's no structure there after removing the metal behind the bumper. At least it looks good. I cut my fenders and flares at the same time.

    Thanks
I just used a marker and a cutting wheel on a 5" grinder. Nothing too crazy. I just scored the first pass and used that as a rut to cut the whole way through. I had fiberglass fenders before but I took them off to paint and bodywork them so I don't have before pictures besides when it was stock width with stock suspension. It looks cool but needs fiberglass back on there sometime soon.

How did you fab the bumper to bolt on? I removed my bottom valance but kept the top for now. I’m not much of a fabricator. I’m gonna grind the sides to stop some rubbing but I really like the look of yours

I just jumped on this bandwagon yesterday. So far very easy. Gotta fab some mounting brackets today.

I have a few. These bumpers are really thin. Your only protection is the large curved piece shown in the pic below. tool me about three hours to get this far but I'm old.

Made some progress. My goal was to not spend a bunch of money on this in case I went a different route later on. That being said I reused anything I could. I only bought paint. I will fab up something to replace the curved piece I removed. Probably a 3/16 piece of steel with a slight bend that will bolt up to the factory inserts on the frame. I made a template and then trimmed the factory bumper brackets.
The pic of the bracket shows how I used the existing holes for mounting. A little time to fab up but not to difficult.

My son and I are studying and working on this modification. Ours is a 2000 Tundra. The chrome bumper, which is actually more of a bumper skin, is attached to truck via two stamped vertically-oriented gussets (one each frame end) that are factory spot-welded on. I assume you guys are cutting these things off. How then are you re-attaching the bumper skin?

    Hey,
    Nice work guys.
@DA Tunbrah and @Lowell666dart… did you just remove the chrome part of the front bumper? And what I am looking at is underneath the chrome bumper. It has a black bumper ? Or is this a new bumper you purchased and put on?

I attached a picture of my front bumper. I would like black Bumpers but not for the price I’m finding them.
    Thanks

If you guys purchased this black front bumper…where did you buy it from?

I was going to wrap my front bumper but it’s banged up.

Not bad. I paid close to $400 for the bumper, new brackets, new crash bar and new fog lights.

Th crash bar I was referring to is the one behind the bumper that actually does the bumpers job. The bull bar on the front of the 2000 was ironically involved in a crash (deer strike) and destroyed. It was a Westin bull bar that I installed 16 years ago or so, not sure what the availability is today. LED light bar is an Amazon $39 special. Survived the crash and is still operable, but not installed.
