Weird vibration as soon as I hit the interstate at 70

As soon as I hit the interstate at 70, I get this weird vibration. I feel it all over the truck, but goes away after a turnoff and only in the mornings.

I'm thinking either the tires have flat spots from sitting overnight or it's just the road, but never felt this before since I've lived here.

Any ideas?

 

you are correct. It is flat spot on the tires. What Size wheels do you run? Tundra is fat, it known for flat spotting. its more noticeable if you live closer to a highway, like myself, i make it 2 blocks and im running 70. But smooths right out once the tires warm up.

 

yep.....but last time was about a year ago....may be time to get them redone

 

yeah, i'm pretty close to the interstate. 5-8 mins and i'm rolling.

also, running LT 275/70's.

 

I've noticed this too, under almost exactly the same scenarios, and wondered if it was just flat spots. It goes away after a little while.

Dealer dropped mine from 40 to 33....idiots. Haven't had a chance to knock it back up to my preference

 

My truck was just in for service and they'd dropped mine to 35. Irritating that they can't just leave stuff alone. I'm usually 40 too.

 

what pissed me off the most was they never asked me if I wanted that. Just went ahead and did it......really?

Did you notice this after they dropped the PSI? I don't remember feeling this at 40.

 

yeah, I have been experiencing the same thing since I switched to the ridge grapplers. except, I get the slight vibration at 50-60 mph and its only in the steering wheel. once the tires are warmed up (maybe 10 minutes?), the vibration stops.

I am due for a tire rotation in about 1k miles. it will be interesting to see if I still get the vibration then.

 

Yea that sounds exactly right. I run LT 35x12.5r18, so Im goin to have a little regardless. i run about 40psi, and that does seem to help a lot. We tried several things at the dealer just when we first started seeing it, some people just refuse to believe it, and I understand their concern it is annoying especially on a brand new platinum. LT tires do help the best from what I've seen.

 

sounds about right to me. takes me 10 mins to warm up the tires. I'm now pretty positive it's just the low pressure with spotting.

 

I've had enough experience to know a big problem doesn't always mean a big solution. Sometimes it's as simple as an unbalanced tire or low PSI.

exactly why I make it a point never to freak out about things. See what you can do and go from there.

 

This is very true, flat spot with a bad tire balance is not a good combo, and I have seen that where some are far worse than others.

 

oh yeah....deadly combo especially on a Jeep. The death wobble alone scares the shit out of me.

 

you got that right! I've been dreading it every morning, gonna knock the PSI up and see if that doesn't take care of it!

 

That is no joke there, that death wobble is ridiculous. I had a used all out lifted Jeep one time and took out on a test drive and the wheel went ape shit, pretty sure i was going to die for a minute, needless to say I made sure it got sent to the auction.

 

you know what i'm talking about! every single time, you can almost swear your whole life flashes before your eyes!! slowing down, speeding up, NOTHING works....once it gets started it never stops!! LOL

 

That is the truth, I've seen videos of it, and was always like damn, then just one harmless test drive and I was like yup this it, im goin to die in a damn Jeep, instead of my Tundra, that would be the worst. I race cars and my butt has only puckered a couple times when I lost it on the track vs that death wobble.

 

You'd have to be inhuman if that crap don't tighten your sphincter!

 

No kidding. Maybe leave stuff the way the owner wants it. Dealerships piss me off in more ways than one. Mine couldn't figure out a squeaking skid plate for months, kept saying it was a front end noise, probably because I made the mistake of telling them exactly what it was... LOL.

Honestly, I don't remember. It's not very severe and is something that took a while to penetrate my consciousness. The first few times I noticed it, I wrote it off as imperfections in the road. I didn't have them long, but never noticed it with the factory Michelins, and they were run dealership soft? Definitely need to add air to the TOYOs and see if that's all it is.

 

Same here. I figured it was imperfections in the road when I first noticed it, but realized I had never noticed it before.

One variable that I could single out was the PSI. Gonna knock it up to 40 today and let you know how it works tomorrow am

Man, sometimes I wonder if I know more than some dealership service techs! And I don't know a whole helluva lot.

 

My old Nitto M/T Trail Grapplers were really bad about flat spots in the morning during winter. Haven't noticed it at all on my STT Pros.

 

Bought these for my last car to prevent flat spotting while in storage for months at a time. It had low profiles with only 3 in of sidewall. Use them on the tundra even though there is 8 1/2 in of sidewall. Low profile high performance tires are more susceptible to flat spotting but all tires will do it to a certain degree. Science. I doubt you'd want to use these every day since it rolls true once warmed up. If you do happen to be someone who parks their ride for a week or more I would recommend it. Also psi on aftermarket tires. I run my Nitto 35x12.5s at 48psi and don't have any issues. Also some say parking tires on a piece of carpet or cardboard will reduce the flat spotting.

 

Yea im seeing some tires making the difference. Mine is alot better when i went to LT tires, but now running 35s, vibrations dont bother me lol.

 

I'd look into those if I didn't use my truck as a DD.
Just knocked my PSI up to 40. Suckers were at 31!!

Hey Buds, did that extra air do the trick? I've only driven my Tundra a couple times since this conversation... (I have a work truck, work way too much and have no life. ) haven't had a chance to add air and the vibration is definitely notable after the extended time parked. Hoping the extra PSIs cured it for you, as we both run the same tires?

 

Get the slump busters out of the "bed"....

 

Speed up to 90 and it should go away. Then set your cruise control and ride on!
