275/65/20 or 275/60/20 on 3rd Gen

also one thing to consider like the Lunar above is if you are a sport or not as well. The sport is .5" lower than the others. So if leveled with say a 1.75" RC kit it is still .5" lower than a non sport.

 

Here is your comparison of 275/60/20 vs 295/60/20. My buddy who did the westcott kit on his SR5 did 295/60/20 and wishes he had gone 35x11.50x20 instead now.

Like everyone else, i took a 3-4 MPG hit going to E rated, and larger tires.
...and I can only add one thing - don't go too wide on OEM rims as aside from any handling floatiness (if any), trucks with "ballooned tires" looks weird IMO.

Lift or leveling?

 

Did you guys replace the spare tire as well? What comes close to the 18” rim for the spare tire if your tires are 275/65R20? Also, if you didn’t replace them did you leave it there or took it down to remove some weight since it is unusable.

So no leveling kit and just offset? Truck looks great! If you mind me asking, how much was the offset and hit on mpg or turning radius?

you think this would fit without issues on trd pro 18 inch wheels? like rubbing or removing. i dont plan to lift or remove flaps. i want the falken wildpeak at3 295/70/r18. initially wanted the 35s but i think i will have issues with and mpg would hit low. what was your mpg so far? im still waiting for my trd pro to arrive to me from out of state dealership

 

Just put a set of 275/65R20 nitto recon grapplers on. p metric versions that in weight 47 lbs, Definitely fits in the wheel well no issues. I can feel the gearing change a little. Slightly more sluggish off the line with a taller tire. I was worried about the tire being a little squished in without a level kit, but I think they look ok. Just a brief drive home and highway noise was fine.

I've finally decided on continental terrain contact at in 275/60/20 not LT at 44 pounds. Will be 1 inch diameter larger and 1 inch wider than the OEM xt3wA junky tires. I'd go more aggressive but want to retain very good highway performance when towing. My penalty is mediocre only in mud.

 

are they not good in the snow ?

 

I thought they were till tire guy informed me so I didn’t pull the trigger on them until I did some research . I got mixed reviews from doing that . I’ve never owned them so I can’t give you first hand experience

 

so, maybe not an issue for the non- hybrid owners.... but I did not enjoy my commute this am. the larger tire sapped way too much of the power from the final drive by lowering the ratio too much. basically rendering the hybrid mode useless for cruising. to engage it you need to be at speeds too fast for city and too slow for highway was about the only way I could get the transmission into a power band was by switching from ECO to standard drive mode and it only helped a little but didn't entirely solve the problem. I think I'm going to go down one size to a 275/60/20 so its much closer to factory ratios. The only other solution would be to run in normal or sport modes full time to keep the truck in a useable power band but it completely kills the economy. If you're looking for a balance of looks, economy and midl offroad capability... even though my 34" was a P metric at 47lbs the overall diameter is a bridge too far for my rear end gear ratios. Since i'm not willing to change gear rations im going to return the tires and go down a size. Hopefully going to a 33" gives me the balance I want. Again this may just be a complaint since mine is a hybrid and most posting seem to be running standard powerplants. or maybe my expectations were wayyyy off

 

Very interesting @Llamafood. I didn't consider that impact on a hybrid with quite large tires. I think this is a rather extreme example of what is happening even with non hybrids only they "just" have poor mpg and the trans takes care of the rest as it has lots of gears to choose from. Maybe I'm too conservative, but I'm going direct to 275/60/20 on a 1794 TRD non hybrid. OEMs are 265/60/20 Wildpeak AT3WA. When I measure them they are more like a 255/60/20 would be. They basically are chosen by Toyota mostly for mpg. Even the tread depth is a mere 9/32 on a new tire. Pretty lame. So I'm hoping that the 275/60/20 will give a bit of a diameter and ride boost without torpedoing mpg.

 

After some more research the rear end is only 3.31 ratio … going from a 32.5” tire to a 34” dropped my ration to 3.16 … a 33” takes it to 3.25. I think anything over a 33” a new rear gear should be considered. Actually I’m kind of shocked the off road packages don’t come with a higher ratio… my old ram did and it made goi no larger a non issue without additional mods. Tomorrow am I’m swapping the 275/65r20’s for Pirelli at plus 275/60r20’s

I went with the Cooper AT3 4Ss in 33"s because of the weight savings vs the 34"s.

I was regretting my decision given I could have fitted 34"s without raising the front, but your post tells me that 33"s makes sense for how I plan to use the truck as my main towing vehicle.

 

I put the 33”s on at the tire shop this am. Night and day difference in drive-ability. The hybrid motor is working again in normal drive conditions and my mpg came back to 21 ish on highway. Albeit it doesn’t look as cool, this is a commuter truck, and I’m not willing to change my rear end.

 

This is great @Llamafood. I think you made a wise decision even though it probably cost you some $$ to make the switch.

 

Hi @topdec. I'm going with exactly the same size, only in Continental TerrainContact AT. I debated between those and the Cooper AT3 4S's. I admit the Coopers have very good reviews and are a touch more aggressive...in reality and looks. But....here's my heartache with them...a couple of buddies at work and I all decided to go with Cooper AT2 a few years ago circa 2010. It was a big mistake. We all had either balancing problems, early wear out, or very loud when worn, or all the above. Please understand that I'm not criticizing your decision as indeed I gave the Coopers a serious again look this time. My decision point came down to two things: 1) I had TerrainContacts on my previous vehicle (honda Ridgeline) and they were nothing short of excellent, even decent in the snow which many people complain about. 2- I can't get emotionally past the Cooper story in thinking that Cooper still needs some "punishing" by me not buying from them due to the multi-bad experiences with the AT2's. I know the later is not rationale, but it's just me.

I wish you nothing but the best with the Coopers, and I can fully support BUY AMERICAN!!

Also, if you look at tirerack, the continentals rate much lower than the coopers. I consider these ratings as well when picking out tires for any vehicle. Since you don't like Coopers, perhaps look at the Falkens if you get a lot of snow.

I know the Nokian Outpost AT are also a light tire for a 275-60-20, they have LT and the non-LT:
LT275/60r20 = 49.6lbs
275/60r20 = 33.4lbs

I got the LT275/60R20 Nokian Outpost AT for summer use, I'll report back come spring time how they perform!

 

I know what you're saying @topdec. Now I'm confused....the Continentals are rated top on Consumer Reports. The only real difference seems to be that Cooper wet braking is a touch lower, and the Cooper snow (probably mud also) traction is a touch higher.

I will do some towing for sure, so want the best I can get there. But we'll also go off road to lite off roading on gravel/dirt roads with the travel trailer, so some decent capability is important there too. Ugh...decisions decisions...

Which wheel is this? I have the OR 18s and am thinking that 33s on these 20s would be better for my 95% road use. And look better.
